  1. When I made the Koninginnekerk from Rotterdam a year ago, Gizmocity started asking me to make the Delftse Poort - building in Rotterdam. He never stopped nagging me since ;-) I succumbed to his pleas, and now am in the process of BATting this huge thingy. This is one of the best known buildings from Rotterdam, and used to be the country's tallest scyscraper until recently. I'll post the most recent renders in this thread, and hope Gizmocity and other people that are interested can give feedback on the model this way. Delftsche poort in RL:

Well folks it's been a nice topic. Thanks again for all the help; it greatly improved my knowhow on batting!

Very nice model! Can't wait to plop it :)
  4. Version 2

The building Delftse poort in the center of Rotterdam was the tallest skyscraper of Holland until may of 2009. It has been built in 1991, it's 151 meters high and has 41 floors. The building stand at Weena 505, next to Rotterdam Central Station. This station is the replacement of the former train station Delftsche poort. As you all know, Rotterdam was bombed in the second world war and the city lost its picturesque scenery. Over the years, the gap has been filled with lots of modern highrises. Insurance company Nationale Nederlanden is the main occupant of the building. Until may 2004 there was a stairs race every year. ------------ original building by architect Bonnema from Friesland ----------- This is version 2 of the Delftse Poort from Rotterdam, the Netherlands. It is a bat request done for Gizmocity. I strongly suggest you to remove the previous version. LM 5x5, 150,000 Plop cost 130 budget and 100 demolish cost. In version 1, it was a black hole. The people then repainted it to make everybody happy. To celebrate this, they decorated it like some kind of weird christmas tree at night. Thanks for all the help on this one!
  5. project Delftse poort - Rotterdam

Gotta say I love max! Here's a piece of the render I made with it, It's all made up from archi materials now.. With all these new texturing options, I gotta learn again how to make neat textures. For the Delftse poort I'll settle with my current skills Thanks for all the useful tips everyone
  6. project Delftse poort - Rotterdam

Thanks for your input paul, you're right about the lattices, I'll look into it! I got bat4max to work, and the best thing is: I managed to transport my model completely intact from gmax to max through 3dobjectconverter. I exported md3 in gmax > converted to wavefront > import in max
  7. project Delftse poort - Rotterdam

Allright, I installed bat4max yesterday. Unfortunately, the startup scripts for bat4max gave some errors. This might be because 3ds max is in the folder 'program files'; I read that 3ds needs to be installed into a folder without spaces... So I'm gonna try that tonight. I hope it works with max 9 because I have only that version!
  8. project Delftse poort - Rotterdam

Gosh this is starting to look like my job.. I use 3dobjectconverter to convert m3d to 3ds, this has not been a problem for me.. I'll consider using bat4max, I never took the time to install it although this would solve a lot of problems. My preferred 3d editor is cinema but I guess there isn't a script to export to sc4model files from there. I'll try some things with gradients thanks for that Furthermore it mostly grey weather in holland. On those days, the building looks grey. So I don't wanna go too far in making it blue, cause it is black in essence. It contains many references to blackness, and making it smurf or toothpaste-blue would be a shame.
  9. project Delftse poort - Rotterdam

All right I'll go for the next version, when there's even a petition lol ;-) Todd- I'm a perfectionist (unfortunately) I made every glass facade a different texture for more variation on the building. It's even harder on such a big surface to prevent a texture from looking like a pattern so I believe it's a better choice to make them for each face individually. Besides that, I made the lower tower reflect in the high rise, that's what you see when facing the building on the weena-side (the side with the ING-logo near street level). The other side has the same issues, but then it's the high tower reflecting in the mid tower. I'll start with a very dark blue surface, and paste the lines-pattern on it and do the same techniques. This time I'll make the Simcity screenshot at 30% instead of 10% opacity. It will be a minor change but tons textures need to be reloaded and I detest gmax for making me do that every time I load another model. This is the process (left to right) Will result in something like this: or this: I make fairytales, but only when they're covincing enuf for people to believe them
  10. Apple Store

Nice try! it's extremely hard to make this look awesome
  11. project Delftse poort - Rotterdam

Todd, the previous render I uploaded is kind of a black hole indeed. I promise you, the new one is quite something differen Got a problem thoh: I followed simgoober's tutorial on making it functional. I got 0 jobs however, and more importantly, simcity crashed when I pressed 'play' again after I built the thing. This is kind of a setback.. I'm gonna make you the screenshots and upload the non-functional version. I'll update it as soon as it's ready.
  12. project Delftse poort - Rotterdam

The building is done.. I'll upload it in an hour or so after I finish the lot and make screenshots and such.
  13. project Delftse poort - Rotterdam

So here's the final texture for the high tower I put this on the model with 60% diffusal map This will be it, I'm not gonna make another 4 hour render ;-) Thanks again Bixel!
  14. project Delftse poort - Rotterdam

I followed bixel's method and made new textures for all window facades. - First I made a pattern with horizontal and vertical lines in grey. I put that on a black surface. - I put the texture above (with the scrambled sc4-screenshot) on the black surface at 10% opacity - I made a checker-type pattern with the same size, and applied that on top of this with a faux finish brush at 60% opacity - I made another checker-type pattern with this size for highlights in the top left corners and applied it with a different faux finish brush at 30% opacity - I made a night version with swat-medic's tutorial. I still need to assemble the night and day version together. After that I'll make the lot (no, I'm not gonna leave it totally empty cause it will get me bad ratings ;-) ) I'm at work now but I'll post the textures tonight! Thanks for the patience ;-) I searched the whole web for a picture of the Football theme that I could use.. maybe I can ask the designer's buro to provide me with this.
  15. Nightwindow Textures

    many thanks!!
  16. project Delftse poort - Rotterdam

=) Thanks man! I'll give it a try right away! I made a render of my current model, I'm still working on the facade textures!
  17. project Delftse poort - Rotterdam

Tough luck with nightlights ! I'll make it default nightlights, I can't figure out how to do make the night texture dissapear during daytime It's a little setback and cost me a lot of time. I prolly won't be able to finish it today, maybe tomorrow..
  18. Nightwindow Textures

I 'm kinda lost.. How should you put these textures on your building to make them appear at night and dissapear in daytime? I read the tutorials on night lights around here but can't find any that use a single texture to display interior and not make it appear during day. I tried making the daytime texture semi-transparent with a nitelite to make em shine through, but then at daytime, the night texture also shines through, and that's not what I had in mind Or is this method only possible in 3ds?
  19. HK MLC Tower

This looks really lovely! Awesum texture on the windows:)
  20. Steinoffices

    Outstanding model and texture!
  21. project Delftse poort - Rotterdam

Thanks, bixel! Think that the checkers work really well, I'll try to add them to my textures, although it'll be hard. As the Delftse poort is largely made of glass with black marbles, I don't think I'll get away with such a texture. It needs something more recognisable, so not all faces on the 3 towers look the same. This can be accomplished by putting different buildings in each reflection. If all goes well, I can add some more detail and texture to the roof stuff, after that I'll do a final review and it will be finished by saturday hopefully!
  22. project Delftse poort - Rotterdam

I think I will stick to this style
  23. project Delftse poort - Rotterdam

I quit bein stubborn and decided to follow the texture tutorial.. I ended up with this texture, I thought it would be nice to give it a glassy effect because the surface is so big..
  24. How do I get BAT to work?

simcity4.com has a page about it, did you know?
  25. project Delftse poort - Rotterdam

Thanks, those are useful suggestions! I'll do some experiments with changing the angle in the picture, and if that won't work out maybe even try out some in-game screens. Too bad there isn't any highrise from Rotterdam on the stex, I would consider reflecting that First I'll go on with modelling, still lots of things to do! I hope it'll survive rendering when it's done, because it's gonna be rich in vertices I fear
