FAM Project - Freeways, Highways, Interchanges
caleworley replied to QueenQcoeurleene's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
If the guy wants to create a modd, why discourage him? It was said early on in the thread that if he doesn't like the RHW network, then don't use it. That theory works both ways. If you don't like this guy's FAM network, then don't use it. Maybe by creating the FAM network he will learn some things about modding and go on to create something you do like. That being said, I don't understand why you want the community's permission to play around with modd ideas, unless you were looking for help or partners in the project. And for the record, this sounds a lot like Project Symphony. Good luck though. I myself have no idea how to even begin modding or creating BATs. I just enjoy the hard work of others. -
NWM is correct, not SAM. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for the replies. I'm not sure how I'll ever find the old DAT file(s) causing the issue but I'll do some scrolling through the plugin files. Thanks.

I promise I've searched the forums and readme for this issue, but I'm also new... please forgive me if this has been addressed. I download/installed NAM pre-release 32. I've had no issues and the files are awesome. I attempted my first use of the SAM add-on by making a 2-lane road with a center left turn lane. After placing the starting piece, and dragging the road network to extend it, I noticed about every four to five tiles a graphic bug. I've done everything I can think of to solve it. I then tried using a 4-lane road and received the same result. Any suggestions? Or is this part of the NAM being "pre-release" and this issue will be resolved with the final product?

Does putting the .dat files in a folder, within your Plugins Folder hinder the game's ability to retrieve those files later? I am organizing my Plugins Folder by doing just this... just want to make sure I'm not creating a headache for myself later. Also, for whomever did the work the the MHW's, they are awesome. For the time being, I'm using MHW's with all the upgrades and modds until I figure out the RHW's. -

I'm not complaining, I don't want it viewed that way. The compliation comes from the ability to customize every detail, and its overwhelming. This game has come a very long way from when I last played it, circa 2005. I guess if I had one request/suggestion for simplifying the NAM... cookie-cutter plopable exits and interchanges. I know that probably goes against the idea of having the NAM and RHW's. -

I literally flunked out of college because of SC4. After eagerly waiting for the new SC to be released after following its progress from announcement to trailers, to the disappointment those who bought it explained online. I decided at the last minute to NOT buy a brand new computer to run the game and the game itself until after its release after reading about how the game depended on your neighboring cities and that you had to stay connected at all times to run it. I smelled a problem, and I was right. So after nearly a decade, the SC bug was still in me last week when I reinstalled SC4, RH, and started snooping at the modds to tweak the game. Wow, has NAM come sooooo far. I was all excited about the RHW's until I started playing with them. Holy crap, this stuff is next to impossible to figure out. I'm not a computer genius, but I'm not an idiot either. And I am a gamer, everything from computer games like SC since its original to XBox... so this stuff is in my blood. I am trying to create a simple 8-lane highway. 8S, I believe its called. I tab through a gazillion pieces that all look the same until you plop them, and then it either doesn't fit right or screws up the highway I've already built, turning it back into roads. I like the 6C look of the RHW, but with the MHW modd, its the same thing without the hassle, until it comes time to create an interchange or exit. Please tell me it takes time and patience, and I'm just lacking both?? I've read the guidebook (hard to follow unless you know all the terms and abbreviations) and I've watched countless tutorials. Fustrating, I get Sisko87's pain. And his point. My city is still full of brown boxes, even after downloading hours and hours' worth of textures/dependancies. EDIT: I just did re-install the NAM (32's pre-release). This time, I used the custom install option and cut out about half the features that I doubt or will not be using when playing the game. Maybe this will help with my issues of endlessly scrolling through menus, tabbing through pieces, etc... -
LA itself is a metropolis. Look at the enormous sprawl that horrible city created. After all, it's SURROUNDED by cities upon cities upon cities. And you forgot the San Jose in SF-Oakland! quote> I guess I always thought that without LA and it's immediate surroundings... nothing else would be there. Maybe I'm looking at this wrong? Indianapolis is a uni-gov city. Other than Speedway, Lawerence, and Beech Grove, everything else is Indianapolis city. Where as other major cities have 100's of communities that have their own PD, FD and city government and they all make up a "metro area" I live and work in a city of 5000. I have no problems seeing the stars at night. I do have a problem with having to drive 60 minutes to southern Indianapolis in order to eat a decent meal, go to a movie, go shopping for even everyday items. Those who live in the city and suburbs are always complaining when a new Wal-Mart is being built, or whatever. I'd love a Wal-Mart Supercenter closer than an hour away! I'd love a 4-lane road between my hometown and anywhere that has shopping, movie theaters, family entertainment, etc.... Guess that's the difference between living in a major city and not.

I thought the idea of what a "metropolis" is, that it is a collection of large cities very close together. For example, Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas area. Or San Francisco-Oakland area. To contrast, look at LA, Detroit, Indianapolis, Atlanta. No other major cities outside of the downtown area. I am from Indiana, about an hour outside of Indianapolis surrounded by cornfields... so I don't pretend to be an expert on city life. However, if you took Indy out of the picture, the suburbs of Carmel, Noblesville, Greenwood, etc... would cease to exist. However, Indianapolis is a "metro".... by the way gets to decide to call it that? They even just combined the sheriff's department and Indy city police to make the Indianapolis Metro PD, again with the "metro" name. I like the wording of "edge cities" by HAWKPRIDE147. I have been to cities in Costa Rica and moreso in Mexico... both were the same way: a central downtown commerce area, followed by a couple miles of sprawl.

Hi everyone. I've been around Simtropolis for a long time, always kinda lurking around and just reading. Then one dark day, SC4/RH got boring. I got busy with college classes and just gave it up cold turkey. Even deleted everything SC4/RH related on my computer. I'm done with college and living back in my hometown working for the city police department. I have a lot of time when I'm off work that I can't sleep (because of my shift schedule), so I decided to re-do the whole SC4/RH thing. I've spent the last two weeks just uploading MODD's (to whoever worked on NAM... wow, you're contributions are better than the game itself when it was released!!!) and buildings. I got really tired of all that, and then I noticed this banner advertsing STEX CD's and DVD's. I bought them both, and should have them this week or early next. I am absolutely amazed at what this community has done for the game in the last 3 years since I've played. I've been playing Simcity since the very first classic. Classic was released in 1989. I was born in 1984! I loved that game, and still play it on the SC4 website from time to time. Anyways, I've decided I should participate more in the forums. I feel like with my experience with all the SC's, and the hundreds of city's I've made in the past 17 years, I might have something to add. I've decided to create my most extensive city (or region, I guess) ever. I've always been a fast builder, which leads to boredom. So, I'm going force myself to build slow! I plan on doing this by creating the most extensive CJ ever. I know that's quite a challenge... considering the competition I've seen. I've never really used photoshop either, so pretty'ing up some pictures might be difficult. We'll see. Whatever the means necessary (including entering some small cheats...) I want to create the most realistic looking city I can. Eye candy will be used, you've been warned. When I get that CJ up and running, I'll post it. Look for Burr Oak Metro coming soon.
