In case anyone finds them useful, here are some pictures of random roof junk.

These pictures were taken from a hill behind a shopping center.  It's a strip mall with a grocery store, drug store, pizza place, Chinese restaurant, dollar store, Subway, and so forth.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

That is nice...

Also what I use, it doesn't provide very good views for shape, but for layout and scale, google earth provides a great look at building roofs.

It's also very nice for scaling real world buildings.

Thank you.  There's no such thing as too many new ideas... in fact, I think I just got a couple looking at this!

Thanks!  Glad you guys find such things useful.  I drove down that road several times thinking it was a half-decent angle for taking pictures of roof junk.   I'll keep my eyes open for other opportunities.

Thanks, guys!  I'm glad you find them interesting.

I encourage everyone else to post their roof junk pictures here.  I can't be the only one who has some.

I'm using a 7 megapixel camera, which means I have to reduce them in size to post them here.  Which means I could get some close-ups of some sections if they would be useful.   Stuff like this:

    closeup19vq.jpg

    closeup23yb.jpg

    closeup32nh.jpg

I don't BAT so I don't know what people need, exactly.  But I can see how both the wide-range and close-up views might come in handy.

I hope this isn't out of line, but I figured since this is now stickied I would add some more to the collection. These are from the one and two storey commercial buildings that are across the street from my apartment tower. I took these from my balcony. They have been the inspiration to almost all of the roof equipment I have used in my BATs. Enjoy.

One good rule that I think applies for small buildings and roof junk is if there is food made in the buidling double the amount of roof equipment. It seems kitchens require lots of ventilation and such. You can see it in my pictures. The first picture has a Second Cup, the third has a Booster Juice, a Tibetan restaurant, a Vietnamese restaurant, a coffee shop and a pizza place and the last with the huge collection of roof junk is the Broken Plate restaurant and bar. Anyway, hopefully these will be useful to someone.

Well, apparently I'm becoming a "complete geeked-out 'roof junk' dork". I don't even BAT and yet, somehow I manage to get distracted by roof junk I see in passing. Go figure.

I was thinking about something that someone (budweiserdude, I believe) said a while ago. He felt that many BATTers used too much roof junk.  As I recall, he has an RL job where he spends a lot of time on one roof or another and, most of the time, there just isn't that much junk up there.

Then I got to thinking about what Spa said, that the commercial kitchens found in restaurants need more ventilation and have more roof junk. It makes perfectly good sense: RL builders don't put roof junk up there to make it look realistic; they put it there because it serves some RL purpose. The quantity and type of roof junk should match the function of the building.

Which is one reason the following roof initially surprised me. I was on a second story stairwell in the building next door so I had a fairly good view of the roof.  At first, it seemed to me that there was an excessive amount of junk up there.

I didn't know what the building was so I had to go look.  Turns out it is "Funeral Home and Crematory".  Guess they really do need all of that stuff.   34.gif

Anyway, here are some more random close ups:

Very nice thread! But i really cant avoid thinking about what would happen if some person not knowing about BAT or Sim City would find this thread by accident... Some people post kinda non-artistic, straight-off pictures of chimenys and ventilators and other pepole are soo thankful and say that they are really great... This surfer must think that he has found the most stupid people in the world 4.gif

It's actually neither 4.gif It's the C-Train bridge that crosses the Bow River and links Northwest Calgary by lightrail to downtown. If you look closely you can see the overhead electric wires that power the trains. The bridge does have a pedestrian deck underneath but you really can't see it in this photo.

Skigeek: More great photos. I was looking at the chimneys and thinking wow those are heavy duty chimneys and they seem to go up unusually high. Quite a startingly realization when you revealed a few lines later that the place is a creamatorium! Quite morbid, but it does match the "they serve a function point." On the whole batters probably do go overboard on roofs but given that roofs are a lot of what we see in Sim City it's not really taht surprising. A slight exaggerations is probably actually best.

LOL -- you have a point.  It would look a bit baffling from the outside.    So far, no one has asked me what I was doing when I was taking the pictures, although the explanation "I know these guys who are really into roof junk" probably wouldn't explain anything.  3.gif  I did mention "Ah!  A good place to get pics for the roof junk thread" when I was at the top of the Space Needle and was answered with a nod of understanding.  But that was from Dirk.  Of course he understands.

Yeah, that was my point; that the junk matched the function of the building, morbid though it may be.   At first, I just noticed that, going up that stairway, I was at eye level with the roof junk next door.  It wasn't until I was I was taking the pictures that I noticed that it was unusual roof junk.  There are, what? about 6 air conditioning units up there, in addition to the heavy duty chimneys?  I was surprised to see that it was a crematorium.  I drive by this place all the time and it never registered.  34.gif

You're right; it's not that surprising, and not a bad thing, that roof junk gets a bit exaggerated.   I just hope no one puts the crematorium chimneys on a small house.  It just wouldn't match.  They could work on an industrial building, though.

Glad you guys appreciate the pics.  Thanks for the nice comments!

Most ppl don't know, but chimneys (that is stacks that emit gasses from burning stuff) has to CLEAR the highest point on the structure by X amount.. usually about 15 ft.. It varies a bit by area, but in the US at least it is pretty much in every city

I took two pictures of some roof junk from post-communist residential condos in Poland. I think they would be useful for someone who'd like to make some european R$ residential BATs.

wow.........this might be an understatement.....but those pictures (Simfox) could be the most incredible roof tops of any cluster of buildings I have ever seen in my life....Just look at those elevated park, the indcredible use of pedestrian pathways....amazing I don't care about what people say about communism (expcept for political emprisonment/censorship) China is on the brink of architectural marvel...who cares about Dubai.

I haven't any pictures on this at the moment but seeing as I do this for a living I thought I could point out a thing or two. There are a couple of resources you can look at, one being at www.hvac-talk.com (just another forum, you might want to look at the wall of fame and shame pictures) and the other at Yahoo! using the search>image function with the keyword "cooling tower" It will give you images of nuclear power plants but also pictures of cooling towers (which in essence is a big fan-coil unit so look for things with big fans and large piping)  FYI, if you've ever been to a hockey game and seen that big machine (and no its not the Zamboni) that is producing all that steam, that is a cooling tower. They are a main component in cooling throughout many highrises in the world. They are a part of a system called a chiller, another word you might want to look up. Hope this helps...

EDIT---I did find a couple of pictures...

This is a relatively decent sized rooftop unit I hepled install

    HVAC1.jpg

Here's a cooling tower set on the ground and a fairly small tower at that I helped set

    HVAC2.jpg

Here's my gumpy ass with my jeans falling off to a degree (hey I've lost weight but am too cheap to buy new pants, that's what belts are for) I'm trying to smile for the camera while working on a chiller condenser. This componnent is usually found inside a building as this one is.

    HVAC3.jpg

God I look stupid...I'm trying to concentrate and not get shocked at the same time.

Bixel: well, Dubai is nothing more but an attempt to emulate China! Question will there be enough money when oil runs out (I've heard that in Dubai itself that would happened by the year 2010).

I specially posted those to show people what could be made with roofs, there is so much talk about how roofs are important in game, and people try to put on them all sort of odd and irrelevant, often plain ugly, stuff.

Another thing to pay attention is WHAT IS REFLECTED in windows?? Any clouds? Eh?

About 10 percent or so of dubai's overturn comes from Oil so that wont be an issue to private economy.

Anyhow Abu Dhabi got at least 100 more years of oil with todays pace.

Your post was quite arrogant btw. If you knew the UAE/Oman areas history youd know its present developement has nothing to do with China 43.gif.

    As for, that.

    Walls= cityscape/faint city reflections.

windows laying horisontal or close to that= clouds, but i have always wondered about this, what about walls that are, say  45 deegrees???42.gif
