I was hoping they would tweak the zoning aspect of the game but not eliminate completely!

Why can't the whole community make a new game? With all the stuff we want?

Software development has two main parts to it, the design phase, and the code phase(which also requires good design).   Many people who complain really are not and probably will never be ready to be a part of a design team, though some are or will be.   Having a good idea or design isn't enough though, you need talented artists, coders, and even composers(for the sounds/music).

Those with the ability do tend to have a bit of an ego as well, so trying to get a group like this coordinated and working together would probably be next to impossible.   I do think that a small group of 5-10 people MIGHT be able to get a good initial design put together, but getting the coders and such focused and listening to that design team without being paid money would be the real difficult part.

So, I'm ready to put my money where my mouth is when it comes to game design, but I don't have several millions of dollars to pay a team to get a product to market.   I will also admit that my focus tends to be more in the area of fantasy roleplaying when it comes to what I want to see in a game, but I spend most of my time playing games that make you think, so I have experience there too.

well seirously guys....Sim City 4 is probably the most City Planner-style game there is. Most of real life City Planning aspects are in here. What more can they put to make Sim City better? All teh mods and custom stuff have already made practically everything possible.

there's not much they can add anyways....they want beginners to play sim city too. IT's all about the money. They dun really care about "us".

I'm surprised with the fact that people aren't vandalizing EA in California, like you'd think that it would be headline news :"Group TP's EA..."

Marcszar- I know i'm jumping to conclusions but thats just the way I see it. The possibilities of SC4 were practically ENDLESS even without the source code but I can't see that ever happening with SCS.

I'm going to be getting SCS however to try it out... I can always take it back to the shops and say its 'broke' if I hate it. I think SCS will need a large community of BATters like on this forum to even live half as long as SC4 has.

I agree, this is totally a city life knock off, and that's a very bad thing.

Haha just as I suspected!! I knew they would fully screw us over - this was to be expected. This company is small insignificant and inexperienced. It is very much so aimed at kids - I know that no one here will buy this game as it isn't a real SimCity. SIMCITY SOCITIES WILL SOON BE SEWPT UNDER THE RUG AND COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN ABOUT - THIS ISN'T THE REAL SIMCITY 5. IT CAN'T BE INCLUDED AS A PROPER VOLUME IN THE SC SERIES.

Has anyone seen the screenshots? The buildings aren't even realistic!

And why is the traffic light floating??

They've eliminated the zoning, and it looks like they don't even have roads, streets, highways, or anything other than avenues for that matter.

I'll have to see if they tweak this or where it goes but so far, I really don't like it.

This is Tycoon City New York...We've played this game before and it sucked.

Well, on the bright side, all the work we've put into SC4 will not have been in vein! 2.gif

this has really been an up and down past couple of days.... I really don't know what to expect at this point....

Two points:

1. The article does not actually say that zoning has been eliminated. Just that it can be circumvented. Neither the simple-minded newbie nor the simcity veteran would really want to plop each building in a city of even 100,000 people. ( I hope I'm reading that right!)

2. Sim city too complex???? Only as much as video games in general have gotten more complex over time. I remember Atari. One button and a joy stick. Now look at the controllers..... and most new games utilizes as much of the new complexity as they can. Even other EA games such as Madden & NBALive are much more difficult to play than they used to be.

the first sim city had zoning

Sim city is the is based on zoning .....not social crap!

Social crap seems harder than zoning....!!!

just make sure...NO ONE BUY IT....so Tmills will go out of buisness.....

I'm going to assume that your not from America, but none theless. I don't think that we need to run Tmills out of Buisness, we just need to make them feel massive personal shame for ruining a famous game. End of Story

What the hell?

I've reserved my judgment, and looking at the preview, I see so many things missing?

Where's the curved roads? Where's the wide roads, etc.

It just sounds like a City Life knock-off. Curse you, EA. Making a game simpler, because the main market is full of stupid people, and wanting to milk them for their money. I liked the Sims, but hated the Sims 2, because it was boring.

Intelligence just doesn't count for anything anymore.

I'd be willing to pay for a de-bugged and re-coded SC4RH.  I'd rather just see some of the glaring problems (like the crashes to desktop) and ability for our community to monkey with the source code, and maybe have major modds like NAM, opera house fix, etc added into the game directly.  Graphical changes would be nice, but honestly, SC4RH is a damn good game.  I don't play any "button mashers" anymore, because I like to be smart.  I work my ass off in school, but enjoy thinking for myself.  Conformity already rules our lives and in this world, the mindless rule the intelligent, money is king, oil is queen, and ignorance is bliss.

Edit: ^ I agree with you, I think myself and most of the SC community would but a new version of SC4 if it was optimized for modern hardware, open source, and de-bugged.

Based on what has been cut so far I wouldn't be surprised if this game dosen't feature regions, highways, airports, rail, subway etc...

I am full of so many different emotions since I found out this news. First shock, than disappointment, then frustrated, then fuming. I am now boycotting EA and anyone associated with EA. How could Maxis depart and work on their piece of s*** called Spore? The Sims fair enough because it intertwines with SimCity but we don't need 10 bloody expansion packs for The Sims 2 while SimCity got only one. If Will Wright wanted to make the game more accessable for the ***** SimCity players, why not include a toned down version with the game so new players can pick up basic skills (or keep playing it forever) and then move on to the more complex realistic urban simulator.I expect Will Wright to make it his number one priority to give a press conference explaining this discrace, betrayal, backflip, whatever you want to call it. I have played every single version from when I first played the original SimCity on my old Amiga Commodore computer right up to SimCity 4 on my high spec. vista computer. This is a very, very dark day for the gaming world. Everyone is in mourning over this terrible loss. I hope another computer gaming company can pick up where SimCity 4 left off and give us a dream of a next generation realistic urban simulator. Thank you for your time.

P.S, I really needed to get that off my chest. SimCity has always been (and I mean HAS as there is nothing to look forward to) my all time favourite game to play. Out of every single other game ever invented in this world. 15.gif

I would like this to please motivate ALL of our current and past modders of SC4 to please keep SimCity 4 alive and keep it going the way we want it to move forward. You guys are all we have got and I thank you for everything you have done to make SimCity 4 the best game to play in the history of this world.

Will wright is making spore. If you talk about about that, I will destroy you. Spore just looks plain out best game ever made. That's the next simcity to me. This "Societies" is a slap on the knee.

Sorry but nobody was exactly asking for Spore. It looks like the movie Gattaca combined with the compost bin in someones backyard. Whatever happened to sticking with the "SIM" x games? Thats what we all love. We love designing our own cities. I would love to be a town planner designing new residental estates but I'm working towards a goal of being an architect, design a residental tower and live on the top floor in my penthouse. It might be off-topic but I feel the exact way about SimCity. It's been a 18 year relationship between us and Maxis/EA and now they just leave us stranded to fend for ourselves while they try to create a "My first SimCity" type of game? How pathetic!

I'm disgusted.. I really am. I litteraly almost passed out when I saw in my RSS Reader "Sim City 5 to be passed on to another developer" slashdot was luckily wrong about it being SC5.. although we've been waiting.. patiently and quietly for any news on SC5.. and this obviously is not what we wanted or were expecting. It's amazing really, I figured any month now we'll see some SC5 info.. and this is what I get? After four years of waiting we get this? We're one of the most passionate fan bases in gaming. We patiently for a sign of life of our franchise's next game.. and we're left in the cold. SC4 is great, and it's amazing how many unbelievable add-ons there are by this community.. but I myself was ready for SC5, I was really ready to drop $1200 on a new desktop really just for SC5. But now it's this? You know what's sad? People posting custom stuff on the Tmills or whatever the developer taking this forum.. it's like a look at what the series is about, knowing that it may not be like this ever again, and in a bad way.

Edited  ~zel~ This was not what I was expecting.

I also feel embarrassed, as I was one of the few people preaching civility and patience, and trying to get the community to wait for more information before getting up on their high horses..

Sigh...I don't feel angry, and I'm not horrified and disgusted.

I just feel depressed.

If we have reached a day where a game like SC is too complex for America, and Americans, we then, are truly dumb, and have lost. I really would love to know the European and Asian communities opinions on this, their education standards are higher than ours! I could possibly see this game being pushed on the legions of dim-witted, entertainment seeking, flash driven hordes of American youth, but does EA actually think this will fly in Western Europe, or Japan?? We are screwed.
