City names are often derived from geographic features.  If your city is a port, then something like Ocean City is good.  If you have a couple of mountains nearby, choose something like Les Deux Montaignes.

On the other hand, if you want a city name that has no real meaning, try a mishmash of your own city name.  I live in Wasaga Beach, so I could use something like Beornanga Reach.

you could try using names of random objects around you, with equally random prefixes and/or suffixes. you can also use the name of the map you're using

For me, I normally use real-world names as it is quicker. I just simply look up in a gazeteer and pick a random word. But not all of us will be able to do it fairly without a help from the computer.

Some city names have prefixes like North and South West. There are quite a few ways to represent, for example, NW: NorthWest, Northwest, North West and so on.

In the end, the possibilities are endless.

Los Angeles= City of Angels

Yeah, that's a really good link.

I'd never seen it before but was surprised to see that I follow some of it anyway!

For example, I live on Harvest Circle and have cities named South Harvest, Harvestburg, Lower Harvest etc. and also functionally named ones such as Powerville and River Rapids and such.

Cheers.

And then, if you are planning to build a BIG city, you can add in front of whatever name Greater. Like Greater New York, Greater Los Angeles, Greater Dublin...etc...

For some reason I'm into Italian sounding names. Try Monicello or Giovannela. = )

Just throw some words together, maybe look at some objects around you, it helps me when I'm stumped, although it's easier for me to use real city names instead. Take for example, your city has alot of oak trees in it, you could call it Oak Park. Hope this helps 4.gif

I usually just open a dictionary to a random page and pick a word... and repeat if the word sucks. You can really do this with any book. It is amazing how many words make good city names, if you just accept that if you use a word like "sells" (which I did once) that it can be a city name and not have anything to do with selling stuff. It's just a name. So my current city is called "Sells" which I think is pretty good. I usually use this technique, with any book around me whether its a dictionary, manual, a page, atlas, map... etc...

I use the random first and last names and maybe a few Sufixes and Prefixes and maybe words like City,Village,Town,Hub,etc. I use the Family Creater since it works pretty well and I can use it in the sims 2 as well.

Street atlas can be a good place to start. My current region has Connaught, Inglewood and Brisebois which are all streets in either Halifax or Calgary.
