I fully support your ideas, and believe an open forum for development is the best way to make this a reality. I believe the biggest challenges right now are getting people with the experiance in programming and getting (or maybe even making) a good game engine. I have some programming experiance, and would be glad to help. I could set up a project website and forums (I have some graphic and web design experiance too) so we can start getting this thing off the ground. If you want my help with this, feel free to PM me! Also, I'm just throwing this out there, but mabye you should consider doing this open-source. I'm sure a site like sourceforge.net would be willing to host it.

On another note, and going back to some posts made in 2007, I support a six demand system, combining Cockatoo-210893 and hamsterTK's ideas; Residential, Retail & Entertainment, Office, Industry, Agriculture, and Hotel. I agree with keeping the color coding too. Maybe there should be some sort of density thing like in SC4?

Here's a radical idea of mine: Has anyone ever played Civilization IV? Remember Civics? Maybe we can have something like that so the player can choose between a Communistic, Orwellian city, a Utopian Democracy, or whatever? And each one would have benifits: ie Communistic benifits industry, hurts commerce drastically; Democracy boosts everything slightly. Just an idea.

If you want to make a C++ game, good luck. I'm already working on the PHP game. When you make a C++ game, show me, as I'd be interested to see its outcome. For now, I'm sticking with a web based game. Here's something that you can do with a web based game: anyone with a web browser can use it. In May 2006, 694 Million people worldwide had an Internet connection. Imagine how many people have a connection now.

You can see a small development version with only the design here:

http://tektek.oxyrack.com/citiez

I'm implementing functions, they just haven't been added. I'll let you know when I've finished the functions. If anyone wants to join in and help with graphics or the PHP development, feel free to PM me.

My criticism of a web-based game is that the graphics and game play experience >could< be of a lesser quality. However, regardless of how the game is produced, you have my full support. Also, it seems like you are offended by my opinion, if this is the case I apologize. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors and will be following it's development closely. Thank you.

I like the ideas, exept mayby instead of having the tiles we should be able to place things anywhere we want without having to wory about the grid, like in Sims 3.Also we should have like a huge multiplayer game where you start off with a small piece of land and later you could by pieces of land from other players.

Oh wow, this brings back memories. Over the past few years 2(?) of these projects have been suggested and I know one got relatively far until it came to the actual programming 4.gif. It had its own website/forum. The driving reason behind at least one was the dissapointment that was SimCity Societies.

Anyone care to remind me of what they were named?

Looks like you have a good start.

I was actually thinking the other night about an ideal approach to a city building game.  As has been seen with City Life, it is quite demanding on computers and video cards, moreso than Sim City 4 already is.  Details have to be decreased to expect decent performance.  It would seem to me that the isometric approach of Sim City 4 is perfect for city building, but also permit a 3d mode to be able to actually enter the city.  In a way, it would be like combining (if anyone remembers these) Sim City 2000 and Streets of Sim City into one.

I suggest C# (sharp) as you can learn it quickly if you know C++ already. C# has a lot of nice programming comfortability

Hello there,

Ive been arround for a while... a couple of months ago i atempt to create a new (open source) city building game. It was called.. Open Simcity.

This was just a test for me, if it was/is posible to create a game for this genre just by myself. I can assure you that a 'team' is needed to create such games. There is no way people can do it alone. (example video's below)

So here i am. I left that game for what it was and moved on. But still, i think.. this community has so many members. It should at least be possible to begin creating a 3d simcity game with some few members of this community (who have programming knowledge, im sure they are here!) .

The 2 above video's where created using microsoft's XNA framework. This framework is pretty amazing.. easy to use. Take a look at it (here).

I opened this topic to see IF there are people intrested.. even if you are a modeler (designing 3d models) you possible can help.

So, what do you say? This project can take years, but i don't care.. as long we 'atleast' try.

I can't say anything about CitiesXL.. yes i've been playing the beta and i'm a little disappointed.. sorry can't say why and cant post screenshots.. it's simply not what i was looking for.

.Very realistic city simulations.. with complete freedom of making roads.. from ideas that came from this community (lane upgrades, and unique settings).. to custom content.. realistic intersections.. and not cartoonish...

ARE YOU OUT THERE?.

I have basic C++, and I'm willing to learn C#.

I'll be part of the team if I can learn it to some extent withing a month or two. I currently have experience with GML and C++.

isn't there already a "simtropolis, the game" project??? the projectcb official board in simcity societies general discussion si already attempting a "simtropolis, the game" project and is well into the project development. I think that this is a good idea, but I don't know enough about it. what are you using more specifically. I like having a dream for things like that, thats my dream too but I have so little time to do anything that I could never really do enough for much. I think that this will take some time to organize, it has taken months for the other project, yet they have just begun production.

let me know if there is anything I can help with now, I would be glad to take on a couple simtropolis related things. I am also only 13(almost 14.) so I am a bit young to do much. I hope that I can help. -Blakesterville.

PS:  I had some problems posting this (it has presented all kinds of problems, sorry abotu the formating, etc...)

I just have a question;

I think the 2.5D is better and more adequate for city building games, and 3D seems to take a lot more time and is harder, and doesn't allow for higher levels of detail.

2.5D, that is what it is called right? The way it is in SC4.

I know that as technology advances, people think 3D should be easy and imprlemented in all games.

But, if you kept it in 2.5D you could focus more on the actual gameplay, and add detail and stuff to buildings.

Again, this is just a question. I have no idea about programming or anything related to it.

It just seems to me that making a game in 3D is harder and more demanding on computers?

I think that even if a good 3D engine with great graphics was made, that I would still rather have a city building game in 2.5D.

Maybe it's just me.

Anyway, if you are serious about creating a game, make a topic where people could post ideas, because I have a few that haven't really been mentioned much. Ideas for gameplay that is, not about building and programming a game.

Sorry, "Simtropolis: The Game" is already taken... you can find it in the SimCity Societies board. It's written in PHP, so anyone with a web browser (whether it be on their PC or on an iPhone or even a regular mobile phone) would be able to play.

"Open SimCity" is a good name, but I'm not sure if you can use the SimCity name. Try something like "OpenMetropolis."

Well the name is not the biggest problem. It's people with skills and motivation to form a team.

Well, have you came up with a name yet? Because "Open SimCity" would violate EA/Maxis' trademark... Anyhow, other than that, it looks good!
