I think that could be said for the vast majority of Russia towns and smaller cities, Russia is becoming a very wealth polarised society, something that could have major problems for them.

    yep that's true...

the contrast could be stuggering, sometimes you wouldn't belive you are in same country...

but there is a hope that situation will improve, just like not longer then 5-6 years ago one may have said that Moscow was the ONLY booming place in Russia, 2-3 boom had spread to practically all major cities of country, novwadays most of secon and even 3 tire cities and towns are entering it.

But there are clearly depressed regiions, those that are on the loosing end of internal competition for resources, investment, skilled labour etc, etc... For far North West situation may improve in coming years with a huge (worth 100++ billion$) rearmarment programm for Russian navy that is set in motion - Fleet is about to get 6 to 10 aircarrier groups - that would boost places around Murmanst quite a lot...

Then you'll prolly hate to hear that Russia and China are real cozy together lately, to the point of having joint military exercises.......

I live in Moscow for 4 years, the main problem in this city is named, as said Silur, Yuri Luzhkov and his friend Tseretely. They don't have any kind of taste, they are destroying all the russian and soviet charm of the city, horrible tucky sculptures everywhere (Peter I monument), absurd buildings in the middle of avenues (Erevan Plaza Mall), this are just a few examples but even worse, corruption and a city goverment with the worst things of both systems (capitalism and communism) and a cheap populism.

Traffic is such a big problem because city goverment is just not doing nothing to improve public transport and roads. It is necesary to build underpasses at the main crosses, metro is permanently overcrowded (Madrid with 5 millions has overpassed Moscow - 12-15 millions - in kilometres of metro), buses also, the only alternative of buses are dangerous private microbuses (mashrutka). As in the rest of the world tram is coming back and there are big efforts to promote public transport here tramways are disappearing!!! and they don't make any kind of promotion to the public transport. City is dirty, main street, Tverskaya, looks like a third world avenue, full of publicity everywhere (as the entire city), old streetlamps and cheap sidewalks. Everybody knows here there's money enough, many people even say with PRIDE (!!! ???) "did you know this is the most expensive city in the world?".

I love Moscow, I've choosen to live here because I like it, this is the reason all this hurts me so much, Moskva City is not the worst thing in Moscow, but does Moscow really needs that?

Whenever I see massive areas of historically significant urban space destroyed for the sake of soulless office and residential blocks, I feel that we are destroying a part of who we are, as the human race/mankind. Sure, you can rebuild new out of bombed out places, or in the sake of progress, but one should always respect the urbanity, and build within the context of it all. This is nearly akin to desecration of things sacred, such as ancient graves, and places of worship. All for the sake of $$$, of course.

I hope we can expect a lot more from Moscow if it keeps going like this,

im so glad that a city of this size and status is finally getting some skyscrapers other than the giant commie towers lol. im eagerly awaiting the completion of Federation Tower. i think its one of the most beautiful buildings ever.

Interesting why can't they try to find a middle path? I mean, build new buildings but keep the old buildings?

And well Moscow, is Moscow. You must say it is one of the greatest cities in the world, like New York or London or Paris or Tokyo and etc. But well i am afraid that the life here can get more expensive and more straing. Like all Russians remember when some one importened is on MKAD and we like idiots must wait when they pass or the worst when Putin is on MKAD. And well the biggest problem is our police!

P.S. Who had the stupid idea to creat the statue of Peter the First on the ship? I HATE THAT!!! Who was the creater of this "great" monument?
