SimCity DS?

I felt this announcement was major enough to even have its own thread to get some feedback from the citizens of Simtropolis! If you look on the home page of Simtropolis, an article was posted discussing a Nintendo DS version of SimCity. EA announced it on the last day of February. Many might recall a version for the Gameboy Advance, though it didn't do so well. Even check the ratings on www.gamespot.com! I think that a professional platform like the XBOX360 or even the PLAYSTATION 3 have the graphic cards, processing muscles, and of course.. (due to the large number of plugins available from Simtropolis and Simcity.com) .....the great reasonable amount of memory to handle something as advanced as the SimCity franchise. I just wanted to get some reaction, so what does anybody think about this?

I'd like it for PSP, too. I don't have a DS 3.gif

Although, this may be a reason to get one. I can't imagine it would be that bad. No keyboard shortcuts, eye strain, and not much of a 3D engine seem to be the only problems I would see, which wouldn't really deter people.

hmm... looks like a version of SC3K,

so I don't think there would be any graphic problems,...

I can this new game becoming quite a nice alternative to the PC version, it is good to see that Maxis definitely are still working on the SimCity franchise. However, I personally will stick to the PC version, I prefer a larger screen and more powerful graphics.

I have SC2K on my pocketpc, and I must say while it is fun, the menu system will probably not be as good as the PC version because of the screen real estate.

Forget SimCity if no touch screen. SC2K for SNES is brutally hard to play.

Foolilo: Neither can I.  A summer release date isn't too bad, I suppose.

In fact, I really haven't played my DS for a while lately. Once Pokemon Diamond/Pearl comes out in April, that's all going to change. Even more so with Sim City. I think it will be very addicting, but if you can only have one city then it will get boring pretty fast once you have no more room for anything, whereas on PC version, of course you can have as many cities as you want.

People would be suprised on how far technology has already come, it may be possible to download things. A simcity game with no BAT's...that would be a selling problem. BATing is really a booming trend in the simcity universe, i mean, most things that people have in the game now are downloaded from the sites. The T.V. show of Pokemon sucks, but ya gotta love the games!

^ Yep. The storyline is pretty repetitive, and everybody started to catch on. Just about every other anime has the same fate, except for a few. Now the games, those are the meat and potatoes of the franchise.

Back on the subject matter, that would be pretty cool, but then the downside would be memory space on the cartridge. Remember SC 3000 on how you had to replace the individual building with the custom one? The DS version might be even more limited. But a few custom buildings are better than none at all. Even so, I will definitely buy it, no matter how much is omitted from the original.

...just bring on a new game for the PC. This is a knife in the back to hardcore simcity fans, as the DS version is more basic and "for kids and beginers".

I can't imagine playing it with two screens, seems confusing for a game of simcity's complexity. Keyboard and mouse are the way to go like beebs stated.

Has anyone gotten the game yet?  I'm debating whether I should get the Japanese version or wait - it seems that the tileset for the American game is the American set - I'm wondering if you can switch between the two, or if it's just the difference between the two versions.

Hardcore fans don't produce enough sales revenue to keep a franchise afloat.  The majority of sales for almost any game come from casual players or beginners.  I'm sure that a percentage of those are turned off from the PC version because of its complexity.  Before you say that 'SC4 isn't that complex!', remember that YOU are a hardcore fan, and intimately familiar with the game, so it makes sense to you.  Also keep in mind that fans will, eventually, stop playing a game for whatever reason.  If there are no new fans to take their place, for example, those that got hooked on a simpler DS version and moved on from there, then there won't be any money for ANY sequels, simple or otherwise.

Also, how is this a 'knife in the back'?  EA is paying to make the game, not you.  If you prefer to stick with the PC version, don't buy the DS version.  You've lost nothing.  However, someone may play the DS version, move on to the PC version, discover Simtropolis, and eventually BAT this wicked cool thing that is totally awesome, and then you get to download it.

Back on topic, I'd get the game if I already had a DS, but since I'm saving for a new car, student loans, new computers for a recording studio...  we'll just say it's not really a priority at the moment.

With SimCity Societies announced, this game looks more appealing now. Should be interesting to see how it works on the DS.

Well I don't have a DS so I'm not buying it... but it looks alright for those who want SimCity on the go.

Still, you can't mess with the PC games... although EA is doing their hardest to mess with them.

Hey, to anyone who has it - are there different tilesets - I know the Japanese screenshots show the Asian tileset while the American screenies show the Original/American set. I'm wondering if the Japanese landmarks made it over to these shores too.

well, my brother came home today with the game, i've been playing for it for about 3 hours but my battery on my DS just died so it's charging lol. anyways, the game is a blast, there's a bunch of little missions, and this advisor helps you out a lot! there's also much maxis humor, more than in sc4. i haven't found any llamas yet but i'm still looking. the game goes pretty fast, saving takes about 30 seconds which is also not too bad. the loading times are quick aswell. if you have a DS and like Simcity, you should try it out 4.gif

oh, the graphics are just like sc3000, with a few more buildings and goodies. it's easy to pick up and go 4.gif

Can you go into detail on what it has?

Is it basically sc3000? is there all the same zones, networks, and power plants? How about landmarks?

anyways, I dont have a DS but If I did I would get this.

Sure, There are the same zones, Low Residential, Medium, High, and then the same for Commercial and Industrial. There is also a Marina zone. You make zones by dragging with the stylus. The top menu, like I said, shows a SC3000 graphics of your city and the bottom has a sort of Classic Simcity look where you can create your zones, roads, and other things. There is a rewards menu and you get certain rewards when you achieve certain things like Libraries, Musuems, City Hall, etc. There are landmarks, but you have to unlock them, I don't know how that works yet, I'll have to play to learn a bit more. There are power plants, You get an Oil and Coal Power plant to start off, and the rest you have to unlock. There aren't really too many networks, There is rail and road, There seems like there are some that you have to unlock so maybe they are highways, I have yet to find out. You can only create one city at a time because of the saving on the DS. There is a menu when you first start the game, and you can choose to either play your city, make a new one, visit a museum showing which buildings you've unlocked so far, there is a mail room where you can contact other mayors, I don't get how that works yet though, and there is a 'Save the city' scenarios, There are 7 scenarios where you have to rebuild the city in a certain amount of time. I haven't had any disasters except for a fire in my city, but I'm guessing they are random, ranging from Aliens to King Kong. The Budget is super easy to manage so I don't think anyone will have a problem with that. There are city tiles like Simcity 4 and each tile has a different budget, 100,000, 20,000, etc. Basically this game is a mix of SC3000 and other earlier games.

EDIT: I read this post, and it seems like I am rambling, so if I am not clear about something, Please ask, sorry about that.
