how many still use rails?

I noticed there aren't too many custom rail stations on the STEX, or maybe I'm searching wrong. There are a lot of GLR stations though. Are mayors leaving the GLR for internal city and the RR for suburbs and rural areas? Or using above ground or monorail?

I still use rail, its easier to place...

There are quite a few stations for regular rail, it just takes some searching (check ill_tonkso's stuff...)

I rarely use the conventional rail. I do use it for some of my industrial sectors (freight).

I use subways in most of my cities. Subway transit isn't as fast as GLR or monorail but it is easy to integrate it into the city.

I use rail, GLR, and EL-rail extensively. In high density city centers I use subway. As for monorail, I have the HSPR installed and its really neat for spanning entire regions.

Ill_Tonkso and frogface have done some really nice railroad stations. Check them out.

I use regular rail too. I actually don't like GLR. Too fussy to deal with for my taste.

I too use regular rail quite often, even in my downtowns (but no passenger stations). Cities just don't seem the same without them..

I use heavy rail mostly, because it takes too long to plop the GLR puzzle pieces. Plus there's that lovely crash that happens when you hover a puzzle piece over a station.

In my downtowns I use subway and el-rail, but heavy rail I use extensively everywhere.

I use rail and subway very much in my region

Solaria-Transitupdate5.jpg

You might need either the zoom feature out or your glasses on depending on your screen resolution as this is at 800x600 converted form a 1680x1050 standard screen shot

But if you follow the black you can see the surface rail network in Southern Solaria running through 2 large cities,  and various medium and small surrounding areas of the core. The heavy rail is used by both passengers and freight and is at 85% utilisation on average.

As for monorail, not so established as it only runs between IPC, and Rangitoto Town for now

Subway is very well built and utilised here even though it can't be seen as it acts intermeditary from the heavy long distance rail and bus system through out The Core

All mass transit systems are inter linked with one another and co-operate with each other including a very well used roading and highway network as well as the Ferries

And this is what the network has to service in Southern Solaria

I tend to copy the mass transit of Japanese cities in SC4. Japanese cities have a combination of all types of mass transit, especially trains.

I usually lay down the tracks first, before starting a city - as it provides both neighbour connections/jobs for the sims, and it's a lot easier (and IMHO, realistic) to build the city up around the tracks. If and when subways are placed, they are usually well connected to the train stations, and also used to fill in the spaces between the train lines. In a sense, the subways act as the 'roads', and the rails act as the 'avenues'.

Of course, using rails abutting I lots keeps a lot of the freight trucks off of the roads, but if you're city is well organized, the freight trucks shouldn't be going through R and C zones anyways.

Let us take a look.

Well Peg has a really nice Rural Station. Then we have Goober and Jason then there is I think Coego.GLR is a great idea but a tad touchy and seeing how I got a old system it drags my game down to a crawl.

I still use both the passenger rail and the sub/el/GLR. Since my main region I work on is based on Phila. USA it makes the most sense. I use the passenger rail to connect my suburban cities with my CBD downtown, which in some cases are 3 or 4 cities away from my downtown city. The sub/el/GLR connect my inner cities with the CBD downtown which are next to or 2 cities away from downtown. As my passenger rail has to pass through the inner cities to reach downtown, I might provide one station for passengers who dont want to use the sub/el/GLR because they feel they are better than the regular folk. I do have the HSRP installed yet I dont use it. It is a wonderful mod, but the lack of stations makes it lacking in my opinion. If however a downtown terminal that is HSR exclusive and an outlying station that is more than a converted monorail station is ever BATted I would probally use it then. I cant BAT, or else Id do it.

I use passenger rail extensively, both as inter-city and a commuter system. It's easy to place, and if you look for a bit, there are actually a ton of stations on the STEX. I would use the HSRP more too, but I don't like the aesthetics of it. I've seen some people running it on regular looking train tracks, which I would be all over if it ever got a general release. Rail is one of the primary commute options in most of my cities.

I wanna try the HSPR for connecting cities. I love trains, but who doesn't? We just got a nice part of the LTD done here in Denver, (Light Rail). It now runs from the very south end of Denver (Colorado, USA) into downtown. With expansion coming to the east and west. I was surprised, I really thought an extra lane on the HW would be better, but more people use the train than I thought.

I'm a little too far to make use of it and just don't go downtown that much. I will once the Rockies start playing, which starts monday 4.gif I'll be taking the train to Coors field in April. We have a guy at work who uses the bus and LTD to travel from the mountains to work. It takes about an hour and a half but saves him a ton of gas. Denver is doing a much better job on mass transit than we see daily and people are coping with a little extra time and inconvenience.

Anyway, I will eventually use the GLR, or at least try. I hate puzzle pieces, but that is far more realistic, aside from an EL.

I have found several nice stations. I like single track that fall along the rail so I can just place them next to adjoining road. I hate the Subway and Bus with a passion. Its too hard to find the stations and place everything. I know I know, buses should be #1 in my city.

I haven't done much with freight rail, I can never get industry to use it. Does anyone have any tips?

Yep, I still use rail, quite extensively actually.

This is a teaser shot of my latest atttempt at a region. Currently the region's population is at 120,000.

    hobartcbdareaum6.jpg

Most of the black lines are ground rail (some is elevated rail). You can't see it, but there's also quite a bit of subway trackage, including an underground loop which I've provided connections to using the NDEX transitions.

    Apologies for the low quality...

I use a lot of rail, actually, Rail is the primary long distance travel, only busses superseede rail in my regions. I Love the HSRP too, and i use a lot of subways/busses. Rail is primarly for Regional Movements and Freight transport

I mainly use rail and subway, but on occasion I'll use the monorail or the El-rail. Don't really like the GLR.

I installed the HSRP, its great except the lack of stations 15.gif It's great for connecting cities. Fortunately you can use any monorail stations and there are a few nice ones, and to be honest a HS train doesn't stop much. Great for connecting residential cities to industrial/commercial centers.
