The good, the bad and the ugly*.
flpeLyyy replied to Han Solo's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Something bad, after scrolling here and there, watching videos and staring at pictures for a couple of minutes: Cities size. The cities size they showed are not highway, regional trains and any mass transport friendly. I mean... That's so... unrealistic and small. As many said, SC4 was not so realistic, had its share of unrealism and we could handle that easily 'cause it was, worst case, irrelevant. We could build fair highways that go here from there in a fair scale. But, well, 1 or 2 kilometer city with skyscrapers (!!!), I mean... a road is just fine. Well, I'm just disappointed over the cities showed in pictures and videos (I mean... These are "close-to-the-final" result, right?), and it seems a big problem for me. So I just said that 'cause I highly agree to Maarten, with this: Blargh, I don't want to be another pain in the ass complainer, "EA is evil", "This game will suck", "Blah blah blah", but... I don't see how a whole community that got disappointed to SimCity Societies will be satisfied with SC2013, if they give us what they showed 'till now. Small skyscraper city with no spreads and poorly terraformed region - I'll play City Life or SCS instead! It's not pessimism, it's just what it comes to mind after thinking a lil' bit. I totally support the optimistic guys, but my impressions tell me that one year from now we'll be just saying "how this game was disappointing", "how it commercially failed", and blah blah blah. Well, hope Our Lady of City Building Games look at our early disappointment and perform a miracle... -
What' the best strategy in designing small towns?
flpeLyyy replied to aspireman's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
As my experience with small cities says, never expect tons of cash coming in every month - small towns are, best case, low profitable or self sustainable. Try perhaps, building separate urban areas in a L map (it gives you money to mantain very small villages that are virtually impossible). Use very low cost civics - you can download such - or, even better, keep their budget on low levels. You can easily distract yourself and keep a large school/clinic ratio on a three or four blocks town, and thats a waste. Prefer low cost water tower or culverts. Prefer 1x1 lots: they will fit better on a small town and will let you space enough to keep a population paying taxes. At last, prefer small energy generators, or a medium sized one. Dont neglect small industries! Or perhaps bigger ones... small cities can hold one or two big sized company, why not? Hope this helps! You can find such small stuff (low cost civics and utilities) to download here at STEX, generally target as rural clinic, rural school etc. -
Loved those mediterranenan bldngs, they look so nice!

Update 4 | COFR

I confess I've got serious problems with vanilla content, BUT everything you made is looking so great! One of my childhood dreams was living on an island like this, on the middle of the ocean... Congrats, I'll be checking for new updates. -

Liked your CJ... Just one point, that I found it's been missing in some pics : you should get slope mod. And I must also say that, oh, we need another mediterranean bldngs pack! There's a terrible lack of mediterranean bats, everybody seems to have this one. Anyway, they fit very well in your region and you used them in a great way! BTW, your CJ deserves, at least, a 4/5, not a 3/5, that's unfair LOL ^^ -

Great stuff, but prettty confuse for people like me that never got in touch with modding. Anyway I'll give it a try and explore a little, let's see.

Good to see this little thread around. I've been thinking of it and my biggest question was : how to CAMify my lots (for personal use, of course)? What do I exactly need to change about residents number ? I couldn't see any explanation, and I got really interested on learning or even helping with the CAMifying projects (yes, I'm a LEX user ^^).

The real goal of SimCity 4

I'm here to say that this CJ is over. For technical problems (a new PC and not so much effort on copying files), I've got no way to carry on with this CJ. Although, I'm not sad or disappointed - it's obviously a short CJ, but it made me proud and happy for seeing how much I could do with SC4. I hope you liked it and for the ones who don't know Les Cascades yet, there's 14 pages of an interesting region - or I do think so... LOL. Please, enjoy. I'll probably be back someday with a new CJ. Wait and you will see. Thanks buddies, F.

Believe they are part of the CAM Residentials. BTW, they are SimGoober's residential homes, use that parameters to search, it's probably easy to find in LEX at least. No idea if they are availabe at STEX.

In this post well show you a little piece of Asia inside Les Cascades ! Le Temple ia a small neighborhood located next to the old downtown. This area, once located in a small hill by the sea, was flattened and reurbanized, intending to be a new commercial area. However, the shops didn't come and constructors didn't know what to do. As asiatic inmigrattion was growing sensitive that time, the constructors started to sell the empty lots to Japanese/Chinese inmigrants by cheap prices. The name comes from a buddhist temple, built by the first inmigrants. Instead of refusing to support the construction, the city hall approved the project knowing that it would be an interesting landmark. The Japanese inmigrants and descendents have their shops on Temple central area and nearby. They usually don't live there, living on St. Marie residential areas; nowadays you can see japanese people buying or hanging around the neighbourhood, but renting apartments above their shops to chinese, vietnamese and korean new inmigrants. (Sorry for the pause mark, I forgot it... O:) The Tan Fu Street, along the seawalls, is a great place to relax when eating your obento, or a plate with lots of gyoza, or simply watch the sea and listen to the many unknown languages you hear everywhere... South Tan Fu street is more chinese, with some restaurants and typical shops. Chineses are a smaller community - barely reaching the 6,000 people. Finally, a local skyscraper, the old Coca-Cola building, which was located in downtown and was rebuilt at Le Temple.

St. Marie Urban Renewal - Interesting places and areas : Part 1
flpeLyyy posted a City Journal entry in Les Cascades
We'll talk about interesting areas that "flourished" with the Urban Renewal plan. These areas gained attention by the local habitants, other cities habitants and - most important - by the tourists. They hold interesting commerce, exclusive services, remarkable architecture - or simply a delightful view. To start, let's see some particular places that gained more than just some renovation work, but a better concept between locals and tourists. Eglise de St. Pierre is a dutch-styled church, built next to Gare Central and Hospital des Militaires. Next to new commercial areas, it starts to attract more than just old catholic ladies, but also old churches admirers. A real interesting place to visit is the old downtown (do you remember ?), with the first city school and the first hospital. The central block also has some old buildings, including the old city hall. Another very interesting place it's Le Belvédère. From there peple can watch the city moves and also can watch the sea. You can easily see St. Gérome Island and even Foulcaud-en-Ilê in sunny or soft cloudy days. This is La Colline, a planned offices area. The buildings are now quite old, but there is a really interesting nightlife around, including dance clubs, gay bars, sailors bar (it's located next to the seaport), artists bars, 24h supermarkets, strip clubs, etc. Open minded area with lot of fun. Next post : St. Marie "little asia" : Temple neighborhood. -
St. Marie : Urban Renewal - Industry & Transports
flpeLyyy commented on flpeLyyy's City Journal Entry in Les Cascades
Blakeway: Merci ! (As if I spoke more than four or five words in french... ) Sky Guy: Thanks ! Schulmanator: Thanks ! kolnikov inc: Look out for Simgobber's industry bats, they are all awesome. CAM industrial lots are all well made. Samerton : Oh, I didn't ! But there's nothing to concern about... I really enjoy making maps and I believe I'll make others as good as Cascades. However, there's always massive destruction ways to 'reset' a region. -
St. Marie : Urban Renewal - Industry & Transports
flpeLyyy posted a City Journal entry in Les Cascades
The industry urban mess and the lack of connections between St. Marie and west cities demanded urgent improvements. St. Marie industrial districts now look way better and are safer and more pleasent for workers to... work. New transportation links improved the connection between cities, also bringing goods for St. Marie seaport. East industrial district now looks better and greener. Industrial complex at west industrial district : Giving a "new look" to industrial districts attracted great companies. Now, next to the seaport, St. Marie holds a big software company which brought jobs and cash to the city. Also the seaport went through a renovation. Expanding the seaport made the capacity of exporting/importing good increase. Good for the local economy. For the railway system, first infra-stractural work was needed. Underground passes were built, tracks fixed and the big tunnel that makes the east-west connection went through some rebuilding. And, most important, the passenger station. Now, city has several stations, giving the habitants the opportunity to make faster and safer trips through the region. Note that the railway is expanding to connect other cities to the capital. This is Gare d'Ést. And this is Gare Central. -
10 - St. Marie : Urban Renewal - General urban space
flpeLyyy posted a City Journal entry in Les Cascades
I'm gonna show you what have been improved in St. Marie de la Mer now ! The city expasion impact caused problems which were in need to be fixed : Lack of homes, density issues, decadent areas, etc. The density next to downtown areas was a problem. People living in small houses were refusing to leave their homes to give space for big residential and shops. The government decided to - sweetly - remove those persons to another areas. Downtown started to look more like a big downtown. To improve the city looking, new neighborhoods were built and sold at the city hills. That was an interesting thing - specially for tourists that may be delighted with great sea views. A really St. Marie classic area, next to the Hospital, went through a reurbanization, to take it from the decadence it had passed after some years. Although, some buildings are still dilapidated. Entire new areas were built at the top of St. Marie hill. Residential only, these areas are beautiful places to live. At the end of the streets, there is usually, in sunny days, a great horizon view. Finally, a urban limit was fixated, separating preserved areas from urban areas. Next update : Industrial & Transports Renewal -

9 - Giving a break - Foulcaud : Farms & Waterfalls
flpeLyyy posted a City Journal entry in Les Cascades
Foulcaud-en-Ilê it's a district located at St. Gérome Island, basically populated by old farmers who had their old farms bought by constructors or the government. Although initially they lost what they had, moving to the island (once rejected because of its distance) was a wonderful thing. Here is an old map showing St. Gérome island location. The main village it's Foulcaud where the major part of the population it's located The old farmers were lucky because of the natural island beauty. The tourism was a great business to the island, that started to be promoted by the Tourism Department. To hold the tourists, the government built an hotel which is administrated by the local population, being a great employer. The tourists arrive by boat from St. Marie de La Mer or from neighboor regions. Farming it's also a business to the island, providing St. Marie fresh products. Hope u liked it ! It was quite hard to make those streams ! Soon I'll get back with St. Marie urban renewal... -
