  1. Cricket Sound...

Basically the game is buggy, even with sound off, especially when switching back to the game from the desktop such sound effects can start going off, my computer is connected to a hi-fi, occasional causing real audible pain, there isn't really a whole lot you can do about it I think. You can remove these sound files from every lot that uses them, but that is going to be a lot of them indeed.
  2. Something I've been working on. "At the end of my street"
  3. I'm using the same driver with Win7 64bit, albeit with a GTX 750ti, I am not having any problems, so I'm not sure if that driver is really the cause or not. So far as I can tell you've set everything up correctly, this region-view glitch is a strange one. It could be that the drivers between different cards are not the same even though they carry the same driver revision, or perhaps there is some feature that card lacks, although if anything I'd expect a newer card to be more likely to have problems than older ones due to SC4's needs to support legacy standards. Perhaps it's worth trying a different resolution, it could be that the one you are using has some problems, perhaps a standard resolution like 1280x720 or 1024x768 might be a good place to start? What options you have really depend on your laptop displays ability to use them.
  4. Try installing there is a mod in there which fixes the T21's to add the cantenaries to your new RRW tracks, it looks like you already have the correct cantenaries for the mod in that pic too .
  5. I guess it's the same for everyone then, so the results looked fine here when I tested the link, I've edited it for the time being, I wasn't trying to use that argument as advertising, merely that to suggest I have no knowledge of these things is factually inaccurate.
  6. I'm not trying to have a debate (in the context of your comments), but you state it does have an effect, but because it's negligible there is no effect, that's nonsensical, at best nit-picking? As for the suggestion I don't have any understanding of this, can I ask where all your mods are? Mine are on the STEX for all to see, I think for someone who's quite new to this, I do have a good grounding of how things work. I don't know everything of course, which is the purpose of debate. Much conjecture appears in these forums, sometimes it's very hard for the average person to know which parts are actually true or not.
  7. Desperately seeking tips for NAM

To give you an idea of how to drag FAR Roads: Imagine a box that is 8 tiles long and 2 tiles high. Drag one horizontal road from the top left of this box by 5 tiles to the right. Drag a second road from the bottom right of this box 5 tiles to the left. As the two sections meet they should auto-connect to create a FAR S-curve. Now if you make that box only 6 tiles long and drag each road in the same way, but for only 4 tiles, now you have a small section of FAR-2. Hopefully these simple explanations will help you to understand how the patterns you must draw to create draggable FAR/WRC pieces. For the rest of the pieces, see the diagrams in the NAM manual. The traffic simulator is the CORE of the NAM, without it I believe the NAM would not function, moreover this fixes what is otherwise a pretty broken game due to the bugs left in SC4 by Maxis, so it's kind of essential. If your computer is struggling with the entire (a large part of) the NAM installed, consider which items you actually want to use and make a custom install to lower the strain on your PC. NAM 32 should run a custom controller compiler during the install, if you get errors then you need to look into that, without it you won't benefit from the reduced-size custom version, which is especially useful for improving performance.
  8. I was of the understanding that within a certain radius of game water there was a small boost in desirability, wouldn't higher value land (however subtle) constitute a difference? I bet they do, even without checking, practically every MMP out there is made with copied flora exemplars most of which has positive effects in relation to pollution. Because even though you see water, the game sees every individual MMP plop as flora, so each plop of water is like plopping a tree for affecting the surrounding area in terms of it's effects. MMP's wouldn't work any other way, since they have to be flora. Even if no current water MMP's are currently working this way, it would seem like a sensible way of giving a positive effect to the surrounding areas. By the same rationale you could also make an area less desirable if you wanted to. I would add here, I did use the qualifier "those lots that are designed to do so" in my first post. I'm not implying everything works this way, although I can give you plenty of examples. Of course I'm specifically talking here about the way many mods/lots are modded to "fool" the game into making an area more desirable for sims.
  9. Ditching the cd...

But that's my point, I should spend $10 to buy something I already own to save me the inconvenience of installing it and two patches, all of 15m work, which I've done maybe 2-3 times in 2 years? Sure if you don't have a disk, or the disk is broken it makes more sense to download a copy (from a DRM free site), but if you have the disk, why on earth would that be the best way to go?
  10. Quite, but my point was trying to infer that creators already do these things, so as long as you download items made in this manner, you will find they do work to make areas nicer. Some work too well, the last thing you need is killing off all R$ development, by making everything too nice.
  11. MGB - SAM6 Darkened Mod

If you are having problems, please post in one of the support links in the description and I will try my best to help you.
  12. Fog of war type mod

Personally I'd just render the entire region, frankly I find it very hard to get a good overview of things whilst they remain unrendered. I accept this is a tedious task, but a nifty mod by DobDriver really speeds this process up, I highly recommend it, I used it to render a 74x74 large tile region in record time, still a PITA, but made much faster with the tool. There is a second custom resolution version too, you need to use a resolution supported by the mod, but it's pretty comprehensive between the two.
  13. $%&^! needs help

I think this should really be in the Support forum... Did you install the EP1 Update before the Nightlighting patch? These are two separate patches and must be installed in the correct order, EP1, then Nightlights. If the patch for EP1 fails, perhaps it's for the wrong region SKU, you could try another regions SKU-Version of the patch, often people find the country of purchase does not relate to the version they have installed. Note that the EP1 patch will only work if you have an original SC4 disk and will not work if the .exe has been modified in any way.
  14. J-style sidewalk mod

Usually a conflict causes a prop or other item to be replaced, it shouldn't cause brown boxes, that's usually only happening when you have missed something. Do you have the Light Replacement Mod (LRM Prop Pack), that is another dependency that I don't see listed above?
  15. Desperately seeking tips for NAM

It sounds like you are having problems with either puzzle pieces or starter pieces, there is no simple one rule to solve all your problems, some of these items just require a bit of experience before you become comfortable with using them, each can have their own little niches. The NAM manual PDFs are very well written, have pictures illustrating key points and really help you to get the most out of the product, I'm not sure what you mean "are to no avail to me"? If you have a specific question regarding a specific task it's pretty easy to give you an answer, but if your question is generally how the whole thing works, well your best option is the readme. In case you didn't know, these are installed in the SimCity 4 folder (not the plugins folder) in a folder named NAM Auxillary Files\Documentation. Once again if there is a specific part you don't understand or would like further explanation on, people here will no doubt assist in a timely manner. It is very hard however to answer such general questions. Generally speaking, you do want to flatten any area you will be placing puzzle pieces beforehand, often these will not place unless they are on flat land without any bumps. Some pieces will plop on top of the existing network, others will not and the existing network may need to be deleted and then reconnected.
  16. Ditching the cd...

I don't understand the logic of paying a second time for a game when I have a perfectly usable disk hanging around, for me that's a waste of money. Installing two patches is hardly a huge negative either. I think I've managed to have only two or three original disks ever develop problems. I've some very early audio CDs that still work, the lifespan on these things if taken care of is pretty good. In fact, given what I've seen of DRM, CD's are for life, not just for as long as the DRM server allows you to install that game you "rented" when you thought you were buying it. I have been avoiding using the disks themselves since I started playing games on PC, I mean it's not like other fully installed programs ask you to do this sort of nonsense, could you imagine having to insert the Office disk every time you wanted to run your word processor, it would be ridiculous?
  17. But that's rather the point of assigning values for air cleaning/park and landmark effects to things like trees, parks, ponds, rivers etc (even ploppable MMP water can have these positive effects). I believe there is some system in the game for improving desirability around game water too. Therefore those items which have been designed to do so will affect Sim Happiness, most lots have some small effect which when you plop a lot of items together can make a big difference.
  18. Certainly the NAM team themselves would be more likely to know such intricacies of their mod than anyone else. The custom controller should only install what is required, provided it runs during the install without error. I'm guessing there may be some things that get installed for everyone though.
  19. Maxis Highway Retexture help

If you are sure you've installed the correct mod "Maxis Highway Override" is the one you need from the NAM installer for Project Symphony. If you have that and the Maxis Highway retexture installed together, then it sounds like the retexture mod is overriding Project Symphony, therefore find and remove this (and any other highway mods) from your plugins folder and that should fix it.
  20. MGB - SAM6 Darkened Mod

    Version 2.36.1

    1,544 Downloads

The SAM (Street Addon Mod - NAM) is one of those indispensable mods, adding a wealth of variety to street networks. But SAM 6 however was a little too bright for my tastes, so I've darkened the textures slightly, to reduce their visual impact. This is one of those things I often tinker with, I figured that some others may also find it useful. v2.36 of SAM 6 Darkened (Nov 20) includes the following improvements: New Rail Crossing textures, based on those from NAM36. Support for RRW, PEG 205 and Maxis original textures still covered. Many fixes/improvements. Full EU Texture support. NEW SAM WRC support. Install This mod is packaged as a Windows .exe installer. For those that would prefer not/are unable to use an Installer, the NSIS installer files can be opened with 7zip or a similar application. If you wish to do this, you will have to manually setup the folder/file structure with the correct individual files within the archive. Please refer to the installed documentation for further details, note these files are installed here: My Documents\SimCity 4\LEX_Downloads\MGB Mods This is to avoid cluttering up your Plugins folders with non-SC4 files. De-Coupling Rail Crossing Textures When installing SAM 6 Darkened, you can de-select the Rail Crossing Textures. This option exists, so users with other mods, will not have issues when installing SAM 6 Darkened, even if SAM 6 Darkened loads after them. The Rail Crossing Textures should be de-selected if you are using the RRW Reskin mod. Note: No SAM 6 Darkened support is included for such optional custom textures, you need to get compatible versions from elsewhere, or those networks will remain with the default style. This feature simply allows you to prevent this mod from conflicting with them. Dependencies / Compatibility The NAM is required to make use of this mod, specifically you must install set #6 of the Street Addon Mod or the contents of this mod will never appear in-game. Network Addon Mod This mod is designed for either the US or EU Cosmetic ReTexture mod in the NAM. Both RHD and LHD textures are supported. Additionally you can select from three rail types, Maxis, PEG 205 or RRW (Real Railway). Help make this mod better Found a missing or unsupported texture? Having problems or Got comments? Then why not visit my thread at either SC4D (MGB's Mods and other stuff) or Simtropolis (MGB's Lot and Mod Shack)? I would like to say a big thank you to the following people Rivit, for the huge support and tools that made this mod possible in the first place.
  21. I believe the NAM is required for the BTM to work, I don't know when it was first included in the NAM, but it's perhaps possible to run one of the older versions if you can find it that might be more acceptable for your machine? There would be no official support if you did this, and you may encounter issues which were fixed in newer releases, but that's about your only option if NAM 32 doesn't work. If you previously installed NAM 32, did the installer run the custom controller? I'd imagine a custom NAM install with just the BTM would be reasonably small, although I don't know in practice what the minimum install you can get with NAM 32 is.
  22. any cheat to fix pollution?

I agree with money mods being a waste of time, I can print cash with Moolah whenever I like, think of it as SimQuantitative Easing. I would say this is a faulty plugin, did this happen after installing a particular mod? Best way to check, drop 5-10 Water treatment plants in the same area, run the game on high speed for about a year, does at least some of the pollution clean up? If you get little to no improvement, then you need to start looking for what mod caused the problem. Before you start, make a backup of your region, just in case. Then goto the affected city tile and get the bulldozer out, clean out segments of your city one at a time, you could start by removing half the city tile, run the game at full speed for a year (if needed) to see if the pollution improves. If not, exit without saving, return to the city and bulldoze the other half, this time it should go away. Once you've narrowed down which half the faulty plugin resides in, you need to repeat this process in ever-reducing areas until you can pin-point which area the problem is coming from. At this point take things slower and bulldoze a lot at a time and you should get your answer with the minimal amount of work. If by some chance you see no improvement after removing the first two halfs, then report back as you'll need to go in a different direction.
  23. I do recall something like this being mentioned before, I don't know of a specific mod, but I know DobDriver created a different UI skin (in this case to facilitate quicker rendering of regions) so it's definitely possible.
  24. What is this?

1080p is indeed possible with this game, for reference I am using the NVidia driver version 340.52 with my GTX 750ti at 1980x1080 and DirectX rendering without problems. My understanding is that some of the newer cards is where the issue stems from, but it does seem to be a driver support issue not a hardware incompatibility. However, if you decide to solve your problems with an older driver and newer hardware, the downside is that other games may have sub-optimal performance where the newer drivers better support them.
  25. What is this?

What resolution causes the problems? Perhaps it's unsupported by your GPU or Monitor or possibly SC4. You could try changing them to see what gives you a working display at the highest resolution possible, that may suffice. Almost certainly if you have not done so, you'll need to update your SC4 files to add your GPU to the list in SC4 as per the link in my first post. I've also heard some complaints recently that a newer NVidia driver seems to cause problems with SC4, have you tried going back a release or two to see if that improves things? It's also worth disabling any graphics options in the Nvidia control panel, turn everything to off/default to run SC4. It's possible to use these, but each setting may require some testing before you can work out what will/won't work with SC4 for you.
