America's Supertalls

The Transbay project never bothered me; what I like about it is the smaller and medium sized buildings that lead around it. I always thought that made supertalls better looking.

The Chicago Spire, however, is too standalone: it's an ugly eyesore that would look much better as a downtown centerpiece. Ah, well...

thanks to those idiotic NIMBYs, south bay tower will most likely not be built. isnt south station going to be 695? as it said on some other site, "only in Boston do you have NIMBYs complaining that a 600 foot tower will interfere with air traffic when there is an 800 foot tower right next to it" 3.gif

actually, SF is the Boston of the west coast, because Boston came first (first big city in america!, also we have first public beach, first public park, and a bunch of other firsts 3.gif)quote>

Last I heard was that the city and MBTA finally signed off on South Station Tower. I know that area is a touchy area. Logan is the largest airport that is that close to downtown. The new Seport District (or South Boston) will not have any towers taller than 300 feet due to the flight path.  Also, you did get it right. San Fransisco is the Boston of the west. Boston was founded in 1630 and soon became the largest city and port in the new world. San Francisco was founded in 1776, when Boston was [Yes, we know 3.gif ]

I have to disagree. the Chicago Spire looks awesome and in maybe 30 to 40 yrs, there'll be tons of buildings like that. The skyline will be transformed from a steel skyline to a glass one. Its only a matter of time and the Chicago Spire is the first step to a more modern skyline (which I think is ok... the current skyline has told its story and it time for Chicago to move on)

Oh and I love that 80 South Street in NY. Cubes held together by metal poles... my dream home...

UGLY UGLY UGLY UGLY!!!!

I hope 80 South Street doesnt get built. It looks like butt chocolate. Ugh... UGLY! Sure its modern like the Chicago Spire... but the Spire looks like a building (and an awesome looking building at that...) 80 South Street doesnt even look like a building. Whos the idiot who designed it and who are the idiots that aprroved it? UGH!!!!!!!!

The rest of those buildings look good though. Chicago's gonna get 3 more Supertalls and I like the design for the Crown LV. NYC is getting some nice buildings too.

Yeah. New York City has 3,663 highrises. 3.gif

Well, there are three more proposed supertall skyscrapers in New York City. I'll post a more detailed reply once a rendering is created. These supertalls are said to be taller than the Empire State Building and maybe even the Freedom Tower.

Two of the three supertalls will, in fact, destroy Madison Square Garden. Also, although the new claim is that they are different heights by about 400 ft, the two supertalls that will destory the MSG *will be twin towers. Edit: *may be

The other supertall is this. Here's a fuzzy rendering:

    Height is unknown.

i dont understand the issue with logan and skyscrapers. the only runway that is lined up with downtown is this one, and it appears to be heading northeast, not southwest towards the financial district.

What's MSG? Other than that, I like the tower, and it will definitely put Boston more on the map than it is now. Also, when I was flying out of Boston, we flew right toward downtown. Don't ask me how, it was freakin' United Airlines. Leonardo

MSG is Madison Square Garden is a famous stadium in NYC. Look it up on Wikipedia for more info if u want.

I don't want them to destroy MSG. I've never been in it, but it i famous. Building a Supertall on it would be like tearing down the Statue of Liberty for a supertall. You just can't.

Say what! They can't [insert expletive of your choice here] destroy MSG! That's [insert expletive of your choice here] riciculous! Move it over a block, jeez! There's plenty of room! Besides, if you get rid of MSG, where will the Knicks or whoever plays there go? Like the previous post, it's almost as if they were destroying the Statue of Liberty to build a condo or something.

EDIT: anyone heard of the Cintas Tower? Go look over at Emporis!

Pretty soon L.A. will be on the grid with our skyline set to double in size to 1,500 skyscrapers combined by 2050. I've heard of the Cintas Tower.....doubt it will get built though......

    Oh how the LA people go crazy because finally they are seeing Sprawl is not the way. It shall be quite interesting especially of that magnitued sounds a lil Dubai-ish. Well with that many scrapers comes the need for better PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION and well the freeways will need to be fixed as this situation will not help the cloggage at all. I think with that plan LA should make a new Dodger Stadium! So does that mean soon South Central will be covered in scrapers? that means the OC may become a crime haven. Too bad for those surf bums! ({ust a joke =)}

The runways at Logan operate in both directions. The airport is in the middle of the harbor, so wind and weather conditions, as well as time of day due to noise regulations, determine what runways and what directions they run. That runway you show is directly lined up with the South Boston Seaport district. That is the area that has a strict height restriction. That is also the area of biggest developement. The rest of Boston had building restrictions because Boston is 75% landfill. Much of the financial district was in the harbor in the 1700's. That runway you show is used very often. Planes take off, head towards the city and then turn north after they cross the Back Bay area. It's actually quite weird to be in downtown and see the planes head toward town.

Hahahaha skyliner22 thats so funny! Although i do wonder how are they going to fit all of those in? that sounds like half of manhattan. But at least NYC has great public transportation i wonder how will LA handle that? They already have huge problems with the highways now. Also are the LA ppl suddenly going to start puffing their chests and acting like theyre the best because theyre finally going to have a real skyline not a ton of little ones? I hope not although i am happy for them with as many ppl that live out their they deserve somethin to enjoy about going downtown.4.gif

The FAA killed a nice skyscraper for downtown Tampa because of Peter O'Knight Airport which is 2 miles south of Downtown Tampa, and has no landing or taking off things in the direction of downtown.

Why don't they redo the runways at Logan in such a way so that the flight paths don't go near downtown? I know its not as easy as it sounds, redoing the runways of a major airport and all, but Chicago O'Hare is redoing its runways. Maybe after this, Boston can have they skyline it deserves.

It doesn't matter. The FAA doesn't seem to care what way the runways are pointing. It's mostly about simple straight distance from the airport in any direction. After all, planes are capable of turning, and it's preferable to have them able to do that in case of emergency or whatever without having to worry about hitting some tall building. The only real solution to this would be to get rid of Logan airport and replace it with an airport further away from the city. It'd allow Boston to build taller, but at the same time it'd make flying in and out of it that much less convenient.

Better solution is to simply put the really tall buildings further west, around where the Prudential Center and all that are. You're further from the airport there, so you don't have to worry about building height quite as much.

    --------

As for tearing down Madison Square Garden to put up a couple skyscrapers.... somehow I doubt that such a proposal would ever go through. For the reasons already mentioned. It would no doubt be quite unpopular with the public, and you'd then have to go build another stadium elsewhere.

....then again, Yankee Stadium's getting torn down in a few years and nobody's gone and stormed Steinberner's home with pitchforks yet....

Skyliner, the numbers of high-rise growth in Los Angeles aren't a joke. It hasn't been mentioned much in the media because of the booms in Las Vegas, Miami, and even Chicago. Dodger Stadium is indeed planned to be torn down and replaced with a resort including about 3 high-rises. It's new location is rumored to be either on the Cornfield park, or along the L.A. River to give it a Yankee Stadium type of look.

nerdly-Boston has devoloped what i would call a "second downtown" in the back bay, where the prudential center, 111 huntington, hancawk, etc. are.

skyliner-your just a jealous SFer who wishes there city was growing like LA 3.gif

Trust me ive walked down San Franciscan streets its crazy! well some residential skyscrapers are going up to ease the strain but the question is... can these people afford it?

    LOL!

I'm the one that posted that on several different websites and it has exploded all over the Internet! 17.gif

I think you meant to post this.

That was posted in the Houston Development Thread II (click rdavis4559's link) on Skyscraperpage which was orginally in a Chicago compilation thread. Then, it was posted on HAIF by me as well as other sites. 3.gif

    *enough of my boasting*

Anyway, to the article. I really hope they don't plan to build the world's tallest skyscraper in Houston or LA. It will really kill the beautiful skyline of both.

Hehe patriots its just the friendly rivalry against us two cities! No CRASH i didnt mean the building boom was a joke, i meant the thing about the OC and stuff. Anyways yea SF is a very small area, thats why it is the second densest city in US. But if SF did do such a project we will end up looking like HK, nearly same area size. But the quakes keep us in check from going too radical and dont forget those hills!

EDIT: They cant build the world's tallest in LA, are they nuts, it is still earthquake country. In Chicago it will look way too weird, Houston well i dont know about that. Especially saying taller than Burj and way taller so it keeps its title for a while well thats a bit too much.

Okay, I decided not to make that thread. The building is too much of a fantasy and dream.

    Anyway, excellent news:

The Chicago Spire is under construction as of 10:50 am CST (Chicago time) today! 9.gif

skyliner-SF should be able to build better taller buildings now that theres anti-quake technology now, right? isnt the transamerica thing the most earthquake proof building there is?anyway, i think i would like the worlds tallest building in chicago or new york. LA as you said, is still earthquake county.
