I've been to Canada only twice in British Coulmbia. I would say my favourite canadian city is Victoria, B.C. The Parliament Buildings, the Empress Hotel, the Harbour area, and the british style buildings, is Victoria, B.C. on the list?

Jr America, perhaps, but without the extremes. Canadian cities, unlike their American counterparts, weren't hollowed out by racial strife and urban renewal. Downtown, with the possible exception of Winnipeg, not only survived but thrived. This has meant that since the 1960s Canadian and American urban experience split sharply and this splith as continued to have ramifications to this day.

Oh and urbandog, if you're looking to describe Vancouver in terms of American cities it's not LA you should be looking to it's Seattle!quote>

Indeed... American cities are some of the most segregated and ghettoized cities in the world. Canada, on the other hand, does not have a single area that qualifies as a ghetto in ANY of its cities.

Comparing Ottawa to Washington D.C. is a good example. Not far from the government centers in Washington, you quickly run into poor neighborhoods populated almost exclusively by African-Americans, while outside the city core you run into large, sprawling suburbs populated by middle-and-upper-class white people.

In Ottawa, on the other hand, Parliament Hill is minutes away from the Byward Market and Lowertown, which is a very diverse neighborhood, with a wide range of cultures and economic classes mingling and interacting. It's a very different sort of development.

And to answer the original question, my favourites are:

Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Victoria.

I'm curious as to why so many people like London, though. It's always struck me like it's trying to hard to be a big city, and not really ever getting there. Add in the incredibly old and conservative population and... well, there are far nicer smaller cities in Ontario. See Peterborough, Guelph and Kingston, for example.

Ouch this is hard. I will vote the worstest one is

Hamilton as it has alot of dirty industry and it's pretty impossiable to navigate.

And i haven't been much in canada but Toronto is my vote. Although, it's subway system only covers downtown and some of scarbrough that kind of pisses me off.

In conclusion, voting on the best canadian city is quite hard since there's not alot of good ones.

Saint John is by far one of the most beautiful cities in Canada

I don't why you think there are no ghettos in canada, the south end here in saint john is pretty bad and rifle range, while undergoing some renewal is still a place where you want to lock your doors while driving through.

I agree, there are no ghettos in Canada. There are definitely slums, but no ghettos.

I'm incredibly biased, so I would say Calgary. There are some dysfunctional social issues here, but it's also pretty livable considering the large amount of green space and amazingly low pollution.

Toronto is nice, way more multicultural than Calgary (their bubble tea is so much better than ours) and there are more things to do, since it's just a bigger city.

Ottawa is nice architecture-wise, but one thing I don't like about it is that unlike many Canadian cities, the outlying suburbs are completely disconnected from the city, so you can't really go anywhere else except by car.

I knew edmonton_stinks would say Calgary; because it is true Edmonton does stink!! It is just 2 million people opinion!! But only 700,000 thinks Calgary stinks!! So in this battle I would say Calgary wins!!

I have been only to Toronto as a little kid so I wouldn't know from experience.

But I can make a few assumptions, right? 9.gif

Toronto: The NYC/Chicago of Canada, it is huge, urban, big city

Vancouver: One of the most scenic cities in the world. Hip, cool, outdoorsy, "green"

Montreal: Like a bizarro snowy New Orleans complete with the urban decay and crime, but also fun and unique

Calgary/Edmonton/Halifax/etc: They look like average North American cities, but are nicer than their south of the border counterparts. Have great downtowns and transit.

Canadian cities are much different than US cities-crime rates are usually lower but with exceptions, healthcare, civics are all different. Plus, Canadian cities, like aforementioned, have slums but not ghettos. Ghettos aren't necessarily bad, crime-ridden areas, they are just victims of segregation. Toronto, being the biggest city in Canada, is in a sense the most important city (or so it is treated like it) Yellowknife, Whitehorse, Halifax, Guelph, and Iqaliut are all nice small cities with decent scenery and landmarks. I can't make a fair judgment here, I've only ever been to Thunder Bay and it was the outskirts I went to, a slum kind of area. However, I've seen pictures, and from that I think Halifax or Yellowknife would be good places to live.

Hamilton for the win.

Toronto-Montreal-Ottawa-Calgary-Vancouver. They all have this huge ego complex. Edmonton sucks bawls (just spent a few nights there on the streets, worse city to live on the streets in).

Hamilton though. Hamilton has this "I don't give a ***** what you think. I work, I sleep." Hamilton is down to earth, simple, and real. It was designed to be functional, not pretty, not sleek.

Coming from Toronto, it certainly is a beautiful city, but urban sprawl has taken its toll. But it really is a wonderful hegemony of cultures, with a great deal of cohesion between everyone. And the varied districts are all very beautiful as well. Scarborough by the cliffs is really nice, the view from the islands and the drastic change is also really cool. Downtown was planned out really well, and theres nothing in the world like standing at the top of the CN tower, looking out over the lake and feeling the wind. Its an awesome feeling. But of all of Canada's cities, I was really taken by Ottawa and Saskatoon. I known Sask isn't up there, but it really is a beautiful city, there's so a many bridges. Its really really unexpected. And Ottawa's a garden city really, its not too dense, but its a really wealthy and beautiful place, it certainly deserves to be the Capitol. And Iqaluit is awesome!!

And apparently Iqaluit has the only plastic tree for hundreds of kilometers and people come from miles around to come and gawk at the tree. Saw that on a Visit Nunavut commercial. Where its sunny forever!

I am in Brampton, ON but I would say Vancouver is one of the best and the most beautiful cities in the world. The surrounding areas are just as beautiful. I would say next would be Toronto because it is the largest and most diverse city in Canada. The Greater Toronto Area is very unique; it has everything from suburbs in the north and west to major economic cores such as Downtown Toronto Area, Yonge St. at 401, Mississauga Town Centre, and Scarborough/Markham area. GTA offers everything a major city needs, the skyline to nightclubs to beaches (not many of them are very clean but some offer very picturesque views). Lastly Montreal would be the third best. Montreal has that French touch. It has one of the best nightlives offered anywhere. Then again its my opinion, you might agree or disagree.

1. Vancouver - It's a major world city, has alot of culture, the ocean and mountains. B.C. is the nicest part of Canada by far. Downfalls Hastings and Traffic.

2. Edmonton - for a city of 1 million it host all events any larger city would. Great in summer with lots to do and the River Valley is one of a kind. Rockies are only 3 hours away. Downfalls are the rapidly rising cost of living.

3. Victoria - Like Vancouver the natural beauty of the area is some of the best on earth. It has a life and culture all of its own. Best place in Canada for less then a half million.

4. Calgary - Just a note - Being from Edmonton I am born to hate Calgary. But it is a good city. Very simular to Edmonton and if one resident claims an advantage over the other they can quickly come back with one of its own jems.

5. Kelowna (Okanogan) - Another great smaller city. The best weather in Canada and tons to do in the summer. Lots of lakes and beaches with weather usualy in the 30's C. Anyone familuar with the Okanogan will know Vernon. I like Vernon alot more then Kelowna because its not so busy.
