Aurora is beautifully done!!

I'll be also very curios to see how you will solve the problem of giant mirror facade...

BTW the frame casting shadow onto window planes that so much excites SimHotToDDy is unfortunately wrong in more than one way. First of all the frames of Aurora are flash with the surface of the glass. Second there is no way to cast shadow on such a mirror like surface anyway...

As Base is concerned, I think it should be a bit taller with massive Corinthian columns... Also the first recess after the curved front is clad in mat pink granite and not in glass.

Roof lattice is a different than real thing, but that doesn't really matter a bit! All-in-all it is a brilliant model!

O'rly? I'd like to think that I'm always improving. Just on geometry alone, I'd say that this is my best effort yet.

Ah... I knew someone would point that out. I'm fairly sure those shadows will disappear once I create a decent glass texture for the facade. But on that subject...

I'm experimenting with Arch and Design glass materials for the first time on the facade, but so far, the results are mostly black!

Can anyone suggest some settings to change the glass template into something that would look decent on this tower? I'm a little lost.

well making glass curtain wall like that is a major challenge... I've personally run into it like into wall of solid concrete 2m thick...

The problem is that if you do things wright they will NOT look right. What I mean people expect to see "golden" tower... but it is golden only when it reflects the sky, be it clear or overcast... once it reflects the ground it will be what ever the ground is with a cast of gold in this case, since the glass has a metal film on it. Again the matter of whether this film on outer or inner surface will make difference...

In Shanghai I was passing building many times but never really took a close look at it since I was apprehensive of this mirror thing and didn't plan it for the my BAT. So I can't really say about the side of the glass surface the film is on. So I think in the end of the game,e artistic compromise between realism and appearances would have to be made. May be even hand made (rather then generated) bitmap has to be used for teh defuse slot with some self-illumination as to fake reflectivity.

    Trying to texture the beast:

    Good/bad/fail?

I'm not going for the most realistic possible look, but the look that will work the best in game. I'm trying to preserve the gold as much as I can while still reflecting the ground.

The Gold colour is great, almost perfect. One thing is the green strips on the top, maybe need to be a little darker??? But don't ask me, i don't know that much. BTW good luck with the nightlights, are you going to do the screen/tv, or is that near impossible?

You are really the uncrowned king of ridiculously complicated roof junk.

We, stardust, are the oddest observers of self (a.k.a. the universe).

I'm just a group of atoms typing this.

    What do I know?

Curved part is relatively easy.. as the reflection is broken down naturally... it is flat parts that are problematic... Like the back side of the building, especially side facing...

As far as color goes it is pretty good, may be just a tad darker would be better.

    Also here be granite (pink):

it could be clearly seen for instance here:

and again - it turning out marvelously!!!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Glass texture is perfect in the front ! Maybe some little elements on the sides to correct (depends on the reflexion of the light, I never seen this building in real life)

Thanks for all your nice feedback everyone. SF, done. Thanks for pointing that out, I thought it didn't look quite right. T-Wrecks, haha, well this building actually has junk like this in its roof. 3.gif

The hard part is now done I think. All that's left to be done is the base and the texturing of anything that is left in grey at the moment.

Ahh, the screen... I don't really like it and wasn't planning to include it in the night lighting, but then again people expect it to be there and it'd be simple to make - just map a self-illuminating texture onto heaps of little dots scattered around the top half of the facade.

What do you guys think, screen or no screen? And if so, can somebody find me a picture for it? Seriously, your picture might make it onto the final BAT. Just make it something colourful and Chinese preferably.

    Edit: roof done:

Excellent work with the textures and the roof, it's nicely done !

As for the screen, why not making two versions ? One with and one without !
