Well thats weird, why would a developer aquire land in Houston and then decide to possibly build the world's tallest there or in Los Angeles or Chicago.

Actually Patriots, SF is in a scraper boom! The biggest since perhaps the 70s! The tallest residential west of mississippi was topped off this week and the tallest building west of mississippi is approved! SOMA is getting a revitalization of scrapers adding to the financial district to expand downtown, and a new neighborhood Mission Bay is underway with a UCSF extension! So in other words SF is in the building boom! But it cant have the magnitude of LA's skyscraper madness because to the West of downtown is Nob hill, one of the steepest hills in the city, to the east the bay and to the north historic Chinatown! So we are trying our best with what we have!

Well, there are three more proposed supertall skyscrapers in New York City. I'll post a more detailed reply once a rendering is created. These supertalls are said to be taller than the Empire State Building and maybe even the Freedom Tower.

Two of the three supertalls will, in fact, destroy Madison Square Garden. Also, although the new claim is that they are different heights by about 400 ft, the two supertalls that will destory the MSG *will be twin towers. Edit: *may be

The other supertall is this. Here's a fuzzy rendering:

Height is unknown.

I love the Bayfront Plaza and Chicago Spire, it's about time American skyscrapers embraced some modern design. The Transnbay projects looks simply awful I'm afraid, San Francisco is a beautiful city and I believe that would be destroyed by the proposed new buildings.

I used to think the Chicago Spire was an eyesore on the skyline (sort of) but going to the site made it look nice!

Micah-Trans National Place is not almost dead. construction should begin in 08, but they are behind schedule because the original architect dropped off the team after being asked to make the tower wider or somthing like that. it could be anywhere from 76-79 floors now i think, but a lot wider, and hopefully, with a more interesting design.

Unfortunately, the Chicago Spire will be topped out BEFORE the Freedom Tower.

I guess i'm not suprised that Crown Las Vegas is probably not gonna make it to Approval, especially when Las Vegas and Miami got hit the hardest by the Real Estate Slump.

Fortunately, it appears that America's 3 most powerful cities have steamrolled right over the Housing Crisis!:

New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago!

Even with Emporis and Skyscraperpage, one can't get all of the high-rise development occuring in these Metropolises.

For example, "The Big Three", which all have populations(estimated) of at least 3,000,000...all have roughly 200 skyscrapers planned, proposed, approved, or under construction!

    Take that Osama!

Hmmm... that rectangular one looks a bit out of place but I love how the other one looks like the Empire State.

Nevermind... that is the Empire State... 41.gif

Anyway, it is a little too boxy for me and seems too far from other buildings its height (the only one being the Empire State). Some more info would be good Micah. I'm curious. Is this proposed, approved, or what? Stuff like that. If you can find it, that would be good.

Well, this is all from a member of skyscraperpage called Jularc. Here's what he posted there:

    Completion: 2011

Situated in the heart of Manhattans newest neighborhood, the dynamic Hudson Yards District, 3 Hudson Boulevard, "The GiraSole" will be a gateway for the West Side and an icon of green architecture for the 21st Century. From its sky gardens to the reaches of the new Hudson Boulevard Park, this new 1.6 million square foot tower will be surrounded by green. Soaring to a height of over a thousand feet, it will offer unparalleled views south and west over Hudson River Park, the High Line and the new park and development of the Hudson Rail Yards. A solar power-generating tower, "The GiraSole" will set a new standard for mixed use development by uniting premium corporate offices and the most exclusive residences with the state of the art in environmentally sustainable design. The project is on track for LEED Platinum certification.

I'm sorry to say this, but most skyscrapers built in the last ten years are hideous to me. I know cities undergo "evolutions", such as Neoclassical, then Art-Deco, then Modernism, and now whatever it is. Cities change, but sometimes not for the better. I just got back from New York, and all these projects mentioned (especially the new BOA Center) are ruining famous cities. I'll admit, there are some ultra-modern buildings in New York that make the city better (4 Times Square and Hearst Tower come to mind). Even in my own little city of Sacramento, there are tons of ultra-mods being built and proposed that will quite frankly make the city look like a large crystal. I mean, everything comes down eventually. Maybe in twenty years, demand for cleaner offices will be so high they'll tear down Grand Central and the Chrysler Building to build some large geode thing that produces more energy than it takes in and can purify the air. I have a great picture showing the new BOA Center, and it just scrapes the sky. Really, it is that hideous among the other buildings.

I actually like modern glass towers. Really, the bigger concern is not that the new buildings look bad (they don't), but rather that they kinda clash with NYC's older buildings. Still, the concern here is minimal, since New York already has lots of buildings from different eras in skyscraper construction following different styles. Myself, I actually don't mind the clash, it makes for some interesting juxtaposition. Besides, in a city as big as New York, it helps to have variety. It'd get awful monotonous if every building in the skyline followed the same style. Besides, history has shown that buildings which everyone thinks are hideous when they're first built can grow on people and become rather popular. The old World Trade Center is a prime example of this. Everyone hated those buildings when they first went up. But then photogrophers and other artists started to take to them, and the common opinion had completely done a 180 by 2001.

Though, I'm sure time contributes a lot, too. Any major new building is bound to get criticism. But then time passes, people get used to it, and it even sometimes starts to be iconic of the city. In fact, you see this pattern with a lot of things, not just buildings. Everyone hated Dante for his work back when he first wrote it, but now he's considered the best author in Italian history.

Nothing can ever be truly appreciated when it's new. Bottom line.

NYC is one of my favorite cities so i'd really hoped it would have the tallest building in the country and the world. I now do not like Chicago for their tower-thingy they're building... seriously, it looks kinda eyesore-ish. And tear down MSG!? No! Hello, MSG is an NYC icon! It can't be destroyed! The Freeedom Tower complex thing looks pretty good, and at 1776ft., it's going to at least be pretty popular.

But what about international? Dubai seems to be pushing for most famous city in the world, what with its sail-shaped hotel, Lighthouse Tower, and Triple Palm Tree and Earth Island Projects. And Shanghai and Hong Kong seem to be turning into major financial centers. I heard something about Tokyo's (ugh) 2/3 of a mile high skyscraper. I personally did not like their proposed ideas of 13 or so curved inward steps thousands of ft. high. Apparently that tower though is not very popular proposed idea. It'd hold a few huundred people and have gardens on top of each step. Ugh, Ugh, Ugh.

Nobody has to agree with me, though. Everyone has their own opinion and therefore i shall not try to influence it.

Well, The Bank of America Tower in Seattle (BOAT Building, lol3.gif) used to be the Columbia Seafirst Center. Really nice name, and BofA just had to rename it BOAT. Weasels.

I feel the same way about LA's tallest. They originally named it Library Square Phase One, which is the best name it's ever had IMO. Then it became First Interstate World Center, which wasn't too bad, but was still a corporate label. Later it was renamed Library Tower, which is what most Angelenos still call it, until US Bank bought the naming rights and stuck their big logo on its crown. US Bank Tower. Bleagh.

I agree that it's nice when buildings have unique names that have nothing to do with their big-name tenants, like the Empire State Building

Of course, though, I've painted myself into a corner. What else could you call the Chrysler Building, John Han***** Center, Sears Tower...

Doesn't it seem like every single month there's a new supertall to talk about?

Here's the latest supertall called W. 54th by Jean Nouvel:

It's definitely over 300m. Some think it's anywhere from 1,100 feet to 1,300 with the crown of the tower taking about a quarter of the height of this tower. It is 75 stories.

    92245.jpg

This tower will be very skinny, but it will definitely make an impact on the skyline.

My opinion: It will be a landmark in New York City. It's beautiful. 16.gif

Here's another photo of the supertall from another source:

I also think supertalls are really cool, but don't you think it reaches a certain point where it gets outta hand? I don't want new york to have 500 1000 footers! I don't want it to turn into dubai. i think the world and its new buildings are starting to become ridiculous....not to mention increasingly uglier...yes im talking to you new york..

I myself never understand why so many people consider all these newfangled buildings "ugly". I mean come on, it's as if they wish architecture stopped changing after the 1930's and never advanced any further.

This building actually looks rather nice (to me, anyway), though the discussion may be moot since a lot of skyscrapers get proposed and then never actually built for one reason or another. I'd hold the issue until it actually gets approved.
