Toronto is definately better than New York, everything revolves around New York, why not Toronto? Why not Canada? Always America (No Offense).

It's so cramped in New York, and New York's most famous buildings are stadiums, that's just sad, whilst Toronto has more serious businesses to attend to rather than watching a game of baseball or whatever.

Toronto is diversed, it has alot of wide open space, I wouldn't say it's the most multi-cultural city in the world, because Montreal is.

If it were Montreal vs. Toronto, I'd go with Montreal, because that's where I live 9.gif

New York New York New York New York New York New York New York

I would always say New York unless it dissappeared or something. Then I would not even post here, and if I did it would be to argue 'why can't we have London in this v.s.?'

Yeah, no question about it, New York is the financial hub of the world and the economic center of the western hemisphere. 4th largest in the world depending on who you ask, 4X Toronto's size. Of course, then you add things like crime...but Toronto has it too. I'm sorry Trononto, but New York wins by a long shot. Not much to compare.

@isd2 actually nyc has one of the lowest crime rates in the nation now (crime rate being crimes to people ratio)

Actually, Toronto probably is in more movies than New York - except that TO almost never plays itself.

Your dark epiphanies, your true lines and smoke

Your glistening rails and streetcars all aglow.

"Always the wind and the persistent snow

Gets into your eyes and your mouth and every fold of your coat"

Everybody hates you but they don't know what I know

It's Christmastime, Christmastime in Toronto...

Well, given how large and crowded a city New York is, it's impractical to close down streets and control traffic to film in Manhattan... and even in the outer boroughs, it becomes an expensive undertaking. Toronto is a popular city to film street scenes for movies in since it's a sizeable city and you can get that urban feel, but it's not so crowded as to make doing so a practicality problem.

Still, the original point is the city in which the stories are set, not where the scenes were filmed. By that regard, Los Angeles would probably be way on top (Hollywood being there and all).

hahah, you'd think we don't promote our Stadiums, but look at what's in almost every postcard of Toronto? The BIG SPANKIN' Skydome, takes up a good 1/5 of most pictures. If you mean serious business by the Canadian National Tower, well ho ho, Toronto has to be better than NYC 3.gif

1. ever heard of the empire state building? or the chrysler building? or the world trade center?

2. toronto has more serious business to attend to? really? i think ny has plenty of serious business...most likely more than toronto...i mean, there is manhattan where offices for hundreds of large corporations are located.

3. I still would have to contend that by having the UN and embassies, and such, ny is the most. culturally diverse city...you can walk down one block in ny and hear 15 different languages...and that's in the areas where tourists won't dare go.

and finally the reason everything revolvs around ny and not toronto is this...1 size...ny is much larger population wise, 2. history...ny has been around for 400 years while toronto has been around a long time, it doesn't come close to ny, 3. the reasons i stated above, 4. tourism, 5. movies, 6. the american dream, 7. broadway...i could go on and on...

Toronto is, generally speaking, more diverse than New York. Almost half the population of Toronto were born outside Canada. In addition, because Canada's philosophy is multiculturalism (as vs. American assimilation), that bit of hyperbole just might literally be true in Toronto.

Just to point something out: most of the people you hear speaking foreign tongues in New York are likely tourists or people there on business. People who live in New York speak mostly English and/or Spanish.

There are pockets of the city where other languages are common, but those are the only two that really prevail pretty much all over.

Not always a good thing! Too often it's an euphemism for letting them run amok and giving tax breaks, all of which comes at a cost to the average city-dweller. I'd much rather my city spend money improving parks and city services than give some multinational a tax break to move in - and the very fact they're enticed by that means they'll just as easily up and leave if another city gives them a better deal. We'd get too far off-topic if we went into the reasons why, but there's a reason tightly regulated economies like the Scandinavian countries have better quality of life than free-market corporatocratic ones like the United States.

It's also quite silly to just compare subway statistics. What about the streetcars? Shouldn't we include buses as well? "[city] vs. [city]" can mean so many things and there isn't really any objective way to say one is better than the other. New York obviously has a great deal more cultural and economic significance, but that doesn't necessarily make it a better place to live than in the shadow of what was for 30 years the world's tallest tower. Neither is big-city life for everyone, I'm sure some look at "New York or Toronto?" and answer "Thunder Bay" or "Providence".

and what fine institution of knowledge did you attend? New York is one of the most diverse cities in the world, much more diverse than toronto. Did you know that new york has a higher jewish population than the Tel Aviv metro (which, is in isreal, the only prodomenantly jewish country). New York happens to have this big open space too, don't know if you have heard of it, its called central park. Not to say its greener, its not, but, i bet you could fit the entire population of toronto in central park. New York is most certainly not about baseball, when i think of new york, i think of wall street, times square, buisness. More buisness goes on in NY than toronto, and thats a fact. New York only has two well-known stadiums, and im telling you that the meadowlands is not famous world wide or even country wide landmark. The only famous stadium in new york is yankees stadium, and they are tearing that peice of crap down. And i could say the same for toronto. Its only world famous landmark is an observation tower (although one cool observation tower 3.gif). New York, meanwhile, is the capitol of world renown landmarks. Times Square, Central Park, The Empire State Building, Ground Zero 15.gif, The Chrysler Building, Brookyln Bridge, Yankees Stadium, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island. Those are all landmarks that i knew before i could name one landmark in my own city, boston. Toronto is a gorgeous, wonderful city, but like every other city except for london and hong kong, it does not stack up to New York.

EDIT: Just to back up my diversity point:

Toronto is 57.2% white, where as New York is 45% white.

I love Toronto. New york has too many problems (conjestion, pollution, heritage buildings in the way of development)

Toronto has those too. But Toronto still has room to grow. And did anyone go in the underground malls? There huge and awesome!

+ I'm Canadian! 3.gif

We, stardust, are the oddest observers of self (a.k.a. the universe).

I'm just a group of atoms typing this.

What do I know?

From wikipedia:

Toronto is one of the world's most multicultural cities. In 2004, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) ranked Toronto second, behind Miami, Florida, in its list of the world's cities with the largest percentage of foreign-born population, but Toronto has the highest percentage of foreign population, according to the 2006 Canadian census. Miami's foreign born population is dominated by those of Cuban and Latin American descent, unlike Toronto whose foreign born population is not dominated by any one ethnic group.quote>

Thank you for being polite, understanding, non-stereotypical and downright un-homophobic. It's good to know that our society still produces such people.

I'd have to say New York. 8 million people beats Toronto, the Subway beats Toronto, the location beats Toronto ... sorry. Hell, New York has the world's largest man made object. Nobody else can top that.

Second largest, actually. The Great Wall of China is bigger than Fresh Kills Landfill.

And, well, we may have the second largest manmade object, but it's just a huge pile of trash. Where all of the city's trash went for many years before it was closed. Not something to brag about, really.

Although it is a testament to the size of New York...

No, I don't think so. According to Wikipedia, the landfill has a greater volume.

And they seem to have a legit citation, too. Well, my source was a trivia book published in 1994, so I guess it was out of date. 31.gif
