A city designed to fail

So I made this city "Dumpsville" obvious for failure but somehow, someway manages to get a population of almost 10 million.  I did one of those set it and did something else for 3 hrs on cheetah mode w/ no alerts.  Now it stinks that the city is gone, but i was quite amazed, how do all those people fit in there.  On a medium map?

Welcome, Tweakfreak. Funny, I've built a few cities that I had planned for doom, and one of them, a totally dirty industrial cesspool is now 95% R$$$. That WASN'T the plan, but that's how it turned out.

From what I see, you might have downloaded some buildings and not the dependencies to go along with them because of all those blank lots you have.

I tried the same once. I wanted a riot so I created a High-Density city with no police, no water, no fire, no hospital, and no ordinances. Oddly enough, my mayor rating remained in the Green. o_O whatever.

A city designed to fail? Try building a lot of NIMBY buildings. It might work.

The reason why some of the buildings are not there is because my laptop gfx card wasn't drawing them(it sucks) If I zoom in they will be there.  The only mod I have is NAM.  It hovered around 43,000 for the longest time, they really wanted commercial, so I zoned some more and it took off.

A similar thing has happened to me. I decided I had had enough of a particular city so I removed all civic services, built loads of coal power plants and used the disaster's tool. The city continued reasonably well despite what I was doing and I nearly had to destroy the entire city before my mayor rating really dropped significantly.

Your game is obviously VERY messed up. You should have gotten the run for senator dialogue LONG before -4 billion. Also, theres no way that city has 10 million, at the very most theres 300,000 sims there.

Either this is a photoshopped joke (which wouldn't be too hard) or a serious game glitch.

I have a program on my pc called cheat engine and i could, if iwanted to edit the numbers in the game e.g change the population number on the main panel to a high number so it looks like i have loads of people in my city but really i only have about 200,000.and i could also do this with money. and then edited the mayor rating in photoshop or equivilant. is this what camaron has done?

thats awsome. 10 million people!! that must be a serious glitch. the most i've ever gotten in a cty is around 63,00. oh yeah and i can negetive 4 billion dollars and then get kicked out? i can only get aroun 80,00 dollars and i get kicked. thats sweet.

you know what, that sounds familiar, a long time ago there was an app out for SC4 and it allowed you to do that, it's entirely possible he did that but I don't remember if it edited population. It was a program written by a Russian bloke. I don't remember where it came from though...

when i first got cheat engine i was trying it out and edited the population but changed it back because i hadn't actually achieved anything,so it was boring andhaving unlimited cash was pointless. So you can edit the population. the only thing i dont know about is the mayor rating bar but i think that could be edited with Cheat Engine or a similar program or some picture editing software.  The message game over would  appear after you edit the cash so low and played for a bit.

I didn't modify anything on the game other then the transportatoin add on that everyone uses. Like I said I just set it and left for a few hours... i should try this again and see if i can reproduce the same results.

Hmm, the population bar says 9mil, though it's easy to photoshop that...

Now if you *really* want a city to fail, use one of the super demand things, and then turn it off once the pop. has griwn quite high, heheh. Great way to simulate an economic crash.

9 million with such a layout... looks like technically impossible to me... as long as the residentials have their standard capacity. apart from that, there's way to few residential areas, looking at the small overview map.

i dont think there was actually 10 million it might be a glitch i once had a city. with 100 k i played it one day and as it opened up the population magically jumped to 200 k and then a few (game) months later it went back down to 100k without any new buildings. and this happened only with pure maxis content no downloads.

Heh, well, this is... interesting. If the treasury were -2147483648 or something close to it, it would be obvious what happened: The city made too much money and wound up overflowing the money variable. The problem is, that would only work if said variable were a 33-bit one, which does not really sound likely... hm... maybe it's stored with 64 bits but is handled as a 32-bit one (i.e. only the lower half is handled) in some parts of the code... though I'm still not sure how this would cause an overflow to the upper half.

Have any of you actually studied the zone map on the image?? Less than half of the map is zoned at all due to water...and of the area which is zoned, the amount of residential is a mere fraction of what's available. I'm not bothering to try to figure out exactly how many tiles are given over to residential zoning, but even if we estimate it at 300 (which it isn't), then we're looking at more than 31,000 sims per TILE !!

Come on, its either a hoax or a bug, full stop.
