Could someone make a park based on RIT's Infinity Sign in front of the engineering building? Here's a link to the Institute's page on it. It's official name is Construction #105 but everyone calls it the Infinty Sign. Link I admit, another picture would have been nice but I can't find anything else. Edit: I guess I can't update the title to something more informative like Request: Infinity Sign Park

I'm adjusting to the new board software. It's different, yes, but not inherently better or worse. A more constructive thing than saying "FuseTalk sucks, idealBB great," would be to say what features of the latter you miss. If he knows what's missed, he might be able to find mods to return those features. The feature I miss most is how thread subscriptions using email were handled in idealBB. In FuseTalk, you got an email with the first message posted to a thread, but no more until you looked at the thread. In idealBB, each message was sent to you. I preferred the latter, using it to keep up with the major BAT threads. I'd like to see the messages sent, either individually or as a daily digest. I understand that might take up too much bandwidth to be practical. I've also noticed part of the complaints is learning to navigate the new software. Maybe the Help Squad can make an article about "Introducing FuseTalk for users of idealBB" to ease the transition. BTW: Using Firefox with online software can be something of a crapshoot. I have a couple of sites that I just say, "heck with it, I'll just use IE" so they'll work properly. Such sites are rare but doing that is better than getting bent out of shape because I can't use FF. *shrugs* But that's just my take on things.

Maybe it would be possible if it could be tied into the code that has fires start randomly when there's a lack of fire coverage. Well, that assumes using the built in disasters, of course. Nothing new like floods. I miss the floods from SC2k.

I like the new STEX design (other than it looks like the default Windows XP color scheme). I'm noticing a problem. For reference, I'm using firefox 1.5. Whenever I click on a lot, it opens the resulting page twice. It does it every time. Kind of annoying. Would it be possible for the STEX to let me track creators, not just lots? Samantha

SG, you make great stuff. I have a request. Could you note in the file name if a plop lot is a reward lot? I can recognize always plop lots (civic, etc.), but I can't tell if some of your SG_xxx lots are rewards or straight plops. For example, I know that the Buffalo Grill's plop lot is actually a reward. Could you note that in the file name in the future? With the Buffalo Grill, you could name it something like this: SG_Buffalo_Grill_Reward.sc4lot. I don't care for RCI menu plops but I love reward ones. Samantha

Brown boxes on a certain zoom level

Date: 12/17/2005 6:43:21 PM Author: sirgeoj2 sounds like I will have to do some digging and try and find that particular prop and re-download it or something...too bad it is in so many BAT's. -
SC4Tool - Reference and Visual Editor for BATs and Lots
pookakitten replied to Andreas Roth's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
For starters, I love SC4Tool and I've only been using it for about 3 days. It has made figuring out missing dependancies so much much easier. Feature suggestion: Would it be possible in the future for the dependancy scanner, on request, show only the lots that are missing dependancies? Currently, the report feature only shows what files the dependancy scanner could not find. -
An interesting bit of forgotten computer evolution: The three hallmarks of modern computing weren't invented by MS or Apple, but Xerox. In 1973 the mouse, GUI and networking were created by R&D in Palo Alto by Xerox. So it turns out that MS and Apple took the ideas created by Xerox and made them commercial successes. I bet Xerox wishes they protected their intellectual property. Source In all honesty, I'm a PC person. My first computer was actually a TI-99 and my first floppy disk based computer was a DOS PC clone. In elementary and jr high school, I was forced to use Apple IIe boxes. The thought of Fredwriter and Appleworks can still make me cry. I'm an engineer so our software is Windows or *nix based. In college, I had one class that used Macs (PowerMacs) and I loathed the things. Found them counterintuitive (ejecting by disk by putting the icon in the trash!?! I thought that would format my disk) and the software we used frustrated me to no end. In all my other classes, we used Windows, *nix or VAX. I have to admit, I found one time I preferred using a Mac. I was using it for a Japanese class. First, let me explain something -- inputting Japanese on a Western keyboard means writing it phonetically and then selecting the right character(s) using the computer's built in dictionary. To muddy the waters, I also use the Dvorak keyboard layout, not QWERTY. My letters are in different locations. Any keyboard layout is mapped by the OS. That's why when you install Windows, it asks you about your input method. Well, to get back to the Japanese. In Windows, to input Japanese, I have to use the QWERTY layout, a major hassle for me. On the Mac, however, it let me use my Dvorak layout. That's the single instance where I think the Mac is clearly superior to Windows. The Mac also doesn't have as much of a hold on the graphics industry as it used to. I had a boyfriend in Purdue University's computer animation department. The labs the department had were primarily Windows based, running software like Adobe Photoshop and AliasWavefront's Maya. A family friend (whose prior title at Business Week was copy editor) always had a Windows computer at home that he often worked from. That's where I first saw Simcity 2000 and was floored at how much of a leap was made from the original SC. Apple's losing its traditional business niche. As to the suggestion of picking up the phone and calling tech support, that's likely to yield the best results. Doing that, you know you're talking to a live person. Samantha, who can't believe she actually participated in the whole PC vs Mac debate

I'm using Firefox 1.0.7 and have had one incompatibility with STEX. I wanted to untrack some lots, so I clicked on the track this file box. STEX gave me an error message that basically said you can't do this. I switched over to IE and untracked those files with no problem. BTW, when using IdealBBS, or at least ST's flavor of it, I get the RTF options but implemented as HTML. There're buttons to handle the tags at the top of the posting window to handle the tag syntax for you. The other BBS software packages, such as phpBBS, basically use a variation on HTML. Another nice feature of Firefox is extensions. They're little modular packages that users write to extend the capabilities of the browser. There's one I use that will let me open the page I've browsed to in IE on the fly. It's rare that I find a page that I have to view in IE, basically Windows Update and a particular Sims 2 site I like. I think it's called ViewIE. The one drawback to this extension is I have to log back into a site if I've never used it in IE because IE and other browsers don't share their cookies. (I guess their mothers never taught them that sharing is good.) Extension management is found in the Tools menu. The manager has a link to a whole bunch of extensions on the Mozilla webpage. The one problem I've had with the Firefox beta is a good half of my favorite extensions aren't compatible with it, so I'm just using the last stable release. Y'know what? The pros and cons of alternative browsers should probably be put into a thread in the Off Topic forum...

Tutorial on the use and organization of the Plugins folders
pookakitten replied to GrampaAl's topic in SC4 - Custom Content
Actually, I thought pruning the directories was assumed. Silly me. I also greatly dislike making directories in Windows. What a pain compared to the glory days of command line DOS. Why switch between clicking and typing, when all you needed to do was type mkdir CSX? I guess I'm showing my computer use age now. Samantha -
Tutorial on the use and organization of the Plugins folders
pookakitten replied to GrampaAl's topic in SC4 - Custom Content
GrampaAl, I've a suggestion to streamline creating the directories. If you use WinRar ( http://www.rarlabs.com ), when you are working in Windows Explorer, you can right click to get a list of choices. Simply use Extract to (ZIP file name) or if there is more than one ZIP file highlighted, the option becomes Extract each archive to separate folder. Each file creates a new directory based on the name of the ZIP file. Then transfer the directories to the SC4 plugins directory, and you're done! Samantha
