Hmmm, I was going to keep the last week’s project a secret but I guess if I'm getting comments like then this...

AIG tower, the mostly glass and steel 280 something Meter high (40 Floor) tower that is located right in the heart of Hong Kong's financial district. It’s probably best known for being that tower that has the rainbow lights running down the side in the nightly laser show. Here's what I've done so far: I know it's not perfect and I still have to do the base but it's a start:

    Here's the model so far...

The shape is PERFECT. But are you doing the facade with a texture and not actually modeling it? If so, you shouldn't do that. It may look good in the outter zooms, but up close it will look really bad. However, excellent model!

Yeh, the shape looks very nice, the concrete/tile box part of the building on the lower half extrudes too far from the rest of the building. Textures tho need the most work. Your modelling is getting better, but like myself in my 1st few bats, I had a bad texture library. I would find a bunch of free sites of texture downloads for you but the internet at this cafe is sloooowww.

HONG KONG: Thanks so much man! You're a life saver. Also, what do you think I should change?

DA, I'm not really convinced that if I actually modeled all the little window frames and details on the tower body that it would actually look all that different. I know it's just a wrap around texture, but because the real tower is almost flat glass anyway, I think that if I can make a good texture, I can make it look close to the real thing with just a texture.

And Bixel, on the subject of textures... HELP! Where do you get your textures for real life buildings from? I just made this in Paint Shop Pro from scratch (I mean a white background....) but I'm afraid this is about as good as I can do. Is there a website somewhere that offers textures for glass windows ect, (something I can modify a little to look like the glass on the AIG tower?) Thanks.

And thanks to the rest of you for your nice and helpful comments.

After hunting around for a window texture that matched the AIG tower and being un-successful, I decided to make a new one (from scratch). I tried to re-create the texture shown in the first picture of my last post (The sort of dull green-blue one) but hyped up with reflections like shown in some of the street level pictures given to me by HONG KONG.

I NEED your honest opinion, is this better or worse than my first texture or do they both suck and I should try again. IMHO, I think this one will look suitable once the model and base are complete. Here are my results:

Hi, I really like what you're doing here. There's an unaccuracy in the sloped side of the building though. The point were it changes angle is much too low, it should be higher up. Just count te floors to see were it should be 2.gif. Otherwise, nice job.

Looks a lot better! Try to decrease the reflection quite a bit, though. I think it will look strange in SC4 if you keep it the way it is right now.

Try something for the glass like this:

Obviously you can edit it to match the color, or I can do it if you need.

Bixel, thanks! And as for the banded box section, I'm still working on that.

Scotty222, Damn it, sorry man. If I knew you had plans to do it, I wouldn't have done it. But your 3D modeling skills are far superior to mine so why don't you still give it a crack.

Paulvmontfort, Strange, everyone else seems to think that the shape is spot on but I can see where your coming from.

HONG KONG, Again you just saved my life with that shot of the roof, and yes I already had the floor plan. And on the marked picture don't worry, I've fixed the roof and that little thing hanging off the striped side tower is still to come.

DragonAnime, I think I'm gonna stick with the texture I have now but thanks for the help anyways! The real life tower is incredibly reflective on a sunny day anyway.

I've re-done the roof and fixed a few other problems. Apart from a few things left to do on the striped tower hanging off the right hand side I think the tower is done. Only have to do the base now...

Very nice model, but it seems very odd to have the same building to be reflected on all sides. Is the building in the reflection available for download?

Very nice indeed, but I have a problem with the reflections - they are too defined IMHO.

Another thing I couldn't help noticing (and that has nothing at all to do with your building 3.gif ): On that last real-life photo from Hong Kong you posted, the one where you can see Cheung Kong Centre and the Bank of China Tower, in the foreground there's the pyramid-shaped, brown rooftop of a building I've seen many times now, but only in parts. What the heck is that building? Does anybody know? From what I've seen (and that was never much more than maybe the upper third of it), it looks very interesting.

Grrr! Why didn't anyone tell me about this Globalphotos.org website! 32.gif That place is bloody a treasure chest of HK photo's! Do you know how much better my re-creation could have been if I had had all those wonderful reference pictures!...

On a side note, I'll have a new update of the AIG later on toady, It's almost done, just detailing the base and the night lights.

Oh yea, and THANKS FOR THE TRIXIE! lol, Most improved BATter. Never thought I'd see that attached to my name. A big thank you to whoever nominated me!

Okay, thanks everyone for your feedback. And on the issue of my texture being too reflective, most of you seem to like it so I'm not changing that. The real life building IS incredibly reflective.

Well I think the actual BAT is done now, all that's left to do is the night lighting. There is one problem though, see on the last render something weird happened to the little side poll things near the bottom. As you can see on the renders from other angles, they fit in with the shape of the building, but on that particular angel they get warped out of shape. I’ve tried everything I can think of and I can’t seem to fix them. Any ideas as to what's going on?

BTW hurry up and tell me if there's something I need to fix or do better before I render. What do you think of the extra stuff I added in like the pot plants and the flags?

Sorry, the first and second are just draft (crappy) renders. Didn’t have time to do them all good quality but you can imagine what they really look like.

I cant really see anything that needs imporving but please make sure the base is as well done as everything else. Cant really tell how it is in your low quality renders.
