Yes, I have a question: Where can you find the tutorial that helps you make straight-edged coastlines for ports and sea walls?

Images MUST be 800x600 or less. No Exceptions. Period. It helps on bandwidth. It helps those who do not have DSL nor cable modems. The math is simple: large images take longer to load than smaller images. The longer a reader must wait to read a journal as images load, the greater a chance you have in losing that reader.

Additionally, larger pictures cause a scroll issue. The effect of a picture can be lost if your reader is forced to scroll to see the entire picture. This large picture will also force your text to stretch out...meaning the reader must also scroll back and forth to read your journal. If you make the reader work, you stand to lose an audience.

If your pictures are larger than 800x600, a moderator WILL delete them, without warning. Consider THIS your warning.

Please convert your pictures to .jpgs, as well.  The in game .pngs do not work well with Internet Explorer and causes the threads to freeze.quote>

A reminder to everyone about the size limit for pictures...  if I am having a good day I may resize them once for free, but don't count on it..  20.gif

If you accidently post pictures that are too large ... don't panic!  Click edit on your post... then on the oversize picture right click, then click properties, then put 800 in the width box...  600 will then appear in the height box.  Then click OK.  Your picture will now be the right size.

Please also watch the line returns after posting multiple pictures...  pictures pasted horizontally across the page makes the page too wide.

After pasting your picture hit Ctrl + end... this will take the cursor to the bottom righthand corner of the picture. Then hit enter.  This will make a hard return to the next line... then you can paste your next picture.

Please remember that moasics must still be separate 800x600 pictures or smaller.

If you have any questions about this please ask them here.  We are here to help!

    Avoiding the ingame camera PNGs...

If you want to avoid having to convert the in game camera PNGs to Jpegs later (you can do it in Paint though) you can take pictures this way:

    Set game to turtle.

Minimise all your menus in the game.

Set the zoom you want 1-6.

Hit prt scr (next to the F12 button)

Hit windows button (between ctrl and alt key) and M

This will minimise the game to desktop.

    Open Paint. Start>Programs>Accessories

    Ctrl-V to paste your pic.

    Click file>save as

Make a new folder in my pictures if you wish (Right click>new>newfolder>give it a name

    Give the pic a name

Save as type>drop down menu>select Jpeg

Click Save - (saves directly into your folder to upload to imageshack or photobucket later)

    Minimise Paint

    Maximise SC4

    Take next shot...

    Windows+M...  and so on...

If you have existing PNGs that you want to convert just open them up in Paint, click save as> and choose Jpeg option in "Save as type."

That... That is SO Useful!  Thank-You SO MUCH!  I never knew you could do it that way!  I hate converting to Jpegs because you lose a ton of quality, which makes your image a little blurry.  I will find this quite useful.  Thanks again!

Quick question:  Do you HAVE to set your speed to turtle?  If yes, then why?

    Best,

Hmm.. what do you suggest?  Having to empty your plugin folder and have to play vanilla Maxis for a month?  Kind of like a custom content grounding... 6.gif

Oh and to add to my above suggestions for taking pictures...  please do remember to hit G and turn off the grid...  not that I ever made that mistake... (cough) 3.gif

Oh and one more thing...  I am a cheapskate and use Paint which does tend to reduce the quality of the picutres (especially text..) but I am pretty sure this method would still work with photoshop or any other photo editing program...  there are some links in the guidline for authors thread to free photoediting software.

I have had a Simtropolis Moderator edit my last few updates in my CJ, but I don't know what for. The pictures were 800x500, was the file size too big or something?

For those who have a Mac and don't know how to take pictures, here you go:

Set game to turtle (gets rid of the yellow pause bar)

minimize all menus (small box on bottom left of screen)

    Push command+shift+3.

And voila! Your pic is a file on your desktop now! 4.gif

Sorry Will.  The problem was the horizontal line... it was making the page wide.  I didn't leave a note because the problem was so minor...  zel will beat me later... he told me to always leave a note... 19.gif

    Edit:

"If you wish to offer constructive critisism or feedback to a problem, then a solution should always also be offered to rectify what you consider needs improvement."

A great example of this is from this post by crazyyaya...

A good start, but you need some improvement. To start you can download this, it will get rid of the yellow pause line when you take pictures. Also, when you take pictures, try to keep them at 800x600 pixels so you can show the most detail possible and close the menu on your screen. As for the city itself, try to download some custom content from the stex to give your city some variety in your city. Look at other city journals for inspiration. You might want to read the guide for posting a city journal at the top of the city journal section for more tips. Good luck with this cj, I hope you contnue it. quote>

It says something postitive... states what the problem is without being mean...  offers some  solutions...  and finishes with a postitive comment.

I award this post 3 rubber duckies.

Well you see it is like this...  I saw a post that I thought demonstrated excellent constructive feedback, so I formed a committee of one and awarded the inaugaral Rubber Ducky Award.

When are they awarded and how do you get them?  Who knows....  that is a mystery in itself...

...but lets just say that they don't just get handed out willy nilly, and you never know when the next one might happen.

    Oh... and it is fun.

I have a suggestion about our beloved CJ section here @ Simtropolis:

There have been more and more SCS journals posted in this section, which is fine by me. But, to help make the CJ section more organized, I think it would be useful to divide the CJ section in to two categories (similar to the Custom Content and Off-topic sections). One category would be for SC4 journals, and the other SCS. That way one looking to view SC4 journals can look at the SC4 section and one who wants SCS journals can look at the SCS section.

This was just an idea that came to me, and I don't know how easy it would be to implement this. Having viewed multiple CJ and MD (Mayor's diary) sections at many SC websites, ST seems very disorganized when it comes to sorting out its CJ's because everything is in one section. (Ex. Some sites sort them out based on the number of views/replies).

This is but one way that we can make the CJ section even better! What do you think? Should this be done? Should we do something else? Or is it fine the way it is?

    Best,

    -Haljackey

Yes we do indeed have only one CJ section, unlike elsewhere.  One of the reasons that all the CJs are together is that all CJs have the same chance of being on page one if someone is willing to reply.  The problem with creating separate sections depending on number of replies is that some people would never bother to look any further than the popular ones and the newer CJs would find it even harder to gain an audience.

If there is a significant number of SCS CJs started then a separate section could well be considered.

I agree.  There are pros and cons to each method.  Whatever works the best is what counts!

I think that's fair.  To me, it just seems very weird that a CJ from a totally different game is included in the same section as our beloved SC4.  Its like comparing apples to oranges.  Imaging having CJ's from Civilization, City Life, Cities Unlimited, Sim Town, SC, SC2000, SC3000, and so on in one section.

I think it would be best to divide them into separate categories.  But, as you said, as long as the number of these CJ's isn't overwhelming, adding another section isn't needed as much.  Thanks for the reply!

    Best,

    -Haljackey
