I know this guy is a comic, but I actually think he might be serious.  This is Mr. None of the Above whom I have always believed will be elected.  Might make things interesting as he intends to be on the ticket of both parties.

If it is a hoax, he has taken in a pretty respected news organization, albeit the report was kind of tongue in cheek.

After all, don't forget Bonzo's daddy was pretty good in the Oval Office, and the Terminator is running California.

To be honest, I wouldn't mind too much.  He's a really smart guy.  I don't know if he has the skills to manipulate the political system the right way to get things done, or if he has the guts to be a politician, but he can see the absurdities in the government and would hopefully be a good influence.

I like the guy, but let's be serious... Colbert, a comedian, in the White house? All we need is the earth to reverse it's axis and Hell to freeze over, but then we might as well elect Bill O'Reilly or Ann Coulter.

Maybe I'm being to harsh on him. 3.gif Even though I like Jon Stewart more, ya gotta love Colbert.

Wouldn't surprise me a bit if he won.  In fact, he probably has a contingency plan in place to assure a loss regardless of the votes.  I know I would.  Sonny Bono, The Govornator, Jesse Ventura (sigh), all seemed like silly, absurd "protest vote" choices.  And they won.  Why not a comedian to go along with the pop singer, action hero actor and bogus wrestler?

I believe his is only running in one state (South Carolina, I think).

I've been a Colbert fan since Exit 57, and thought he and Steve Correl were one of the funniest pairs on television when they were on The Daily Show.

That doesn't mean I would vote for him though - he is obviously quite an intelligent guy, but not a lot of what he says is to be taken totally seriously.

(NOTE: I do believe his is going to be running in that one state - I just think he is doing it as a lark).

EDIT: On a side note, am I the only one who finds the respect for The Daily Show and The Colbert Report amusing?

The guest list on The Daily Show recently has been remarkable: Obama, Bill Clinton, McCann, Gore, Mexican President Fox, Wesley Clarke, Lynn Cheney - that really is quite a lineup for what started out as a very simple SNL-like fake news comedy program.

Not at all, I show a lot of respect for both television programs. They are so funny! They make political jokes which you can't help but laugh at, and it also brings a sense of relief to its watchers I think. It's great that such higher ups on the political ladder are guests on these shows too. Again I think both of these shows offer a relief to the nation as we can just laugh about some of the things we see everyday rather than worry.

I think it's pretty cool that Steve Colbert is running for president. Although I probably wouldn't vote for him, he is a highly intelligent guy and I think he shows some potential in running the country.

Also just as a note, I'm altering the title of this thread so that people are not offended or take it the wrong way. 2.gif

I don't appreciate political stunts like this... It is things like this that make the election process such a three-ringed circus anymore, and subsequently causes a reduction in voting. Don't get me wrong, I love the Colbert Report, but I think this comes in bad taste from Mr. Colbert. The only thing that he will accomplish (since he's running in one state) is to take away votes that previously would have been honest opinions on who should have been president. This could, theoretically, cost someone the election.

^^ Sounds like fun to me! 9.gif

I remember a guy named Pat Paulsen from The Smother Brothers Comedy Hour who perpetually ran for president in the '60's & '70's. Chaos or not it would be cool to see the potential impact a legitimate 3.gif satirist would have. But I'm still waiting for someone to run as a member of the Party Party! 9.gif

Meh, I've always liked Jon Stewart better. But, I wish him good luck. After this, maybe Billy Ray Cyrus will run for governor of Tennessee or something. Yet again, this shows how the mass media has infiltrated politics.

I haven't seen his show very much (I have managed to catch it on holiday in north america before), but for whatever reason I find there is something quite unsavoury about him.

This would be one the best mockery's to the U.S.'s system. Imagine a satire TV character in the Oval Office, I'd vote for him just to see a TV character be a better and more respected president then Bush. In all reality, Jon Stewart would make one of the best president in Modern US history. Hee an extremely smart and witty man and I would like to see him win as a real candidate.

How is showing your dissatisfaction with the current group of candidates by voting for Colbert not an honest opinion?

Because, whether you accept it or not, there is, and always will be, two parties.  It is simply too hard to form a political party today, as you must gain the attention of several million people in order to accomplish anything.  Its not like earlier times (I'm talking revolutionary war times, not the 50s), where you only had to influence a small handful of people to back you in order to gain office (say 100,000 people).  But since the solidification of the Democratic and Republican parties, it has been a near impossibility to initiate a new party.  It requires too much money and manpower.

So, why would you vote for someone whom you know will lose the election, and, therefore, be throwing your vote away.  I would rather make my opinion count and vote for one who has a good chance of winning (the dem or rep candidate), not a comedian.

First, political scientists have already said that unless you live in a battleground state, the current election methodology makes the majority of voter's voices pretty much meaningless. Second, voicing your dissatisfaction with the current system by using your vote to mock the whole system is a widely accepted way of voicing one's opinions.

Hell yeah....now If I only made this a thread after we got done celebrating(I had a good beer)

Anyway I will vote for Mr.Colbert because he is more truthful then half of these clowns....

plus I'd rather have a fake newsman in the office then a son of Bush or a relation of Clinton...

This guy is realistic aswell....he knows how to appeal to the people and I wouldn't be surprised if he finds the 3,000 South Carolians to sign that Democratic waiver so he doesn't have to pay 2,500 dollars...

but Republican side looks tough...he needs like 10,000 grand...

All in all I think even if he is joking or doesn't have the money...

He'll still get more votes then Nader.....

Well, I am sorry if I touched a couple of nerves with my title, but since Colbert is a satirist, I rather thought it might be appropriate.

I too will correct the title to clear up any confusions for our international friends.

Interesting typo there Patriots. Not only is he running for President, he's also trying to destroy the infidel! Maybe one would edit that so as to eliminate any confusion. I say Jon Stewart '08! He actually tries to have serious conversations and really cares about what he's talking about. He just happens to do it in a way that millions of viewers love. 3.gif

If Colbert becomes President, expect a nationwide bear hunt after his inauguration.

Colbert for President? Hey, Al Franken is legitimately running for the U.S. Senate in Minnesota, why not?

Actors have actually been interesting political figures to follow. Reagon anyone? Though, he wasn't a comedian.

By no means, not to mention the onion! But as much as I enjoy all of the three extremely fine news sources, they all make me think: Is this really the most powerful way our nation has discovered to express left wing views?
