Where do you normally buy your games?

I usually buy my games at CompUSA, but now every CompUSA by me is going out of business - guess I'll start using BestBuy or Microcenter.

So, I was wondering: Which stores you do usually use to buy your games at? If you usually buy at CompUSA, and the one by you is also going out of business, where are you going now?

Also, where did you buy Rush Hour? I bought it at BestBuy.

Anyway, just thought I'd ask.

I usually buy my games from Finnish department store-chain Anttila or Citymarket. And often I buy discount games from Tilt-shop or EB Games, Tilt belongs to media "giant" Bonnier and MTV3 and EB is one man shop.

I ordered my Rush Hour from CDON.com, which is swedish online-shop. Because of that, my RH copy has swedish manual and package, but it isn't a problem.

I usually buy them at Target or Best Buy, but I've bought a couple of DS games at Costco. Otherwise, it basically depends on where I am at that time.

I bought RH at Circuit City.

eww I hate compUSA, i'm glad they're closing half their stores (no, they're not going out of business)

reason's why I hate compUSA (and some other computer stores)

1) they have poor business practices, they advertise something but it's been out of stock for the past 2 weeks

2) they make you do mail in rebates (unlike best buy which defenestrated those 2 years ago)

3) it's a mexican company (lol, but not really)

4) poor selection

gamestop FTW!

Whenever a new game comes out I want, I generaly go to the local video game store for it. If I'm in Stamford, it's EB Games at the mall. If I'm in the Bronx, it's a local place on Broadway called Game and Comic Station. Games that have been out for a while I tend to order off the internet since the likelihood of finding them in a given store is less.

Let's go through some specifics here:

Simcity 2000: I have no Idea where it came from, my mom bought it. Things like amazon.com didn't exist back then, so I assume she picked it up at a store somewhere.

Simcity 3000: Ordered off the internet (not sure what site)

Simcity 3000 Unlimited: same

Simcity 4: Bought in CompUSA in Norwalk, Connecticut.

Rush Hour: I preordered a copy of it, but it took almost a week to come in the mail, and when after a few days I learned that that same CompUSA had it on the shelves, I got impatient and went and got it there. The copy that came in the mail now belongs to my cousin (The Terminator). Also note that this is the only thing I've ever preordered, video game or otherwise.

Working at Best Buy, and assuming that CompUSA is rather similar to Best Buy, I have answers to these...

1. Every place is like that. Head office makes the flyers/sales, the warehouse ships the product to us. If the warehouse doesn't ship us the right stuff, there's not a whole lot an individual store can do.

2. Those are done by the manufacturer, IIRC.

3. ....30.gif

4. Not much to comment on here. 3.gif

And as for me, I usually buy my games at (surprise!) Best Buy. 3.gif

Best Buy Canada offers both instant savings and mail in rebates. Sometimes there's just a mail in rebate, sometimes there's just the instant savings... sometimes, there's instant savings bundled with a mail in rebate.

xiziz- Pirating is quite illegal, and is not to be discussed on this site, regardless if you happen to buy the game later or not.

I buy most of my games from EB games and Gamestop. As for SC4 Rush Hour, I bought it at Fry's Electronics.

Erm, Best Buy in America didn't do away with them either.  For example, when I got a digital camera in January, my memory card had a twenty dollar mail-in rebate on it (which was part of the reason why got a 2 gig card instead of a 1 gig card 3.gif).  A mail in rebate is a discount between the consumer and the manufacturer, not the consumer and the retail outlet.  Therefore, unless the manufacturer agrees to pay the retail outlet full value plus an incentive, there's basically no value in the retail outlet giving you instant savings with them when you can get it with the manufacturer.  Coupons work just like that.  That's why coupons are A) a pain in the butt and B) always worth more to the retail outlet than they are to you, because the manufacturer has to give the retail outlet some sort of incentive to put up with the giant pain in the butt of honoring coupons.

Anyway, back on topic, I have gotten my games at CompUSA, and I know that people have bought them for me from all over the place.

Gamestop all the way.

But sometimes, if it is available on Steam, then I'll snag it from there.

Exactly.. if the price tags are the same as in Canada, over the price it will say "As Advertised" if it's on sale, or, less frequently, "On Sale". With the mail in rebates, it says just that... "Mail-In Rebate", with a subtraction from the original cost to what it would be with the rebate. They don't display them on a side bit beside the price tag, as is done with the instant savings.

Sorry for going off on this tangent, but getting the price tags out is one of my jobs at Best Buy, so it sorta iffs me when people get it wrong. 3.gif

I do realize that the rebates are with the manufacturer, but BestBuy's weekly circulars no longer feature the mail in rebate savings so they don't trick you with "low prices".

Woolworths. There is a name I have not heard in ages - there used to be a chain in the States, but I believe they are now defunct. I wonder if it is the same chain (Google time).

Back on topic:

I used to buy mine from a local gaming place whose name I have stricken from my mind.

The reason I don't buy from them? When I went in there to ask them if they had Rush Hour for Sim City (a few days after release), the guy looked at me like I started pulling live hamsters out of my mouth. Then he told me there was no such game.

I believe I bought the game at Walmart.com. I have also grabbed copies from Amazon.com and eBay and Half.com.

Until last year, there was literally no other place in town which sold computer games. None. Finally, Walmart opened here, but I have not bought any new games for a couple of years, so I have not used them yet. Nothing really seems to grab my eye as of yet.

All the Wooworth's in the US have been gone since 1997. However, some in the UK and elsewhere have remained. The company is still in operation in the US, running the Foot Locker chain of stores.

...As a kid, I remember buying Hot Wheels cars and such things at Wooworth's on Hope Street in Stamford. We also bought arts and crafts supplies there. I have no memories of seeing such, but it's possible they were carrying SNES, Sega Genises, Gameboy, and Gamegear games in there somewhere (those were the latest consoles at the time).

The place where it was is now a Bob's Discount Furniture (a chain local to Connecticut and southern New York).

You realize that FutureShop is owned by the same people who own Best Buy, have essentially the same policies, with the only major difference other than the logo and etc. being that FutureShop sales associates are much more pushy with PSP due to the fact that they make commission on it? 3.gif

I usually buy my games at either Best Buy, Circuit City, or online. Occasionally I'll go to Target or Wal-Mart. However, lately I've been avoiding Best Buy, because (at least in my area) their staff has become more incompetent. Also, they're usually very busy.

And if for some reason none of those stores carry the game I want, I go to Fry's Electronics. If you've never heard of them, they're pretty much a gigantic electronics store... It's like a Wal-Mart size with the products Best Buy carries.

Walmart.  They are the closest and their prices are usually the best.

Usually at Best Buy, but I'll sometimes buy online (I got SC4 off of Amazon). EB Games is also pretty good if you're looking for low prices, or a really old game that no one else carries anymore.
