New York far and away, above any city in the world. The thing about New york is that it's not just manhattan island, Northeast Jersey and Southwest Connecticut, also southern NY are all part of the metro-area.

I would have to go with Toronto. Not because im canadian, but because toronto isn't all congested everywhere, and on the 401, driving in from the east, there's a lot of hill etc. that make living there nice. Everything is spread out.

Only a Torontonian would offer up this comparison 21.gif It really doesn't make any sense. New York isn't really an American city it's a global city in a league with very few others. In my opinion, comparing it to Toronto and Toronto to it is silly.

Honestly I don't know why Toronto has this New York fixation. They should just be content with being Canada's most important city and a unique world-class city in its own right.

Meh. There's just no contest here. New York is a world class city, one of the "big five" (the "big five" of course being New York, London, Paris, Rome, and Tokyo). Toronto is not. You're attempting to compare an A class city with a B class one. It's not a fair fight here.

Toronto does have some things over New York, such as being the most diverse city in the world, but then again New York is also extremely diverse so in that aspect it's a numbers game. Toronto is usually ranked as being a better place to live in than New York as well. But in terms of international importance there's no contest. As others have already said it's not a fair comparison. I'll overcome my national biases and say New York. As a side note I think Toronto's got a lot of untapped potential. I do hope the waterfront revitalisation works out good and that some of the ambitious plans don't get stymied, like what happened with the Expo bid. Then maybe in the future a comparison like this won't seem so ridiculous.

Although I do agree with these comments of Toronto and New York City falling into different categories, I do have to rebuttal.

Look beyond the classification of these cities. Toronto is a minor (2nd) class global city and New York City is a major (1st) class global city as stated above by others.

Look at things affecting city life/culture etc. For example, Toronto has the Skydome (now Rogers Centre) and the Air Canada centre. New York City has Madison Square Gardens and Yankee stadium. Compare things like these and also geographical features like Foolilo stated. Things like these.

Based on things like these, I'd have to go with Toronto. Its a inland waterfront city (rare) with a more modernized skyline than New York. It is the world's most multicultural city and is known just as well as New York City for tourism in the International Community. New York City was very modern 'back in the day', but Toronto has since overtaken this. The internationally recognized CN Tower is a major landmark that makes the city unique and has been growing at a healthy pace over the years with no signs of stopping (the suburb cities are growing too fast).

Honestly, this is very tough to compare, which makes this a great VS. thread. Having been to both New York City and Toronto, its even more difficult for me!

Im sorry to say this but NYC is superior to all cities, PLEASE NOBODY TAKE THIS THE WRONG WAY, but every time people compare, most of the times, a city is compared to NYC,  can smeone answer me why this is?? So comparing cities is completely pointless if you are going to compare everything with the same city.  That just shows that NYC is superior, but every city has its own special uniquness and qualities that not other cities have!

Just because people are always comparing to something doesn't mean it must be the best. It could also be negative, in the "well, at least we aren't New York" sense as well as "we're just as good as New York". And of course, inevitably that kind of statement will invite a flood of people touting the merits of London, Tokyo and Paris which are generally considered the other "premier league" cities.

Really? I had no idea the CN tower was growing! (I know what you meant, but the grammar said otherwise and I couldn't help myself...)

New York is still very much a modern city. As far as arenas go, there is also Mets Stadium (no idea what it's called) and the Olympic comples was I think supposed to be the home of a sport team after the 2012 Olympics.  The NY subway is one of the largest Subway systems in the world, and I believe the most used. NY doesn't have an antenna like the CN tower, but with tall buildings like the Empire State building and formerly the WTC (plus many more) for it's antenna needs, it isn't worth the space.

Lastly, show me a place in Toronto that has the same amount of jumbotrons and high tech electrified signage.

Yes, that would be fair, both cities are lake cities, both have similar populations, and a similar amount of suburbs.

I don't even think LA can compare with New York.  In fact, I would even say that there is no other city in the Western Hemisphere that rivals it in importance, culture, and power.

I agree with that.  My natural response would be Toronto, as I'm a resident, but New York is in a class of its own.

i wouldnt say that toronto is the worlds most diverse city as some here have stated or even as diverse as new york, the whole identity of new york throughout its history has been shaped by the arrival of different immigrant groups which have all left a mark on the face of the city (dutch, british, german, black, irish, italian, jewish, chinese, puerto rican, etc.) in my mind new york is by far the worlds most diverse city.

as stated by someone before, only a torontonian can come up with a thread like this

This is an impossible comparison! I've been to both cities many times and live in New York so I'd have to go with New York. Toronto is a very nice city also though. Simply impossible. Its comparing candy and wine!

Well, it's the largest on several counts. The NYC subway has the most miles of track, the most lines, the most cars in its active fleet, and is the only subway in the world that runs 24/7. However it's not the most used. Moscow, of all places, has that honor.

No It is Tokyo the most used in the world

NY is not so used for it size
Comparison :   annual average passengers per station

Toronto
267.8 million (2005)
68 stations
3,938,200 pax/station

New York
1,449 million (2006)
468 stations
3,096,000 pax/station

and for international comparaison

Paris
1,336 million (2004)
297 stations
4,498,000 pax/station

London
976 million (2006)
274 stations
3,562,000 pax/sta

As I can see with thats.
Toronto subway is busier than New York subway, Hong Kong MRT should be the busiest subway per station with 16,189,000 pax/station

In this VS Toronto win. 4.gif

NEW YORK!!!!!! There's no need to get technical about this. My opinion is New York! I love NYC, I just visited a while ago and I've been wanting to go back ever since. I think NYC is the best city in the world, and this has nothing to do with countries because if NYC was in any other country in the world, it would still be my favorite city. I may live there some day, or I'll just go back and forth from Miami/Ft.Lauderdale to NYC constantly. NYC all the way!!!

Plus, NYC is not only an awesome city, but has to be the strongest city in the world considering all that the city has been through! It's history only makes the city even better!

I Love NY!

Wrong

Train in London is about 730 million passengers

and Tube is about 980 million passengers

DLR : 50 million passengers

Tramlink : 30 million passengers

but It is not wrong Tube is less than a half of all transit commuters of London

Bus :  about 1,700 million passengers .)

Yes

Toronto has more people per station because it has less stations than New York

But I  never said that Toronto subway is better than N.Y subway 4.gif

There cannot be a fair comparison as both cities are extremely different. New York has culture and a distinct building style with noticeable landmarks (more people know of the statue of liberty than the cn tower, sorry.) Toronto, although it may be Canada's largest city, is just another mass produced North American city with really not much uniqueness to it.....

I'm going to NY tomorrow, can't wait. I don't think I really would be crazy about going to Toronto. Doesn't seem exciting or very interesting (except CN Tower).

I don't think I'd live in NY because of the lack of mountains 8.gif

There's a recent book (mostly about New York) by Kate Ascher called The Works: Anatomy of a City. One thing that's in it is a comparison of the world's largest subway systems.

-New York has the most miles of track, most lines, most cars in the active fleet, and most annual hours of service (24/7/365).

-London has the most miles of lines (i.e. not counting multiple track miles more than once)

-Moscow has the most passengers per day.

The above three items are hard, solid, irrefutable facts and if you disagree, then, well, you're wrong.

    -------------

Besides, passengers per station is a poor measurement to use since it isn't fair for comparing large systems (like New York) to small ones (like Toronto). If I set up a two station shuttle line somewhere and have 10 million people take it one way or the other each day, do I really deserve the title of world's busiest subway? I'd think not.

And Tonks, this thread is not about London, and we've had that argument before. So please drop it.

New york and Toronto are both great, but in terms of living I would rather live in Torono, New York is only buildings theres no open space, there is central park but that is nothing compared to the space Toronto has, its so crampted in New York, in terms of land, Toronto is bigger, and thats what I like, and I really would rather live in a house, not a building, so i like Toronot in that sence, but it depends on what you like. I have been to both cities so i'm not completly bias.

I'd say an underground with one line and 10M passengers a day is far more busy than an underground with 20M passengers a day on 20 lines. But why does it have to be about the biggest always? The question was which is the better? Not that I'm that familiar with Toronto and New York, but aspects like a business friendly environment, laws, education, etc. do matter! And it's not too easy to find the value of all that. As for a business friendly environment, I recently saw that NYC was losing to London and Hong Kong because legislation in those locations allow more than the American do - this included less control from their SEC equivalents regarding transactions, and not so though immigration laws for new employees. Taking this into account, which city wins?
