Becoming afraid to post

Ok so I know the argument about spam has been going on for ages but I;m actually becoming afraid to post on SC4 fansites any more. Especially in the CJ section of this site. It seems to me that if you post more than two messages in the CJ section you seem to be branded a spammer.

Okay so maybe not two posts but you can undertsand what I mean. Its the same with forum games. I'm sure I'm not the only one that now hesitates now when posting especially as lots of the time if you do spam you don't mean it and don't realize it either. 

I do know people that clearly spam I will not list any names. I have spammed on the site without knowing so and did it without realizing. I'm sure we've all done it once or twice.

So should we be afraid to post know or shoudl this whole spam thing be abolished? I think it is starting to scare so people off posting I have seen arguments happening on chats and in ordinary topics about spam where one member goes and tells the other member they are spamming and then they get into a fight about it but surely this shouldn't happen.

Surely spamming cannot be such a big turning point. When I had my old account nearly two years ago before I lost the passwrod last year I wasn't afraid to post what I though and wasn't going to be sent angry PMs or angry replies in topics as spam didn't exist then and it shouldn't now.

How did spam come about any way?

Well, I don't know about the CJ section, but in my sections, people post a lot of stuff that many would call spam.  However, we tend to keep pretty low key there.

Perhaps you should always try to get some content into your posts.  A "Gee, isn't that nice." really is spam, you know.

Spam comments are like hey great work, love the pics, awsome etc. without actually seen an update or picure. Take the STEX comments, they are considered spammer but they are not.

Nope...you shouldn't be afraid to post.  You just have to be careful about what you post, is all.  I mean, being a lurker is fine, but if you want to post, just put a little thought into it, and you'll be good.

Spam comments like those that MarcosMX pointed out are nice to receive sometimes, but usually they just get a glance and then are forgotten.  Even adding things like "I really like how you did this" to a comment can greatly up the "value" of the post, because it shows that you actually took time to consider and appreciate the work done.

Spammers can also be people who post things that have absolutely nothing to do with the topic, or who post two or three different posts in a row.  Those are frowned upon because they interrupt the flow of the thread and make it that much more tedious to look through (and some topics are long enough as is...).

So just put a little thought into your posts, and you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

spam is when you post just to bump your thread, or post a generic comment(nice work) just to up your post count.

I don't personally consider "nice work" to be spam. I think that's a compliment. Sure, some value to your post is nice, but when I do work that someone thinks is nice, I don't mind if someone lets me know.

If it isn't good work, and someone says it is, or if someone just says that it is bad and doesn't give any reason, that's spam. If someone posts something random and unrelated to the topic, that's spam.

Personally, I don't get irked when I scroll down the page and all the replies are by the same person. But I do get annoyed when every other or every third post is by the same person.

Since I was told I was spamming a bit - I did change my messages I didn't mean for them to be spam so now I always make them more constructive but then it feels like the comments are worth nothing because i'm deliberatly making them so I don't spam (if that makes sense).

It doesn't really make sense, no. Why would you feel they are worth nothing because you took more time to consider the whole update before commenting? No one is asking you to make stuff up so it won't look like you're spamming. Try to avoid saying the same thing always, but still give your honest reaction.

You have been here since 2003 and I have been here for just over two months and I nearly have as many posts as you -  Its not just you with low post either - does that make me look like I'm spamming? Or does it mean I'm just a over-active member.

My registration date belies how long I've actually been around here. I only started posting on the forums in October last year, so I've really only been active for six months. I joined in '03 when I first got SC4, back when I was still on the abomination known as 'dial-up'. (This also explains why this is one of the few sites where I'm actually registered under my real name. ) Between '03 and '06 I rarely visited the site.

Spam is flooding the Internet with many copies of the same message, in an attempt to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it .

So i dont think your a spammer at all,in any shape or form . Just an active member that leaves fun comments .

Most of the time I don't think I'm spamming but other members do. And then those members tell other members which then gives me the title of spammer. See what I mean. It has happened before.

Youre not a spammer cleaner 475 all the comments on the cj section i have seen from you has been encouraging people and when needed you have given constructive comments. I've been a member for just over a month and have already had 150 messages and i have always made constructive comments and said what i like about a cj so youre not a spammer

Im sure that if the mods here felt you was spamming they wouldnt hesitate to let you know . Unless it comes from a mod ,i wouldnt worry about other people opinions to much ..

cleaner-its possible to have high post counts without spamming. my suggestion-you can point out one or two things you liked or think needs improvment. You can make a joke or personal comment(look through VALTIO for examples of these. then add the end you can add on, great work, or good job etc.

To me spam will always come in a small can with a key that inevitably breaks off.

If you really want spam take a look here. Catchy music or what?

If someone pays a compliment or simply says "well done" then that can hardly be considered spam (imho). Not every post needs to contain something constructive, though sometimes it would be nice to be told why someone things something is well done.
