SC3k vs. SC4

Which game do you like more, SC 3000 or SC 4?

Many may say "SC4 for sure, who could think otherwise?", but I find SimCity 3000 partially better. For one I like that it's kept very simple and compact, but still gives a satisfying amount of possibilities.

And then, it's the comic-style. It gives me a very close "relation" to the advisors and petitioners, because every petition comes with a picture of them, unlike SC4.

Financial planning is quite as powerful as in SC4, but way easier and faster to do. The news ticker was also better, because it was easier on the eyes.

I also LOVE SC3K's music. This mix of new wave and jazz songs is just epic. SC4's soundtrack isn't half that good!

SC4 for me is mostly eye-candy. If I want to play a hard-planned, well thought-of and calm game, I play SC3k.

Discuss.

I don't think so. SC2k pwns SC3k. 3000 was the black sheep of the SimCity series (that is until Societies releases)

I think that SC4 improves in all ways except for simplicity.

I do like the petitioners from SC3K, but they got annoying after awhile and turned them off (or tried to ignore them, or something).

I generally like the buildings from SC3K better too, although the graphics in SC4 are better, and there are a lot of great BATs.

according to the experts on the fansites...

sc3k and sc4 and everything in-between is based on sc2000.. all the engines are the same.. and all the mechanics/physics/computing is the same...

I really liked SC3K and I thought that it was a great game but, after playing SC4, I don't think that I could ever go back b/c the graphics in SC4 are much better than those of SC3K IMO.

The difference between SC 2K, 3K, and 4 are the rendering engine and options available. 2K was the best there was... And 3K was a huge disappointment. It had less options, added farms, and attempted to be 'realistic' in the presentation. While it was very pretty... And I loved the automata, it was a huge waste of money.

2K sold more units after 3K was released than 3K did. It was released on more platforms, and in more versions.

4 has all the options, expandability, that 2K has, and more. It still ended up being unfinished, but here we are, years after its released, it still sells for top dollar. We still have expansions for it being made. It rocks.

Sure, I miss seeing the little girl riding her horse from the city to the farm and back, but really... If you want less options in SC4, it's possible to do that.

I like SC3000 only because it works on my crappy computer.3.gif But SC4 has way better graphics, better buildings and the BAT. I would play SC3000 before playing SC4 though. Both are great games. I like them both!

I always really liked the buildings in SC3000, I don't know why but I just did. Quite often I'll just put in my SC3000 disc just to have a look around some of my cities that I built before I got SC4. Sometimes I even like it more than SC4 because it's faster, easier and more variety of buildings but overall SC4 Rush Hour is the winner for sure just for the better graphics, more game options and cooler transport systems- along with all the custom content that I have for it.

BUT, if I had to choose between SC4 vanilla and SC3000 unlimited- I'd go for the SC3K... I resent all the time I spent playing the vanilla SC4!

Well, I would say that: SC3K was easier than SC4 in terms of making skyscraper filled citys, and the management was also much easier. But the lots were all mismatched. Houses wouldn't be correctly fitted to gardens and it was all very messy with the whole zoning thing. SC4 has better graphics, and capable of making much more realistic citys and even rural areas. And the terrain is very flexible, unlike SC3 and 2K, where you have to have one type of elevation per grid-square. In my eye, SC4 is better, just harder.

    Hard question for me...

All right, if you were to take away all mods and BAT's for both games, I think I'd choose SC3KU over SimCity 4 Deluxe as a better game, simply because I never stopped playing 3000 when it was out.  I've played all of the games in the series, but SC3KU is the one that I know the best, and the one that really made me fall in love with it.

As they are now, with all the mods and BAT's for both games, SC4 Deluxe wins hands down, no contest, no question.

yeah the music in SC3K was awesome but I'd have to say SC4 all the way - SC3K is just to outdated for me to play anymore - I loved the game back then but now I don't want to play it anymore.

Mmm. I'd have to say SC4. Though SC3k was cool and it was easy to make huge and impressive buildings, SC4 is more realistic and has better graphics. Also the region idea is awesome. You can make residential cities, industrial and residential, residential and commercial, pure industry and pure commercial. You can have the avenues and subways and there aren't any annoying petitioners. I really hated that old lady who showed up about getting rid of the youth ordinances. Also you have more micromanagement of taxes AND you don't have to keep lowering taxes in order to keep up demand. I remember having to lower residential and commercial taxes to 5% (thats really small) to keep the finanacial advisor from yelling and people fleeing town. Honestly, taxes get BIGGER when cities get bigger to pay for more arts and rising property values.

SC4 i prefer, but only because of my limited exposure to SC3k. I have only played it a few times, and the graphics are nothing compared to SC4.

SC3k was an outstanding game, still is.

I think the new comer to any Sim City game would struggle to understand SC4 due to the games complexity, whereas SC3k was (in comparison) much simpler, but in no way was it "easy".

I think it's a matter of preference really, if your all about statistics and micro-management then you'll revel in SC4's plethora of graphs, charts and figures. If you're after City building without quite so much headache then SC3k is for you.

I suppose SC4 is when the game got "Serious".

It's worth pointing out that SC2000 was the only one of the series which made Edge's top 100 games list, and not 3k or 4.

Not that that matters here, I just couldn't end without waffling a bit.

I hardly played SC3. I had some gorgeous SC2 cities that were all powered with hydroelectric. Imagine my surprise when I imported then in SC3, and found it didn't support hydro! It just sort of soured me on the game.

I currently own SimCity 3000 Unlimited, which I bought from the store when SimCity 4 was also being sold. The reason for this was to play the game series in chronological order.

To this day I have not went out and bought 4, not because I dislike the newer release, but because I am still trying to build a well balanced city.

When I master this I am sure to buy SimCity 4 when Spore (I think this is the newest city building game from the original team from Maxis) is also being sold.

    Better, overall, is SimCity 4.

I just downloaded the SC3KU soundtrack to my SC4 and now i have all the same music.  Easy.  You may want to think about that if its one of the main things you liked about SC3.

Well, I would have to say that SC4 is awesome compared to previous versions I have owned.

I started out with SimCity for SNES!!  LOL

Then the I got SC2K for Playstation, which I played to death

Then I got SimCity DS and it sucked!!!  The building are all the same height!!!

Question!!!   How do you turn off the advisor pop-ups for SC4??  Im sick of them constantly popping up!!

Wow. I'm surprised the majority of people of here didn't like SC3000. I loved it. I still do. In fact, call me crazy, but I often play it more than SC4. Don't get me wrong, I think both are great, but I just enjoyed some of the simplicity of SC3000. Not to mention I like working on one big city, or area. I can't stand the many different city regions they make you work with in SC4. I like the concept, but there are just too many tiles. At least give me one giant tile with a few smaller "suburban" area tiles on the outside.

Tricky choice. Like an early choice said, 3000 is easier, but it sucks if you don't increase the land value cause it looks crud. SC4 has better graphics, but it's much harder to get skyscrapers. SC4 is my favorite, because in the end, the satisfaction of building a great city comes through.

It's interesting how everyone thinks. While I have never played any other Simcity games, I'd guess that I'd like Simcity 4 over the others, because of the complexity. I welcome it, and I think that it adds more replayability to the game. I guess if I were younger, i may have played Simciry 3000, but alas, I never did.
