First you download GMAX at www.discreet.com and then download BAT from www.simcity.com and then you install the plugin.  Open up BAT and register with GMAX (It will pop up and you have to recieve the e-mail).  If you have AOL the e-mail goes into your SPAM folder so you have to go in there to get it.  Then you open up your BAT and have fun!

I have also been battling to download gmax for about a week.  7.gif  I keep getting this...

While trying to retrieve the URL: http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax

The following error was encountered:

Unable to determine IP address from host name for
www.turbosquid.com

The dnsserver returned:

Server Failure: The name server was unable to process this query.

This means that:

The cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL.
Check if the address is correct.

HA - !!!! - I have the solution:

You have to delete all temporary files and you have to copy the gmax12.exe to c:\ (or your windows-drive)
the the installer works fine...

SOO stupid!!!

You should be able to extract the files to whatever part of the hard drive that you want.  I have my copy installed on drives D and E (and WINDOWS is installed on C drive).  Use the provided extracter and all should be fine.  And for those who can't register it, when you try to start gmax, the window that asks for the registration code has a link to the web page that you register on.  Don't bother asking for someone to hand out registration copies because everytime that a code is handed out to someone, the server will make a copy of that code and everyone that gmax will have a file somewhere in the download that tells it that the previously used code has already been used.  I tried it once (because I have downloaded the program 3 times) and gmax told me that the old code had been previously used and was no longer valid.  It isn't really possible to crack the registration code because it is 58 characters long and it is structured.  In other words, just register your copy.  If you can't register your copy, then email tcao@turbosquid.com and he will probably send you a copy of the registration form.  Fill it out and then he will get you a code.  (He's sent me a new registration code twice already).

I noticed that too from that site. I believe there is a charge for the program now. But there is an upgraded version of the Gmax, version 8 I think, available for a charge. I was just curious if that would still work with the Sim City game, and if so, is the program any better than the one that we got from Discreet some time ago? And is it any easier to use. And one more, I swear, how is the format different than the BAT tool if it is?

I'm just downloading the BAT and GMAX today, and I'm pretty apalled how badly-linked the main site is. Not only do you not realise you need an external download until you go to install the BAT, but the link is pretty well hidden, and there has been NO update since GMAX was made into a pay product... So without the help of ST, I'd have given up!

Okay folks,

I have been hanging over at Turbo Squid, The site that now offers Gmax. Remember Gmax is the program and the BAT is a plug-in for it.

Well, things do not look very promising for Gmax. Since Microsoft is getting ready to launch WinXP Vista upgrade, in a couple months, the powers that be are saying gmax will not function properly.

They do not seem to be interested in updates or fixes for gmax users at the moment, as they are in a wait and see mode now.

Thats not a surprise.

I just found out that gmax is used to mod levels for Dungeon Seige though. Now that is Cool!!

Date: 1/15/2006 5:13:22 PM Author: Scipio I still have the gmax installer if you want it....

I still have it also, Scipio. Just thought I would mention that the version offered is version it will stay for a bit longer and TS will continue to host the program for Downloading. Autodesk administrator has made comments about this issue over at TS forums.

Those still having problems installing Gmax from Turbo Squid and then, installing the BAT plug-in from the official SC4 site; TS has a forumngenre specifically for gmax issues, but they are not responsible for the BAT plug-in fom EA Games.

most likely it has something to do with your system configuration or running processes. I can DL Gmax and BAT(need both for modding SC4), to any winXP system.
B.A.T. = Building Architect Tool Isn't BAT just a render engine basically???
Any game designer/developers can create their own plug-ins for new game releases, that work with Gmax from AutoDesk. The BAT renders exactly what Simcity scenes are needed and specific zoom levels, enviroments, etc.

I just DL'ed Dungeon Seige Tool Kit and Seige Max, which is also a plug-in for Gmax. Made by microsoft or Mad Doc game design team.

Hello All!

I think that it would be handy so sum up what has been happening with the program Gmax and the possibilities to run BAT.

First of all, no panic! There is absolutely no problem to accuire Gmax, and it is still free!

What has then happened? Autodesk, the company who owns Gmax has cancelled their support for Gmax in the late 2005. The reason for this is believed to be that the gaming industry, who needs to pay Autodesk to have Gmax supporting their games, has lost interest in Gmax. No new games has got Gmax support in the last two years, and when the program brings no revenue, some person at Autodesk thougt that they should not pay for the maintenance/ downloads/ support of this program. You might think that this is silly and maybe I do it as well but the aim of this article is not to discuss this any further. It is like it is.

Well when Autodesk spread the news about cancerling Gmax there were quite some protests among the gaming/ modding community, and Autodesk finally decided to let www.turbosquid.com, an affiliate to Autodesk who also distributed Gmax before its officcial cancellation, still have Gmax on download on their site and give out registration keys.

But no-one knows how long turbosquid will continue to offer Gmax, so my five cents is that anyone interested in Gmax/ BAT should download the Gmax installer and save the installer on CD to have it the day when your computer crashes or you want to install it on a new system. You should also save your installation code. People have been reporting that old installation codes sometimes not are working, therefore I also recommend that You save the "installation code workaround" on your CD.

Well, how do You download Gmax? First, You need to register as a user at www.turbosquid.com . When you are registered, You can go to http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax to download the program. Gmax is kind of hard to find in the menus so this direct link is very handy. You can download the program, and if You want the help files, textures etc You can download them as well. To get Your registration key, go to http://www.turbosquid.com/Support/gmax

To download the installation code workaround, go here: http://www.fsalpha.com/gmax_tips/zip/+AutoDesk_GMax+zip

If You have any problems installing Gmax, there is a forum on Turbosquid where various installation issues are discussed.

Now when You have everything You need, do not forget to burn all the files on a CD, including your registration code. Also keep the CD in a safe place. A colleague of my mother had been smart enough to make CD backups on all her files, then her old dusty computer caught fire. She kept the backup CDs in a bookshelf mounted on the wall right over the computer and they were toasted just as the original data...

Please make any comments or suggestions on this text. Maybe it should be posted as an article on the main page of Simtropolis because this is a matter that concerns all batters in the community.

EDIT: PS. Sorry about the bad formatting.
