Before my Madden thread starts going off-topic, I decided to start a next generation Console thread. This includes the PS3, XBox360, and the Revolution.

Here is a pic for Project Gotham Racing 3, presumably for the XBox360:

10 years ago it is all about gameplay and fun; now it is all about gimmicks [anything that don't contributes to gaming) and graphics.

No matter how top norch and flashy today's consoles are, they'll never beat the good old SNES age's games. They are the classics.

I have to disagree with that. Gameplay has evolved along with graphics (maybe not as much, but a lot nonetheless) and besides, graphics do contribute to the overall experience (no matter how many times some people say they don't). More lifelike, believable games are possible with better graphics, and immersion and make-believe is what gaming is all about.
Btw, NES was much better than the SNES. I had more fun with my Genesis than I did with the SNES back then.

And to keep this on topic, let me just say how this screenshot amazed me when I first saw it. Gamespot put it beside a real-life picture of the car, and the in-game picture looked better. As the #1 fan of the MSR/PGR series (I still regret selling my Dreamcast and not being able to play MSR ever since), I'm drooling in anticipation. I can't wait see the list of cities featured in PGR3...

Looks nice, but couldn't it be one of the many fake next-gen console pictures that have been flooding the Internet lately?

Well here is another supposedly leaked pic of an XBox 360. Personally, I hope it doesn't look like this. This thing is ugly! Hopefully this thing is just another photoshopped fake.

I am looking forward to the Revolution and the XBox 360. Sony has lost my hope for years, because they have a habit of putting gimmicks into everything they sell (Camcorders, cameras, PS, PSP) -- gimmicks are everything that don't add to the original purpose or simply make it more confusing -- mp3/UMD on PSP, DVD player on PS2, touch screen manual control on a $1400 camcorder...)

There have been some more reliable, per se, screens from OurColony.net that have it looking like a Dell rackmount server (the style I mean, its hard to explain what I am thinking) but it does look more like a polished dark gray, rather than soft white or solid metal. The metal one looks like it could fry eggs if left out in the sun 31.gif

Also, games don't have to be 2D to be about gameplay or fun. Aestetics are a part of gameplay in this day and age and prove to enhance the gameplay experience. Yes, games were good back then (although I prefer the NES) and I still find Mario Bros. games to be really fun, these nex-gen systems are still the same soure of entertainment. Lights being shot out at a screen, forming patterns and keeping us distracted from the dredge of everyday life.

    So many quote signs!

Just play a good few hours of Doom 3 and you'll see how much of a difference graphics can make... it's got basically the same plot and gameplay as Doom 1 and 2, but it's waaaay more fun... especially with 5.1 surround sound.

Actually I photoshopped it myself. I did it pretty quickly, so it has its flaws.

    What do you think?

Will the Xbox360 have backwards compatibility?

The PS3 is supposed to have full backwards compatibility, so it would even run PSX games. I can't wait to see what Gran Turismo 5 will look like, as the PS3 will have a revolutionary new processor in it.

I am not interested in the Revolution, as I love classic Nintendo games but don't get any enjoyment from playing the contemporary ones.

I know that the Revolution will have backwards compatibility, but I'm not sure about the Xbox360. But if Microsoft does indeed use HD-DVD formatting for the games, then they would have to include a separate drive for plain 'ol Xbox games, because Xbox games are on plain CDs, are they not?

And, just to make things a little more interesting, a question for you all: Why does Nintendo think the Revolution will be so...revolutionary? They've been dropping hints about processors and all that jazz not mattering anymore, and they've registered a patent on some gyroscopic technology...what do you think?

Supposedly they will use some input device that is not new, but will be used in a totally new way. Whatever that is.

Radiohead: the Xbox uses DVDs... you can watch DVD movies on it. Plus, a DVD drive can usually read plain CDs.

As for the Revolution, I've heard its controllers will have touch screens just like the DS. I particularly don't think that would be a good idea... anyway, we'll have to wait and see.

DVDs eh? I wasn't that far off, lol. Anyways, there's a rumour going around that Nintendo won't show the Revolution at E3, just some videos of games in-development. I know the Sony will be there, and that Xbox is unveiling the Xbox360 on MTV on May 12th. It would be pretty dumb for Nintendo not to be there as well. What do you think?

Shouldn't HD-DVD drives be able to read regular DVDs? It would only make sense, because you need some old media to fall back on when introducing new equipment.

Only a blind person would not know that graphics have improved dramatically in video games, but I would certainly say that games have more depth. Sometimes simpler is better, though, which attributes to the love of Super Mario Bros. on the NES. Still, a complicated game both in graphics and gameplay such as Gran Turismo 4 is fun as well.

    Here's my 2 cents, for whatever that's worth18.gif

XBox360 and PlayStation3 - both will be great, but will probably offer nothing NEW except better specs.

Revolution - Nothing yet is KNOWN about it (the touch screen example was just a metaphore on how new the concept is)  I'm waiting on E3 in May before I pass my judgement.

Although, I'm thinking whatever system(s) use the Blu-Ray disks will come out on top.  They're supposedly supperior to HD-DVD disks.  Personnaly, I'm hoping Nintendo's Revolution and the PS3 win out.... I never liked XBox, and most of their games eventually make it to PC anyways.

I'd rather see Nintendo and Xbox win over Sony. I hope Sony crumbles. They are what is wrong with the video game industry. Same old crap over and over and over and over again.

I do hope sony falls. I like nintendo and microsoft. Nintendo has my favorite classic game metriod, which was very fun. Paper Mario was great, and the new legend of zelda looks better than that stupid wind walker. Halo and baulders gate are great for X-Box.

Whatever storage media is used for the games is pretty much irrelevant, it's just a storage device. If they could store games on a ham & swiss cheese sandwich, it wouldn't matter to me, as long as it worked and didn't get moldy 2.gif That said, it sure is handy to be able to watch DVDs on a console and not have to buy a separate piece of equipment to watch movies on.

I think of it basically this way, the only use for consoles is the ability to sit in front of your tv and play a game with your buddies instead of being at your computer, where it's a lot harder to do the social thing. Computers have better graphics, faster processors, bigger hard drives, and support more controllers than consoles, the only thing they lack is the social aspect. Even if you have a basement with 5 computers networked together it's not going to be the same as slacking on the sofa in front of a tv.
