Hi.
I have an idea.
Let everyone place here coat of arms of your city and a short description of it.
Let's get to know their history together.

The present coat of arms was broadcast to my city at 14 March 1938 year. It was a result of competition won by the students of Jagiellonian University. On the shield we have a connected heraldic signs of the Silesian Piast duke's family  (the golden half-eagle) and Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem (the half cross with double shoulders placed suitably on blue and black background.

Here's mine

hgsbyvs.jpg

The three gulls are there becuase seagulls are quite common here.

the original COA had a few barrels with herring in it , to symbolixe what this town was originally founded for, allthough fishing herring is no longer possible arround here because of the overfishing it went bye  bye arround the early 1900's  Haugesund( in Norway) was founded 1854

Today the town mainly survives on the offshore business, currently  a few oil rigs are at the docks for repair and other maintenance tasks...

Well, since this thread doesn't have to do with architecture... nor does it have to do with urbanism since coat of arms can be made before the place ever becomes a city... and since it doesn't exactly involve planning, I decided to move this to the Off-topic forum.

Related to this topic itself, I'll have to get Houston's coat of arms in my next post here. 2.gif

It seems that we don't have one.  Here's the logo used on the website:

Coat of Arms?  Not sure where the nearest one is.  Let's go with this:

maryland-flag.jpg

It's the Maryland state flag, which is based on the family coat of arms of some local colonial guy.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

San Antonio de Bexar was once the seat of the Spanish colonial governor in Texas, so many of the early official buildings and authorities boasted the Imperial coat of arms of the Hapsburgs.  Of course, our Loyal Outpost of the Empire was really just a few fortified dwellings and Catholic missions beseiged by hostile American natives, and I doubt anyone in the Hofburg or the Escorial could find us on a map of their dynastic realm.

The current city seal for San Antonio was carved in oak by Johannes Scholze, formerly a native of Dresden, Germany, and presented in 1925.

    The original wood city seal

I wonder if the decorative curves and swirls were inspired by Dresden's heavily frothy brand of baroque decoration.  As a wood sculpture, it was initially colorless, though many subsequent artists and sculptors interpret their own colors and decoration, as can be seen in the later giant crest that replaced the older wooden seal over the City Council chambers.

The city seal over City Council

Within the heraldic shield are various Texas Lone Star emblems, representing the State of Texas, with a scales of justice at the center.  Crowning the shield is a representation of the facade of the Alamo, San Antonio's landmark shrine to Texas's storied battle for liberty and independance from Mexico.  The motto at the bottom is "Cradle of Liberty," another reference to the Alamo's importance in Texas history.

Of course, few citizens see the seal in all its gilded glory hanging in the lofty and grandiose City Council chambers.  Instead, we get the cold stamp of the Bureau of Bureaucracy affixed to all our city public service bills:

The Stamp of the Bureau of Bureaucracy

    Ottawa, ON, Canada:

The flag, with the modern logo on it:

    Ottawa_flag.png

It's an O and the white spiky things represent the parliament buildings.... wrapped into an O shape.

As for the crest/shield... I don't really know. Never seen it. All the letterheads and envelopes and everything else always feature the O on the flag.

The London County Council had a coat of arms before it was abolished,

    Image:Londoncountycouncil.jpg

The only city not very far away from me that seems to still have a coat of arms is Portsmouth,

    My town's coat of arms:

    Odc_crest_of_arms.jpg

I don't really know any of the background to the coat of arms, except that 'Oigh Maigh' is the Ancient Irish name for the town (kinda obvious, really).

Edit: @JanYpe: Well, the Irish is 'An Ómaigh', so it's not Irish anyway. 2.gif

Edit:Edit: Actually (after a bit of research), it is the Ancient Irish name for the town, and not Latin. Sorry, my mistake. 18.gif

That would make it the weirdest Latin I've ever seen. Are you sure it isn't Irish or something?

    Tampere coats of arms

This is Tampere city's coats of arms. It's not so decorative but moreover, it fulfills the rules of heraldry. It has a bit of soviet look, doesn't it? :P

Anyway, the hammer on the left is a symbol for the industry, as Tampere is an old industrial city. The crosswise waving bar stands for the Tammerkoski rapids that flow trough the city and the staff of Mercury is a symbol for the trade and business in the city. The red and gold colours come from the Pirkanmaa region's coats of arms.
