Thank you for coming to visit Borden!

This is actually my first City Journal, and I think its really long overdue.  If you have any questions about anything feel free to ask me!  If you're wondering, "What building is that?", definitely feel free to ask me!  But don't just leave a post that only says 'What's that building with the pickle on top?".  At least leave a comment!  :-)  This is a fiction journal and is not a recreation.  Enjoy!

    Welcome To Borden.

My name is Andrew Thebeau.  I am twenty-two years old.

I live with my girlfriend Jessica Moulaisson (Who is also twenty-two) on the sixth floor of One Peir Place, in Borden, New Brunswick.

Our apartment has a lakeview balcony and a downtown facing bedroom window.  The smell of cinnamon buns lingers in our kitchen!  (Sorry, we're obsessed with them!!)  Peir Place is two seven storey apartment buildings right next to old peir 3.  Borden's full of defunct peirs.  Only one actually has something on it, and i think it'll be replaced by endless acres of food courts one day.  Peir 2 and 3 have shops and wharves while 4 has a small marina.  The rest, (I think there are about ten) have food courts and vending stations covering them.  Peir 7 has a Cinnabon resteraunt on it!

Our dog's name is Tori.  He likes cinnamon buns too!  Tori is a four year old beagle.  We also have four goldfish: Eeny, Meeny, Miny and Moe.  Sadly, we can't feed them cinnamon buns...

Its now 2:00 PM in Borden, New Brunswick.update11ge7.jpg

Me and Jess just got up this morning and had our breakfast cinnamon buns (yummy) and felt that since it was such a nice day out, that we should get some fresh air and excersise.  Along with a little of our favourite passtime, window shopping!

    update12pw6.jpg

(Our building is the one with the blue roof and brick facade on the left.)

So we put our dog in his kennel, and left our building from the north entrance (the one facing downtown).

It was about 22 degrees celcius out right now, and the air smells like a bus just passed by.  I put my hand with Jessica's and we walked across King Street towards the corner of King and Carleton, where the round cornered Aliant Telecom building sits.  We stood on the corner and decided which direction to walk.

    update14ls6.jpg

We decided to head west towards King Tower and the New Brunswick Power Building (both have 9 floors and are the tallest buildings in Borden.  Borden's not very big at all) on the corner of King and Westmorland.  Both these buildings have a little retail space on the ground floor, so why not window shop!

    update15so9.jpg

Hmm.  Nothing interesting on sale.  Let's turn back.

How about we go up Westmorland Street.  There are some interesting buildings there, like the IBM Center.

    update16ai4.jpg

We then turned east on the next street north, Court street.  Yes there is actually a courthouse on it.  A big stone building with ugly little parking lots around the sides.

Then we walked back down Carlton Street.

    update17sg2.jpg

This street used to be the main street but now, it seems it's always dead.  Bars and nightclubs seem to flock in this area.  I think a Saint Cinnamon used to be here when I was in High School...

We walked down Carlton all the way to King again, but went east towards Trust Street and walked north on it.  Not much interesting on this street except Dailey House, a 10 storey midrise office building.  It has a big glass arch at the top.

You can see the base of it here:

    update18bl0.jpg

We'll see a better view later.

Agh!  My legs are getting tired and Im hungry.  Lets go get a bite to eat somewhere.

    update19zr8.jpg

Sainsbury's is a really good café, and makes AMAZING cinnamon buns!

We got cinnamon buns and a milkshake to share.  ;-)

Oh man it gets dark out early now!!!  Looking out the front window of Sainsbury's, our apartment building already had the lobby lights on!  So, we decided to visit the Micheal Flemming memorial.  Micheal Flemming is the founder of Borden.  He died in 1947 and this statue was erected in his memorium, along with Flemming Square and a brand new office building with a shopping area on the bottom.  It is eight stories tall and its facade appears diagonal on the park.

    update191yf0.jpg

You get a nice view of the glass dome of Dailey House here on the right.

Okay, I guess thats enough window shopping and walking for today.  Im tired.  So is Jess.

Watching our Family Guy DVD seems like a good idea right now!  Goin' home now!

The big, bright white flashing lights on the top of our building guided us home.  The lights look so massive and powerful, but them being so silent dillutes that thought.

    update193gn9.gif

Ahh...downtown always looks so nice at night from our window...:-)

I hear Stewie Griffin cursing on the television and the air conditioner blowing through Jessica's hair.  Oh, so relaxing...

    update192xc2.jpg

    Good night, Borden.

Hawkeye9 - Thanks for the first reply on Borden!

Simworld 056132 (Jake) - Thank you...for that very colourful compliment!

Bubba_luey163 - Thanks, it will remain midrised!  Im tired of huge metropolises.  The building Andrew (not me) and Jess live in is bgtcn's Jebel Blove On Shore.

JoystickJunkie - It probably is a great place!  Im actually thinking of just keeping the pictures to a city view.  I want to keep it as story-based as possible, and not show many overviews.  I might show a few each update and look forward to some possible mosaics...2.gif

    Jacqulina - Thank you!

pipishere - Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!

Kippis05 - Thanks, Im glad you like Borden!

jacqulina - Once again, thank you for being so positive with the comments :-)

Simworld 056132 - Once again thank you for your colourful comments!

Hawkeye9 - Oh you're about to find out about that *BANG!* Thanks for your ongoing interest.

Nardo69 - I love brick.  So much.  Thanks!

football_fever - Haha!  Lets Go To Prison is apparently pretty funny...I never saw the whole thing...I only saw that part :-D  Cinnamon Buns ROCK!

SIMMANIA - Thanks, I do plan to keep this style up.

MadTV_Freak - Thank you!  Comments like that make my day!

socomseal45 - Thanks, thats pretty cool, considering I only made up the name!

fledder200 - Like I said above, replying to football_fever, apparently Lets gGo To Prison is a funny movie.

rw0381c - Sweet!  I live in Fredericton!  Monctons not really that small...its the biggest in New Brunswick.  Notice the names of the streets in Borden are similar to some streets in Fredericton.  Also, New Brunswick is what I named Borden's country.

bubba_luey163 - No problem.  I agree, highrises are becoming overused.  Go to your nearest Cinnabon or Saint Cinnamon (or Tim Hortins) if you really get a craving!

    Crisis on Court Street

    update295wk1.jpg

Smoke is rising from the corner of Westmorland and Court.

Andrew: Hey, Jess!  Come in the bedroom and look out the window!  Do you see that?

Jessica: Oh my god...smoke?  I wonder what's going on!

    ...

    update31ra7.jpg

    ...

    update32zq7.jpg

    ...

Jessica: Turn on the TV to the news.  This isn't right...there wouldn't be just a random bonfire in the middle of downtown...

    Andrew: Yeah, that's right...

    update33jv3.jpg

Andrew:  Oh my lord, it's that old warehouse!  Its on fire!

Jessica: The ugly blue one that doesn't fit in?

Andrew: Yeah, that one.  I hope it doesn't spread to other buildings...its not very far from our building!  Look!  The news helicopter!

Jessica: Where the frig are the firefighters!

Andrew: The stations way uptown...I think I hear them coming down Regent Street!

Jessica: Hey, turn the TV up!  I cant hear it.

    update34th1.jpg

"We are live above the scene of the Margerie Chocolate Warehouse fire in the BTV News Helicopter.  As you can see, the police are feverishly evactuating the immeadiate area, along with a large group of bystanders watching the fire from the street.  They are evacuating mainly the block of Westmorland Street, Court Street, Carlton Street and King Street.  The fire has the ability to spread unless firfighter s arrive soon on the scene.  The nearest station is about 1 kilometer away, all the way uptown.  And traffic on Regent Street is heavy, slowing them down even more."

    update35sx2.jpg

"Fire and smoke has now started to burst out windows and doors.  There doesn't seem to be much smoke, but only a few windows have broken open.  This could be bad for hte inside of the buidling.  Traffic has now been blocked off by officials.

Oh no!  A window has just burst open and fire is shooting out in massive quantity through the--another window has--and another window has broken open with fire spewing out with smoke filling the area!  We advise people around Downtown Borden to saty indoors, as air quality will soon get poor.  It would have been better if the wind was blowing towards Spooner Lake, but it is blowing towards the inner part of Shetland Island.  There goes another window!  Glass is also a big factor of danger here.  We advise people to stay indoors."

    The next Day

    update36nl2.jpg

Andrew: Its still smouldering...it looks really freaky...Im glad everyone got out...

Jessica: Yeah...Pew...It smells like smoke out here...and our apartment smells like smoke too.  Oh crap!  The windows open!

Andrew: Nah, I closed it.  It still smells like smoke though.  Everywhere it does.

    Jessica: Yeah...

Andrew: Im hungry.  Wanna stop off at Sainsbury's?

Jessica: Sure.  I already know what Im getting.

    One month Later

    update37vf2.jpg

Construction has started as the site of the former warehouse.  It turns out that repairs would be too expensive for the owners, so they just turned the property over to the city.

Apparently, Borden was running low on office jobs!  No one really realised it...but thats what they said.  From the looks of things, this construction site is something you dont see in Borden that often.  Me and Jess can even see that big crane from our bedroom window.

    update38wv6.gif

I can't wait to see what theyre gonna build.  I think we got some notice for a community meeting about the building...I never go to those anyway...

    Meanwhile

    update39dw2.jpg

Cashier at Borden Central Rail Station: How was your train ride, sir?

    Man:

Pretty good.  Thanks for asking.  The rail is pretty smooth.

    Cashier:

That's good.  Okay, here's your transaction.  You're staying at the Holiday Inn Express at Uptown Borden?

    Man: Yes, thats right.

Cashier: The bus traveling there will be arriving shortly.

    Man: Thank you.

    ...

    update391zf3.jpg

Man: Oh I cant wait to get some sleep...

The three worst words in the English language - "Trial. By. Jury." I need to see that movie

Anyway, I like how you did the building burning down - very modest. With the current trends on the CJ board, "crisis" would mean nuclear explosion. I'm glad you went the way you did

ABSOLUTELY awesome. It's CJ's like this that make me want to play, but it's 2 in the morning here and I'm tired... Great work, I may bookmark this. I love this type of mayoring too. Metros are too hard, and towns are a bit too quiet. I love those adolescent town-cities. Beautiful.

Great work on update numero 3!

I know, like you said, Moncton is the biggest city in the province, but let's keep in mind it is still very much mid-rise only. The only building that has more than eight floors is Assumption Place at 20 floors. I recognized alot of the street names you used, some even have relevance here in Moncton.

Oh, I must also note that I like how your CJ is not blown out of proportions like some others out there, like someone mentionned above, you didn't make your crisis a nuclear holocaust, and I can appreciate that!
