  1. I;ve so far had mixed results with what i call a beltway or bypass. I laid my city out in a classic radial pattern with the river on one side and as i was laying out the roads, i noticed two of my avenues were fairly close to each other and i connected them to form a D shape and decided to run a bus line around the ring. Funny enough that being my longest bus route also has the most passengers. As for traffic, its only bad in certain parts, but it does not seem to relieve congestion.
  2. Show us your night shots

From my city I'm working on called Los Octaviae. I'm finally getting around to posting stuff I feel is worthy of being shared!
  3. Show us your Downtown/CBD

I have been lurking about here and there and have been meaning to post pictures of what I was working on from SimCity 4, but never had anything super great to share, but now I have! Here's are a a few pictures (day and night) for my CBD and promenade in the city I'm currently working on.
  4. Also here's an interesting bit that hasn't been brought up yet. El and Subway are originally designed for an above and below ground metro, respectively. Note that both are completely grade-separated. Also the train types and how they are powered are technically different, meaning that there is a difference between the GLR and the subway. Subways and EL are powered by 'third rail' whereas an interurban, tram or GLR is supposed to be powered by overhead catenary wire. We just don't see the textures and details, but that's typical. So yes, GLR is the most flexible as it can be transitioned into all 3, but a subway should stay a subway and that line 'shouldn't' mix with a GLR line. But that's getting really nitpicky with the details.
  5. Glad to! One of the easiest ways to get a good transportation network going is to make sure that you have the NAM installed. the mod basically tells the sims to take the fastest route instead of the shortest route, which may be what's happening. Also, one of the earlier forms of transit are trains, very cheap to build and maintain, heck, i'd build those before highways. But the important thing to keep in mind is to connect the residential to the commercial and industrial and not run them on the borders. and example you can use is to take a medium city tile, completely blank, and set up a small commercial zone in the middle, and add 4 outlying residential zones in a cross shape and layout avenues and rails connecting those four res zones to the single commercial in the middle. That will form your basic transit/train network.
  6. I actually started with a similar premise. Right now i have a metropolis region that is around a quarter million population with reasonable congestion, and still no freeways. I started this 'experiment' when i heard of the old Pacific Electric Railway, better known as the 'Red Cars' that used to run around the greater LA area. What most people seem to forget is that a lot of major cities had tons of streetcars/trolleys and rails before the freeways were built. Since i have the NAM installed, i use the GLR mod as a 'trolley' and have them running down the middle of streets and avenues and running on their own ROWs (right of ways) when they get into the suburbs. So far I can tell you that the experiment is working well and I have a city that doesn't need highways at all! I want to see how dense and big the metro area can get until i finally feel the need to build freeways. There are several advantages of building a region without railways (or at least starting one) rails and GLR are very inexpensive, require less maintenance, and if laid out correctly, as the population grows, your revenue will go up. Note that i don't have the 'American/european' preference mod installed. They are much easier to connect and take up way less room than highways. Also your region would have a sense of 'realism' as you lay out your rails in relative straight lines and as certain rail lines become disused, either they're converted to the GLR or freeways would be built along the same ROW. I'd say try it out and experiment!
  7. Show us your Tram Systems!

Finally get a chance to post the pictures i've been working on for a while. This region uses the Paranagua bay region map and the main city is called Cablardia. It's modeled on San Fran with a massive tram system. In the first picture you can see the main avenue and Ferry Terminal Bldg, and the second one you can see the main station. The city is still a work in progress though.
  8. yeah i think that one is up there for being the worst one. the east LA interchange is pretty bad because i use it relatively frequently, the catch is when you're going northbound on the 5, it squeezes to 2 lanes and you have to shift over another 2 to stay going northbound, same thing if you're going east bound on the I-10
  9. Worst City Planning

just curious for everyone here: what are the criiteria that you use to say "this city is the worst planned?" for example, a lot of you guys mentioned large metropolises like chicago, or tokyo, or paris. there are millions of people living there so no matter what there is going to be lots of traffic, but these cities also have a decent to good amount of mass transit, LA i can agree with, since that's where i live, and yeah we have some mass transit as well, but when the freeways don't even work as well as they should since if you've ever seen a map, there are plenty of east west routes, but very few north-south routes, which make for nightmares if one jams up. i've been to chicago and boston and madrid for example, but in all 3 cases i took mass transit which was very cheap, efficient and most importantly, it got me to where i needed to go
  10. Show us your Downtown!

So after several years of lurking, then going back and replaying the game, i think i finally have something worthy to post here! first i give you the central square: https://s1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/Rukazu3/?action=view&current=cdabf642.png then the main convention center area: https://s1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/Rukazu3/?action=view&current=cdabf642.png#!oZZ5QQcurrentZZhttp%3A%2F%2Fs1071.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu504%2FRukazu3%2F%3Faction%3Dview%26current%3D577a351b.png and finally, i give you the downtown CBD itself! https://s1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/Rukazu3/?action=view&current=cdabf642.png#!oZZ2QQcurrentZZhttp%3A%2F%2Fs1071.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu504%2FRukazu3%2F%3Faction%3Dview%26current%3D2f604930.png welcome to the city of cablardia!
  11. Worst City Planning

I would agree with adjasi with large city that LA is probably the worst city planned, since its okay if you have a car, but when one does not have a car, then its impossible to get from place to place. I really felt that the people who designed LA took into account some alternternative forms of transportation other than cars
  12. Show us your Downtown!

great shots every one! i plan on posting one of mine soon, its nearing completion and i think its one of the more 'unique' ones out there hopefully i can post it within this month
  13. Fused Grid

i don't mind the grid that much myself, especially for really dense areas. for suburbs i may try out the fused grid and use more cul-de-sacs myself.
  14. Experimental skyscraper districts

yeah those twin towers are called the torres kio, i should know, i've been to madrid.
  15. Water in the Desert
