The Ruhr Area, also called simply Ruhr, (German Ruhrgebiet, colloquial Ruhrpott or Kohlenpott) is an urban area in Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, consisting of a number of large formerly industrial cities bordered by the rivers Ruhr to the south, Rhine to the west, and Lippe to the north. Southwest it borders the Bergisch land. The area, with some 5.3 million people, is considered part of the larger Rhine-Ruhr metropolian-Area of more than 12 million people. (including Düsseldorf, Köln, Bonn etc wich are not included in this CJ)

Going from west to east, the area includes the city boroughs of Duisburg, Oberhausen, Bottrop, Mülheim a/d Ruhr, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Bochum, Herne, Hamm, Hagen, and Dortmund as well as parts of the more "rural" districts Wesel, Recklinghausen, Unna and Ennepe-Ruhr. These districts have grown into a large complex forming an industrial landscape of unique size, inhabited by some 5.3 million people, the fourth largest urban area in Europe after Moscow, Greater London and Paris.

The Sauerland is a rural, hilly area spreading across most of the east of Nordrhein-Westfalen, heavily forested and sparsely inhabited. It has been chosen as the first place in Germany where the Wisent or European bison will be reintroduced mainly because of its large forests, and to help boost the tourism industry by attracting visitors to the region. In the winter tourist come for wintersports to Sauerland. With ski-carrousels in the towns as Winterberg, Willingen, Alt- und Neuastenberg and Bödefeld.

Sauerland in the winter, full of snow and ice!

In the west the hills continue into the Bergische Land, to the south into the Siegerland, and in the north-east to the Teuroburg Forest. The major rivers of the Sauerland are the Ruhr and the Lenne. Several smaller rivers were converted into artificial lakes by dams to store water for the nearby Ruhr Area (Ruhr-gebiet). The biggest of these lakes are those of the Möhne and Bigge.

In summertime, beautiful green hills.. It's nickname is "the land of 1000 hills

The highest elevation of the Sauerland is the Langenberg (843m) near Olsberg Much better known, because of its weather observation station, is the Kahler Asten (842m) near Winterberg. Both belong to the mountain range called the Rothaargebirge.

Another Winter-shot of the hills and mountains in Sauerland..

I had some PC-problems so I lost all of my old Simcity Regions such as "New York City", "Paris", "Menallorca".

But now, it's time for a whole new City-Journal.. I've reinstalled SimCity4 and all of it's custom plugins in total. So I've got a smooth system now to run on. Back-Ups will be made every time I played the game and made adjustments (I've learned from mistakes in the past to forget this reguarly)

So, I'm back again here.. And kicking of with a brand new start!! I hope I will get the same support as with my other CityJournals.. It's up to you!!

Cheers,

E

Ho Cool!!! I hope to see how you will keep this region with your unique touch! Sorry... you lost all your files? :-( I'm sure you'll do something amazing again here with your new CJ.

Take care,

Mr. Beer

EJC, you impress me again with your great journals!

I live about one hour from the Ruhr-area. I love Köln! Nice place to be, and the church is so impressive! But it isn't really das Ruhrgebiet.I go sometimes to Duisburg.Very industrial. Nordrhein-Westfalen is the biggest trade partner of the Netherlands, because of the the Rhine river. Ít's also the eastern-neighbour of my province, Limburg. I frequently go to Aachen and Herzogenrath, because of the lower taxes, but now, that is over!

Well EJC, this is going to be a great CJ

You can really do this, as I see in your Paris CJ.

Good luck!

    E.J.C REPLIES TO YOU

    Author Icon

Mr. Beer: Yes, I've lost all of my files. But I think it's part a good thing. I had so many plugins, and so many I didn't use in quiete a time.. So, maybe it was good to start all over again. Only, a lot of Japanese BATs are not to find anymore. But; I'm really determined again with this region, so I'm gonna go for it!!

    Author Icon

abcd: It's good to see some people here that are from the area. When you have any comments, suggestions; please, do not hesitate and tell it to me. It's cool to see people thinking with me when I'm building the region

    Author Icon

jacqulina: It's good to see you back again in this CJ. WIth thanx to Admin "skigeek" I recovered my old login-name, together with the 2006-trixie!!

    Author Icon

natuurzoon; One of the reasons I chose this region is because of the large diversity of it. As you said; with polluting Industries along the Rhein and Ruhr.. Commerce in Essen and Dortmund and Nature all around, and especially in Sauerland..

    Author Icon

feliwi: People who know me from my previous CityJournals know I am a slow builder. 1st stage will be all of planning out the landscape and infrastructure. Then, when progress is been made I will start zoning off some bits of the region. Final product will be a region that is filled up with mountains, rivers, cities, forests, farming and everything you could think of....

    Author Icon

Voulpiotis: Nice to see you here and giving me some support! great!

    Author Icon

Uumke: Aaaaah... Köln... That was my first idea; to do the cities of "Duisburg, Düsseldorf and Köln". The theme would be the "Rhein-river".. But now, I've chosen for the river "Ruhr". I will follow this river from the "Rhein" in the west, all the way to the east, crossing Duisburg, Mülheim, Essen, Holzwickede, Arnsberg, Meschede, Bestwig and.. Coming out on wintersport-heaven; Winterberg!

    Author Icon

mike_oxlong: hey! nice to see you back here.. As for the other CJ's.. Maybe I will post sometime all screenshots I had allready made. (you know I worked with a 2month gap between reallife and posting on Simtropolis..) Those screenshots have been saved, so maybe I have some for in the future to end all those CJ's in style...

With the next update, I will have a shot of the region landscaped so far...

    Cool! Ruhrgebiet!!!

I lived in Schwäbisch Hall for two years (east of Stuttgart), though I was in the Automesse in Essen once, remember driving into Essen from the south. I thought from pictures and the fact that the Ruhrgebiet is MASSIVE, and it is like the Industrial Center of Europe, that it would be very dirty and lots of industry along the Autobahn. Actually though I didn't see much of it, and it was really green and nice!

Anyhow, I thought Düsseldorf and Wuppertal was part of Ruhrgebiet, and I thought the total area had about 11 million inhabitants being one of the biggest industrial areas in the world?!

EDIT: oops, stupid me. Didn't quite read through. 9.gif

I can't wait to see how everything is going to look, you have a lot of work ahead, so viel glück! 2.gif

    take care,

EJC, a new region again?? it seems that you can't finish a region... to bad, because i really liked (still like) your Paris region..

But, i'm also very interested in how you're going to do the Ruhr-Area!

jacqulina: Indeed.. This is much better with my trixie!! ;-)

    Author Icon

ExiL3: The Ruhrgebiet is quite green though.. It's just where you are! In the west the most dirty industry concentrates. Near Duisburg (and south along the Rhine to Düsseldorf), Oberhausen and Bottrop.. In Bochum you'll find the carfactory of "Opel" and in Dortmund you'll find a inner-harbour with industries. As said; I'm develloping the "Ruhr-Area" and not the "Rhine-Ruhr-Area"... That will make the difference between 5 and 11 mil. people!

    Author Icon

tommiej: Well, I know.. It's a shame that I couldn't finish Paris Region. I did see it as my masterpiece and was 100% dedicated to it.. Unfortunatelly, back when I first installed SC4 it was.. I think? 2004 orso?? In that time I had no clue about plugins and stuff.. So, the game was really a mess as I played and installed more & more plugins. They were constantly conflicting with eachother and that's 1 of the reasons it was so hard for me to finish a region.. No mather how many back-ups I made, those plugins kept conflicting

    Author Icon

copecopecopecope: To finish my story from above.. Now, I have a completely clean start with SC4 (as well my total PC) And I've been searching and downloading the Modds and Bats for the past few weeks to come a bit on my old level. 1 number I can remember was that I had sometime 6.5GB on plugins on my old SC4.. (taking 15minutes or more to load into a city from windows) Now, I 'm struggling to get 1.5GB.. and the system is running more and more smoothly.

So, with all this given.. As said; it's time for a clean new start. And, because I'm known with this area it will be possible to maintain a high building speed. In comparison to Paris..

To end this update, I will give you the part of the region I'm now working on. Remember, all of "bergisch land" and "sauerland" haven't been terraformed yet!! I will be expanding the config.bmp everytime I will play and extend the region.....

    totalsatellite1no7.jpg

Allready visible some highways I've layed out..

    totalsatellite1textcm0.jpg

And a version with city-names in it, for easier regognision!

That's all for now, stay tuned!!

Hey EJC, it's cool to see you're back! I think when it comes to recreating real-world regions in a CJ, you are one of the, if not THE best CJer here.

And now you even picked a region I'm rather familar with! I hope you'll be careful with Castrop-Rauxel, or I'll have to send my girlfriend to your door to punish you... 3.gif She's from C-R. 2.gif

Nah, I'm sure you'll do a superb job, as always. 4.gif

I wonder what has happened to my first post here ... mysteriously disappeared ... 30.gif

This will be again an interest CJ to follow. Especially for me as a railway fan - there are quite some in this area even though some nice one in the rural areas have been already quite closed.

    Take care!
