What do you mean by an ambient color? Is this one of the map qualities? BTW since I asked this question, I  find I can make colors transparent in varying degrees by applying the map opacity in the map rollout on the Color Management properties... this becomes a daughter map to the primary selection. I am no expert but I don't think  it matters if u use a map or just apply the opacity quality with a default bmp  (the black square) ..

I have found an odd situation (to me anyways) tht once u apply successfully the transparent quality I can never get the opacity to go back up! Once you set it it seems to just hang on.. and I find it VERY HARD to judge how an opacity level  will look IN THE SCENE based on the view you get on the materials ball OR on the surface map shown in the perspective  view. Even deleting the UMV mapping and setting the opacities of both the map and the material setting to 100%... *shrugs*

I'm not sure you can have transparent textures to be honest although I'd happily be proved wrong. I always use a transparent dark greyish-blue-green colour for glass and then use the interior textures to alter the look of the windows. That maybe one way round it?

You can make them varying degrees of transparent all the way to being invisible.. take a  look at this :

TUTORIAL - using a .tga with alpha for transparency

In the Omnibus as I recall..

Extruding is good for walls, even glass and such; just extrude to a depth of zero and it works fine. It looks like you've got a smooth operator or something going on with that building's walls there-- you should uncheck all the smoothing groups so as to get a flat texture.

Oh and you definitely can have transparent textures. Point in case:

The night view clearly shows that the material is transparent, but in the day view you can see the applied texture.

Can someone help me on how to make mullions on a glass building? Or is it in the texture?

What I mean is, how do you create steel beams for a glass building?

Thanks to Dusktrooper for this great example:
Juneau_Bank_Day.jpg

I am merely using this building as an example. The steel mullions on the building. How do I create it? 42.gif

I know, it sounds a little n00by, but I want to get started on BATting. 1.gif

Draw a line where you want the mullions.  You can even have curved lines or lines with more than one segment.  Then tick 'Show Mesh' and set the number to the thickness you want.  For the example you showed, probably about 0.15 - 0.2 would be right.  You can then apply a metallic texture to the lines.  Finally, add a UVW map to every shape you crreate this way or it won't show in the render.

You need to make each spline an editable spline. then select one of your splines and click the attach button. then click on all the other splines. once all of them are selected un click the attach button. then weld2.gif

I'm using a tutorial that requires you to form a Lattice modifier. The tutorial is for 3ds but I was wondering if this modifier is in gmax (which I am using). Please someone tell me that this is available before I pull my hair out!

Short answer - No!  The lattice modifier, among others, is missing in gmax.

Here is my problem in gmax with a picture.  I drew an isometric view.
<ahttp://img474.imageshack.us/img474/4452/boxproblem5tk.jpg align=baseline>
I want to make a box with a face that has 2 curves.  I have played with the tutorials and I don't know how to make it work just right.  All I need is to know which basic modifiers and creation method to use.

Well, I figured it out. After playing around with about every type of modifier, I finally chose FFD modifier (box).  That worked perfectly, but I'll have to edit more than one box instead of them all at once.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but this is how I've done it.  Start with a box, such as this:

image01.jpg

Then, under modifiers - parametric deformers add a ripple modifier.  It won't look like much at first, as the default values are rather large.  You can change the values on the right panel and would get this with the listed ones.

image02.jpg

This has always been a fiddle with it job for me, as I keep messing with the values until it looks right (or at least what I think looks right). 3.gif   You can also add other modifers to massage the look to your taste.

Hi

im trying to make a skyscraper, but the hardest thing are the windows.
ex. I got a building that is tall as the Empire State Bulding and I want to add 2500 windows but I don't want to just texture the entire box with a texture that already has windows because they look ugly. I want to add them manually
 Is this possible?

J.A.P. : do you have Simtropolis Tools installed? If not get it! Its a huge time saver. 1st off I assume that you have array the windows (you instancing instead of copy its better for objects that are not going to be changed). Next using the Simtropolis tools rollout there should be something that says Random Window Colors (rollout). Lets say you want 4 different textures to put on your windows. Select all your windows, set param 1 to 4 then hit the random button. You windows should now be named c1-*nameofwindow*, c2-, and so on. Select all c1 windows and apply desired texture, select c2 apply different texture and so on.

I love coffee and buildings.

This may be a stupid question, but how do you make curved shapes that aren't circles? Like a box with one side rounded off? I don't really know how to explain this, but I hope someone can get the idea and help me.

Start with an NGON - 8 sides for octogon.  Extrude to the height and then apply taper to make it pointed.

EDIT: my mistake, I just read what Bixel was talking about, and I don't know of it. I did read some time back of a "Random Nitewindow" plugin someone was working on.
