Cross Regional Transportation...

<p>I started a new region and so far I have 4 rural cities. Two Mediums and Two Smalls. The population of these regions arn't really huge because I'm focusing on spreading urban development OUTWARD rather than UPWARD. Okay now to the question.<br /><br />I put my Industrial City far to the south medium tile. It is directly connected to one small residential city and one medium residential city. The other small residential city is far to the North and has no direct boundaries to the industrial town. My question is this... If I ran a Highway (considering the funds probably a tollway) from the North most residential city, through the South most residential city, and into the Industrial City far to the South, would Sim's from my North most residential city cross more than one border to access my southern industrial city?</p>

It might be easier if the the industrial city was between the two residentials.

You also might consider a Commercial-oriented city between the north res city and southern industry city.

Comm loves traffic, and you'll give your northern residents a closer place to work.

Make sure you have good saves on an external medium for your region, then try monorail instead of a highway.  Remember that monorail stations have no parking, so buses are needed and/or parking garages at the res end.

As for the HTML, check your profile to ensure it is off.  Also check your browser's settings.  It should not be generating HTML on you.

I think the farthest a sim will travel is about 4 city tiles (varys with size) but I'm not sure

Actually Sims will walk 8 grid tiles, but that is the total of walking in the entire trip, both ends and in the middle.

From what you say, small population, etc, I'd agree with N_O_Body. Forget the highway and try monorail or other type of rail or subway. The highway will cost a lot and they'll use it, but probably not enough to justify the expense, even with tolls. Plus, the rail will be not only more efficient, but better for your pollution stats, etc.

If he drives his own car, it depends on the circumstances.  Maximum 2 Sim-hours, I think.

I think the point of the question was, if it works in within time constraints, will a sim travel to a indirectly connected city via a highway/subway/el rail/monorail etc.

    EG: R X I

Each letter is a different city, will the sims drive from the R city through the X city to get to the I city for work, or will they only drive into the X city to look for it?

    Cheers

yes i believe this has been demonstrated that they will travel across city tiles.. be careful though not to make LOOPS out of your network as they will leave then go right back sometimes.. or go to the next city and then come back where they came from

I used the NAM with some of the pathfinding mods and I have a pretty developed region with many avenues and freeways and trains crossing into every city.  The SIMS use all these heavily.  If freeway or train is the only route to the industrial city the SIMS will use it eventually when your region is completely covered in networks and city you won't even have a problem, SIMS will be using any connection between cities heavily.  I have 6000 using a freeway with an avenue nearby with over 15000, and another avenue further south with 10000+ and some trains with over 2000 passengers going between all my tiles.

I used to do this often myself, even providing HEAVY multi paths to allow MONSTER amounts of intracity traffic. I have since concluded, after a lot of looking at traffic, that many sims, due to a lack of intelligence on the part of the pathing algorithms, are simply forming "commuting loops" and in fact are not contributing to the success of the cities and finding jobs. Perhaps you don't have this problem, but I now work hard to provide a more controlled transit system. I cannot say wirh firm conclusions that the new way is "right" and the old way is "wrong" but I certainly am a personal convert so far.. There was a thread on this a while back.. *rummages through old messages"
