A shame DSL is not much faster then dial up.

Yeah... you have to leave to computer on downloading them forever. I remember when I had to download from the STEX with dial-up, even.

@Easy Bakes: You'd be suprised how slow Dialup is to DSL...

to give you an Idea...a averge modem has a limit of 56Kbps. The DSL being provided at at&t for $10 is at 768Kbps. That's 13 times faster then Dialup! Mind you, it's not anywhere near as fast as other services(I move at 4.8Mbps Max.), but considering thats at the same price as netzero, I'd jump at that if I was stuck with dialup.

DSL is definitely faster, but not as fast as cable.

What I found funny about this story is that AT&T isn't advertising it. They still want to get those $19.95 people to sign up, so they can make some extra bucks. It is even funnier that what they are doing is perfectly legal. Talk about a loophole... the FCC must be ticked, but there is little they can do about it, since the agreement is signed.

It is actions like this, taken by AT&T, that reinforce my dislike for juggernaut corporatism. As if they don't make enough money, already.

The problem with cable, as my friend puts it, is that it gets tired sometimes....most of the time...and when cable gets tired, it says, "load the page yourself" and you sit around and stare at a blank screen for 15 minutes.

I think area density is coming into play. The biggest problem with cable it that it is not dedicated. The pipe is shared by, for example, all users in an apartment building, or maybe all homes in a city block. The cable companies needs to expand it to accommodate, but they usually whine that they don't have the money, or that it is "in the works". DSL, though, is dependent on your distance from the CO. Any more than three miles and service degrades significantly.

dsl can move as fast as cable...i have a max of 1.5mbps on my dsl. it all depends on your modem, area, and wiring (or in my case lack there of...i have wireless) and although most dial-up maxes out at 56kbps, most operate in the 26.6kbps to 33.3kbps range. i love my dsl...it flies, and it beats the pants off of my old dial-up.

I don't think you get 1.5 MBPS over wireless....

anyway, for cable, you need to buy cable TV (and since I don't watch much TV, yeah) and the cable companies really whack you with fees and high prices.

No, you don't HAVE to get cable TV for Cable internet, just go down to a Cable providing store and ask about it.

Cox provides a nice three-in-one type deal. Cable TV, Cable Internet, and Telephone service "all on one bill"(Actually we had to call and complain to even get everything into one envelope). Anyways, McAfee says my internet runs at 1.5Mbps, but it does drop to 1Mbps when too many people are on. They have a cool web page that gauges how fast your computer downloads a file.

I'm not sure if I used to have dial-up or DSL...but it didn't matter back then, I didn't use the internet too often. Now I've got Comcast high-speed and it's outrageous in comparison...DSL is a good speed likewise however and the best kind is almost as fast as high-speed...however most DSL uses the phone line so it's inconvenient.

Why would this be inconvenient? DSL doesn't block out your phone like dial-up did, ours doesn't anyway.

If you dont have a phone. ( land line)

Which is a trend today, why pay for a phone line you never use?

DSL does go through the phone line, however, the information transmitted is at a higher frequency than your telephone so there is no interference and thus, none of those weird sounds on your telephone.

Also if you had a cell phone and call forwarding

you could be on dial up and not get kicked off.

I get at least 56Mbps (Bytes are for storeage, bits are for connections) over my wireless connection, it's linked to my DSL modem though, so I don't have much of an improvement over the 3Mbps DSL line.

DSL is fast when compared to dial up, but can be slow compared to cable. I have faster then DSL. I have a downloading speed 6MegaBits pre second( 821.3 kB) and the uploading speed is .47MegaBits(60.5 kB) pre second.
