  1. Hi everyone ! i've been playing SC4 for a long time, but in huge on and off patterns. recently though, i've been playing more often, and my cities are reaching bigger sizes than ever before. one factor i have noticed, at least in the way i build cities, is that once they reach a certain size and my sims have decent amenities, dirty industry demand sinks to the floor and it doesn't grow anymore. as the demand for manufacturing and high-tech rises, do you think it's smart to start bulldozing heavy industry and let those take their place, or am destroying working-class citizen's workplaces and replacing them with industries they're underqualified to work at? i've experimented with this a little, but i'm afraid i'll do something irreversible and lose all my money struggling to build the middle class.
  2. company of heroes!

any CoH players here? I found an old topic from '08 but didn't want to bump it. I don't have tales of valor but i do have opposing fronts and i play regularly. i prefer to play with people agains the CPU, i prefer cooperation instead of competition. my name there is autumnsolace hope to find some CoH friends here! for those of you who don't know CoH is a WWII RTS game. probably the best RTS of all time in terms of strategy and graphics, which is impressive considering the original came out in 2006.
  3. New beta Cities Of World

this video says it has been removed by the user. i played your demo, though. the fact that tiles and roads disappear if you move off the straight lines of tiles is really annoying. i hope you fix that soon. everything else seems to be going well, though i did notice a road tiling problem. for some reason 1 piece of road would go somewhere i didn't put it, and show up somewhere else. this also happened on an industrial zone, but something grew there anyway.
  4. company of heroes!

I will send one your way next time I get paid can't wait for this mod!
  5. company of heroes!

incredible! all the hard work and dedication that looks to be going into this is remarkable. do you guys take donations? i'd much rather pay for this than tales of valor.
  6. company of heroes!

El Burro - that is so cool. me and my friend the other day were talking about how much we wish there was a soviet faction. i am so happy to hear about this mod! i hope it is all going well. can you play it online? i can't wait to see what it will look, feel and sound like. the models and screenshots look incredible. i'd love to play with you guys, and my friend , we usually don't have anyone else to play with.
  7. company of heroes!

I did not buy Tales of Valor ..my friends complained about the lack of content for the price. I am envious of some of the new units, but the price tag is keeping me away. The only unit I can see being a real boon is the American T17. in any case, i play as almost any faction except the Americans. my favorite is probably the panzer elite, then the wehrmacht. simHoTToDDY, is that a Tiger i see?
  8. My plugins folder is a mess.

you can delete all of them without having to worry about anything. of course, any cities with plugin material will be full of brown boxes or whatnot. once i started clean, i keep everything in certain folders like this: bld_co: commercial buildings bld_ind: industrial buildings bld_res: residential buildings bld_misc: other buildings dep_bsc: BSC & related dependencies dep_ndex: NDEX & related dependencies dep_misc: miscellaneous dependencies mod_nam: NAM mod stuff mod_MISC: miscellaneous mods (like road-top mass transit) this way i know where everything is. and i also make sure each building has its own folder..it pays off later if you find a problem with a building or are looking for something specific.
  9. The empty envelope case!

i remember your original thread about this was deleted for some reason.
  10. No Snow in Moscow this Year

lmao @ the size of their city budget. every other russian city must get jipped!
  11. Show off your cities! (Screen Shots)

is it possible to fill the spaces next to the highways and interchanges? it's kind of weird to see a very tall building next to an empty grass plain with a highway a few hundred meters away
  12. Catch Me If You Can Shoeless Bandit

i live in the same area as this guy.. the media can't get enough of him. he actually has his own facebook fan club and the owner sells t-shirts of him. all the funds get donated to some troubled young teens center though haha
  13. XBOX 360, PS3 or Wii?

    dreamcast
  14. One Kansas City Place

    very impressive. looks so realistic!
  15. collapse of the American Dollar?

trust me, i wouldn't want something like this to happen as much as the next American. I enjoy my life here in Washington state, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. but with the disastrous moves of the Obama administration and the Federal Reserve to continually promote artificially low interest rates, debt spending and endless printing of money for the difference of the public debt, I feel like it's only a matter of time until the dollar is dropped as the reserve currency. when that happens, the recession the government has been trying to hold off for so long will happen, and inflation will skyrocket. i still think that it is avoidable, but only if the right people make the tough decisions now. i also think a lot of senators and house reps who are only concerned about keeping their seats and playing the game of politics need to be kicked out and replaced with people who actually care about our country. otherwise, we're on an unsustainable path. even the congressional budget office acknowledges this. but Bernanke keeps rolling his printing press, and Obama & Wall St. seem to be cheering him on as the dollar sheds more and more of its value. suffice to say, i am a little pessimistic. but i know that no matter what happens, Americans will pull up their bootstraps and undo the disaster the greedy bankers and politicians did, no matter how long it takes. and I also believe in investing in precious metals and foreign currencies is a smart move for anyone who wants to make it through. in any case, what do you think is going to be the fate of the American dollar?

Though that is where you and I part ways, because you don't seem to be concerned about the actions of our government.
  17. Modern Warfare 2 going to far?

if they know what's good for them they'll sit down, shut up and deal with it. complaining about the game is free marketing for the developers and will probably boost sales, not to mention you may end up having the entire gaming community rallying behind it.
  18. i've recently gotten into playing SC4 again and i'm building cities bigger than i ever have before. i have NAM simulator Z with medium capacity, but no CAM. in my city, there is high demand for R$$$, and big condo projects develop. they are usually very close to the kind of things they'd want - I-HT, I-M, CO$$$/CS$$$, etc. but they suffer hugely from abandonment due to commute time. so i check the average commute, it's hovering around 0.6. is this hours or minutes? i also notice before they go abandoned, the commuters from the building usually aren't more than a few blocks away from where they work, and over half would use mass transit (subway) or simply walk. i always had this problem back when i played SC4 vanilla, except commute times were much longer. i get so sad when i see a beautiful building grow, then dilapidate only a few minutes later. i feel like it's something else besides commute time. amenities? proximity to leisure? do i really need CAM?
  19. collapse of the American Dollar?

what a nonsense comment. i have a career as an artist and i don't have time, money or resources to drop everything i have to get into politics. it would be counterproductive. instead i campaign for the people and groups i believe want to move America in the right direction.
  20. Are you still running a Microsoft operating system?

i run windows XP 64-bit. i am a 2d and 3d artist professionally, and i require pretty much the entire adobe line as well as a slew of autodesk apps. some of the apps even utilize the 64-bit architecture and the extra ram i have. i will never switch OS unless if something i need stops working in it. when that day comes i will probably switch to windows 7. i have access to free versions of their operating systems, and i couldn't be bothered to use linux, especially since there is no practical reason for me to do so. even then, windows 7 is relatively cheap if you know where to look. most students are picking up copies for $30. and it is a solid OS - i've spent some time with it and i can say with confidence it is their best OS yet. by the way, i've gotta say that open office is terrible. yeah, it's free, but it's so clunky. must have something to do with the fact that it's mostly written in java. ew.

I suppose you would reply to this by saying, "then don't act like one", but that would be mighty subjective of you. no, this is not a time for more spending. look at where it has gotten our government - CBO estimates $9 trillion of public debt after Obama's first term quote> Public debt is debt owed by the government. It is not caused by consumers. quote> Yes, and? consumer-based economies are unsustainable because you're constantly spending more than you make.quote> Not neccassarily. In fact, most people actually spend within thier means. Besides, economic growth is caused by 3 main things. Consumer spending, Investment and Exports. But Exports just mean another country is consuming and investment wouldn't exist if it weren't for consumer spending, as there would be no return. The point Im trying to make is that the subject of economics is all about consumer spending.quote> I'm not denying the importance of consumer spending - I'm saying there's a severe inbalance. And while most people may spend within their means (and probably have no choice), this whole recession was caused by doing the opposite, and everyone is paying the consequence for the decisions of a few greedy people. I live ten miles away from Washington Mutual's former headquarters, where thousands lost their jobs because of a CEO only concerned about his pocketbook. this is what caused the mess we're in right now. low interest rates, people buying things they can't afford, ridiculous credit lines - don't you already know this? we hardly produce anything and we gobble up what everyone else makes - this is unsustainable. this is the folly of modern capitalism - every 20 or 30 years we get to this point and our economy has to reset itself while we put ourselves back in financial check. this time around it's going to be especially painful quote> So when was the last time this happened? Easy credit has only been around for about 20 years. Before that this cycle you mention would have been impossible.quote> Wrong, so wrong! You act like the idea of credit is a new thing. Its roots in the US financial system go back to its beginnings, and the appeals and dangers of credit were apparant hundreds of years ago as they are today. In the 1930's, loose lending practices on margins by brokers as a system of credit was one of the main proponents of the Great Depression. It's the same kind of cycle, it only happened a different way, inciting a bank run which caused massive bank failures and incredible amounts of debt. This, of course, led to tighter regulation in lending later on. But go figure, everything the Federal Reserve Bank put in place to stop this from happening completely failed. In the 21st century, we have the same problems with different names. Brokers, banks and institutions convincing blissful low and middle income families to partake in risky subprime lending deals to buy houses they couldn't afford, all under Greenspan's guise of doing good for America's middle class. And what happened? Years later the complicated network of worthless liabilities that would never be paid collapsed, and the same thing is happening now. The frightening thing is, though, that instead of correcting our ways, we have gone back to re-inflating the bubble. A weakening dollar is not neccassarily a bad thing. Weaker currency makes imports more expensive and exports cheaper, which helps the balance of trade. There are also numerous effects - too many to go through but its not just bad if the dollar drops in value. Likewise, its not just good if its value rises.quote> This is also true, however, the point to which we got here was destructive. Sharp decreases are also alarming when it comes to inflation. On a side note, I'd just like to point out that you try to make economics seem so simple. It isn't. Please don't criticise the Federal Reserve and the government for how they're handling this reccession. Remember, it was started by the private financial sector so technically, the Federal reserve can just tell everyone 'you're scewed. We're not going to help you'. Obviously they wont, because the people in charge of this are some of the best economists in the country if not the world and if there was a major crash of the dollar on the horizon, then I'm pretty sure they would be the first to see it coming.quote> My intention is not to make economics seem simple. Things are more complicated then ever today at the pace we have created with the power of technology. I am free to criticize the secret Federal Bank and the government as much as I well please. And they had every part in this as they did the private sector, which may I remind you are closely tied to many key figures in the central bank. And technically, the Federal Reserve can screw anyone they want, and they did "screw" Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac last year. And let's not forget, they started out as a government institution.
  22. Increasing City Density Level?????

you can avoid mansions in low density zones by not making large enough zones for them to grow. avoid 2x3, 3x3 & higher.
  23. The worst building in the world

i agree that a lot of these buildings are in bad taste or out of place, but that doesn't make them ugly in their own right. one building i hate here is "The Paccar Building", here where i live in Bellevue, Washington state USA. in our skyline it is a sore thumb because it is so old, and a lot of the buildings here are new and have glass exteriors. this one is all concrete, and it is just boring looking. there's also another building of this nature in downtown Seattle, but since I can't find it here's the equally ugly (and bizarre) Rainier Tower, that always looks like it's about to fall over because of its tapered concrete base.
  24. Cities XL is NOT an MMO

i think you can call cities XL a game with massive multiplayer elements, it's just a pathetic excuse for one. a very, very tiny step in the direction of citybuilders going the way of the web. probably the wrong step, too.
  25. Constant desire for high tech industrial?

well-educated and healthy sims are going to want to work at high-tech industrial jobs. it's a good sign that there is demand for it. why not give them what they want? if you don't, you'll probably keep experiencing this.
