What is the functional difference between using Elevated Rail for transit vs. using Monorail, besides EL's ability to connect to Ground Level Rail?

Monorail is a higher wealth system, and is affects high wealth growth more. El-rail is less expensive, and designed for the lower wealths.

When talking about the game default elevated rail, is the same transit system as the subway.  They connect, and function the same.  Elevated rail doesn't connect to the ground railroad.

As Masochist mentioned, monorail is faster, in fact it is the fastest land transit.

el does connect to GLR though...with the combo of el-GLR-subway, monorail is pointless to me.

If memory serves, Monorail also has higher capacities and is just held back by stations and not traffic on the rail.

Monorail trains look better. El is compatible with rail/subway/GLR.

El-rail is designed to supplement your city's subway system. It is also primarily designed for inside-city commuting. Capacity limit is 10,000.

Monorail is designed to quickly ferry your sims outside your city. I have extensive monorail networks and I would say at least 90% of my riders commute outside their city of residence with monorail. Monorail is also a lot faster, as was mentioned, and capacity is limited only by stations. The monorail itself has unlimited capacity.

I almost never use el-rail. Since it's basically the same as the subway, there's really no reason for me to use it at all. Much of my transit design is to get sims to the monorail from the subway and then from monorail to the city boundaries. It works quite well. 4.gif

My 2 cents say monorail looks neat. Zelgadis makes the most solid points, as usual, and I'll side with him. I personally only use elevated rail when the aesthetics of my city call for it. It's rare - subways are much more efficient and are much easier to build in tight areas.

LBarr2910: if you want more use out of your transit networks, I got three words for ya: develop, develop, develop. Plop a big ole 100 squares of zones around your stations and they'll be used. Other factors are to be considered, of coarse - of the most obvious: where the track leads... too nowhere? - then, no use. to jobs? - it'll be used quicker than a *******i'll just censor myself here****... Maybe you just need to wait, your Sims will eventually have no choice.

How direct is the rail to the edge of the map? How direct are the nearest roads? If the road route is significantly shorter, the industry will choose to use roads instead of rails to transport everything.

my more than 50% of my monorail stations are over capacity..some even having 200% usage (even the high capacity ones) since i linked 5 cities with a monorail line (replacing my elevated rail)

is this normal? and what are the effects of the over capactiy stations?

oh, and is it alright to have more than 1 station in a city (like tons!) ive substituted them for my EL so i have many stations per city

i see a seaport at the bottom, at least there's a lighthouse so your freight is most likely going there
