Even though she is a latecomer to the Internet, Sigbritt Lothberg (a Swede) who is 75 years of age likely has the world's fastest home uplink! She has a 40 gigabit-per-second fiber-optic connection. 6.gif In less than 2 seconds, she can download a full-length movie on her home computer which is many thousand times faster than most residential connections. Her son, Peter, and Hafsteinn Jonsson (head of the Karlstad city network unit) worked together to install the connection. Jonsson wanted to prove "there are no limitations to Internet speed."

His mother isn't exactly making the most of her high-speed connection. She only uses it to read Web-based newspapers.quote>

oh well, be glad you have broad band. i'm stuck here running at a turtle spead of 44k (that is what the pop up says when i dial in) but half the time it is only...say.... 5k, and shes on what? 40Gbs!

that is un real. the average usb/flash drive (high speed ones too) arn't even 1/900th the speed. that woman is flying.

40gigs? that is unbalivable. i thought harddrives cant even store stuff that fast! how do i subscribe to this!

AFAIK most normal connections can also go blazing fast, but many service providers and broadband modems limit the speed for various reasons, and also that hacking the devices to go really fast is either breaking the terms of service or a violation of the law, probably both.

I dont know if this true, one of my friends told me about it

LOL!!!  This is an amazing story...

Just goes to show you where our technology is going... 40 gigs a sec will be the standard in a few years... broadband will be the dialup of tomorrow, and dialup will be non-existent, for lack of a funnier way to put it... 21.gif

That would be no use. There are only a handful, if any servers in the world that have connections that fast. I'm perfectly happy with 10Mbps. Could be faster, but I'm ok.

It is actually true, however, I don't think I'd risk up to 25 years in prison for it.

Also, the odds of us getting connections that fast in the next few years is very low.  The Internet2 consortium made massive headlines when it achieved a paltry 20Gbps, and they only ran that connection for a few minutes because it they had to use 5 major university networks and it literally cost over $1 million an hour to run.

how cow that's fast! that's 4444.44 times faster then my internet connection! 43.gif

And on the other topic of bandwidth caps, yes they limit the speed of our internet connections intentionally, usually so that all the people connected to a single neighborhood hub wont have more then another and so it doesn't overload it.

Think of bandwidth as a pie, lets say you and 3 other people want a piece of pie, the ISP will cut you and everyone a individual slice, which would be 1/4 slices. Now lets say more people want pie, they cut it into smaller pieces so each person can get a slice, however, when the pieces of pie start to get too small, they give your area a bigger pie, and cut it into the same number of slices.

However, if you want to get more bandwidth, you could steal some of another persons slice, which is illegal.

The legal alternative is to ask the ISP for a bigger slice, now this is where things get weird...

Some ISPs will simply make a better pie for your area and give you a slice of it, OR they simply make the first pie bigger and give you a bigger slice then the other people.

That's is how Cable internet and some DSL providers work in my area at least.
