Water Pipes

Are you going to miss laying water pipes?

  1. 1. Are you going to miss laying water pipes?

Something I'm not really going to miss in SC:S is laying water pipes.  I usually lay out the roads, lay out the zones, and am left wondering "Why won't the damn Sims move in ..... oh yeah, bloody pipes...."   I'm looking forward to being able to plop the power plant and just get things moving.

Not sure about water towers/pumps though, nice to have but not really necessary (and what societal energy would they use.... the industry one I suppose).

Wondering what others might think.....

I won't miss the pipe-laying, but the water in SimCity games should be handled like the power grid, IMO. If you need to take water long distances across undeveloped terrain, maybe have a water main "pipe" like the powerlines in SC4. Other than that, the buildings should connect themselves. The water buildings should still be there, however...pumps, towers, treatment centers for large cities, etc.

I have a mod that reduces the water radius of water towers, pumps, and water pipes.  As a result, I have to place my pipes closely for full coverage.  I also simulate hooking each building into the water grid by making a little water pipe extension under each zone, although I do this only for cosmetic reasons.

I will miss water pipes.

imo, there should be pump, pipe, treatment and water stations/towers.

i would rather the "water radius" be very large and come only off water stations; like the reservoir in Caesar!

the reason is to not crowd the map with water structures but to have a few which would do wonders to the look and feel,

a farm house with a water tower etc, in the city, a small substation that pump water to all buildings...

also how can you be a city planners if you don't have NIMBY buildings? 9.gif

I won't miss them at all.  IMO, water pipes were one of the unneccarily tedious aspects of SC4 that I will be glad to be rid of.

nope! it was boring, i couldnt focus on developing or re-developing because too much of my money was going to water pipe upkeep or there were too many pipe bursts! im glad theyre gone!

I think the implementation of water pipes in SC4 was lacking, but it's another level of game play I wish they would explore instead of ignore, and fix instead of nix.  It's an aspect of running a city plan and simple.

In fact, I would rather they make it so each building had to be connected, not just water, but power, sewage, and telecommunications as well.  But I realize I'm a tedious person, and I would like it if you can toggle each system in the city options page where you can control the level of interactivity you want, from automatic for the *****s and impatient all the way over to completely manual for the OCD crowd like me.

I was thinking the same thing.........

Really though, I would not miss them. At first I like laying water pipes down manually, because I did not always want to give my Sims water at first. But then when I did, I would usually lay pipes so that all areas had water. And after doing this for awhile, it can get a little tedious. So I've done the opposite of lasergoat has done and made up a mod so one plop of a water pump & whole city is wet.

Yes, I would miss them just like I'll miss zoning large swatches of landscape to allow building what I want bult there.  It may have been a tedius process to some people but the overall effect of using it towards reducing my budget is what gave it it's place in SC4 in my opinion.  The tediusness to some of having to lay the pipes can not be denied, but the overall effect of cosing my city money to place them and to maintain them is where the value is in water pipes and SC4 in my opinion.  Of course they can try to simulate it by just adding a couple numbers into the game to try to convince me that my city has water pipes but it will never be the same to me.

I think instead of nixing the idea, they should have thought it out and twisted it to better accomodate people instead of just chopping it out of the game all together.  Too much chopping is what has led SCS to be a SC down a different path instead of building on an already superb game to making it even better.  They willy nilly chopped out much of what made SC4 a great game to trod down this "other" road that they are running down.

There were no water pipes in SimCity DS and that WAS a real SimCity game.

I hate water pipes and power lines, I even found a mod which eliminated the need for them in SC4

I agree with you, but to mod it into SimCity: Societies I would do the following (if I could do any modding beyond clumsily changing .txt documents after researching what they do): Power plants, water-supplying buildings, and waste collection/(temporary)storage, treatment, recycling, & disposal/waste-->energy  buildings with "helper items" (buildings, deco, and infrastructure) to increase efficiency and keep pollution away from where it would be detrimental (bad). Telecommunications behave different from other utilities, because they are more of a service than a utility; they entertain people with television, radio, movies, and telephone which are all now included in the internet and on SmartPhones [if Helio owners are insulted by me calling their Helios, phones, they must remember Apple, Inc. called their do-it-all gadget the iPhone (even though people were calling it iEverything, just as SimFans referred to spore as SimEverything before it was given a name)]. Internet as a utility is often used less by the lower classes and more often used by the industries/businesses and people active in the global market & economy (by far less localized). This would mean having a limit of 12 over-the-air entertainment TV stations with 1 news, 15-20 (each) local cable/satellite and FM stations, 2-5 (each) regional stations for cable/satellite and AM stations, and 3 central offices of continental/global stations/hubs/ISPs/Online Service

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

I hated laying pipes. I always just laid them out all crooked and random so I didnt have to worry about them, and those people always nagging about not having water! Geez! there's people in the Simworld who don't have any drinking water, think about them! 3.gif

And what about water pollution? With pipes you was able to solve the pollution problem without water treatment plant.

I'll say you this: Every simplification in SIM CITY games is bad for me.

edit:

And I'm really not looking forward Sim City: Societies (the game with gameplay and graphics for little kids).

I suppose I can get by without pipes and pumping stations and whatnot

What I WILL miss:

Highways

Elevated highways

4 lane surface arteries (maybe streets and roads since EVERY street seems like a 4 lane surface artery now)

Subways

Freight and commuter rail

one way streets

ferries

monorail

45 degree angled roads (since we can't seem to have City Life style roads at any angle)

massive sprawling cities

mods of realistic airports

etc

etc
