Real Highway (RHW) - Development and Support
DFire870 replied to qurlix's topic in NAM & Transit Networks

Greenville, SC - Sprawl at its Worst
DFire870 replied to Frankie_Grove's topic in Architecture & Urban Planning
The main reason why people live in the suburbs is the high desnsity areas aren't so good for raising a family. And sprawl doesn't always take away farmland. Sure, it might eat up ranches and woodlands, but to say it just eats up farmland is stupid. Also, not every new development bulldozes all the trees and plants new ones. This might be the exception, but in my subdivision they left many of the trees, so there are maybe 2 or 3 houses that have young trees. (Hell, my backyard has about 10 trees and it's tiny!). And if you really want to complain about this, go back 50 years and complain to Eisenhower. Because honestly, suburban sprawl is only going to get worse, not better. (BTW, I'm not saying sprawl is good, but there's really nothing you can do about it) -

Greenville, SC - Sprawl at its Worst
DFire870 replied to Frankie_Grove's topic in Architecture & Urban Planning
Austin, TX, is sorta the same way. In a way it's worse because we have a poorly planned freeway system. To help ease traffic there are several high-rise condos being built in downtown Austin. The tallest building in Austin will be the 360 Condominiums. And honestly, that sprawl isn't that bad. Maybe it's because I live in the suburbs, but it could be a LOT worse. -
The closest one to me is Lakeline Mall, in Cedar Park (a suburb northwest of Austin). I haven't been there in a while, but it's smack dab in a rapidly growing area. A new toll road that connects US 183 with I-35 has just been opened, so it's in a high traffic area. Anyways, it has about 150 stores, including Sears, Dillard's, Macy's, and JCPenney. It also has two shopping centers next to it: Lakeline Plaza and Lakeline Village (very original). This is Austin's newest mall. There are thee other malls in the Austin area. Northcross Mall is pretty much a ghost mall, as many of the retailers moved out, and it's attempted several comebacks. The mall is on the news almost every week now, however, because Wal-Mart wants to build a two-story, 220,000 square foot urban store in the mall. This mall is between US 183 and Loop 1. Then there's Highland Mall, Austin's first. It's nothing special, and it's located in central-ish Austin, right off of I-35. Last, there's Barton Creek Square Mall. It's kinda big, and very upscale (it used to be the only place in Austin that had an Apple Store, but now a new shopping center has another one). It's located between Loop 1 and Highway 360 (Capital of Texas Highway).

One thing that might be happening is that the areas you're zoning might be too "perfect". Cities need equal amounts of R$, R$$, and R$$$ to function. With the situation you're describing, all of the police/fire/education/health coverage might be deterring R$ from growing.

I love going to small independent bookstores. There's one in downtown Austin I'm particularly fond of, called BookPeople. It's the largest independent one in Texas, and it's great. There's also a few Half-Price Books around, which are nice as well. The restrooms are especially cool, because they have old record covers all over them.

Battlefield: Earth. The concept of the movie sounded good (and heck, John Travolta was the main character), but it was terrible! When it came out on video, I went to a local Blockbuster and several endcaps that had the movie to buy were all filled.

Austin doesn't really have a lot of performing arts centers, but we make up for it in the amount of music venues for artists and bands to play (why do you think we're the Live Music Capital of the World?) Notable centers are the Paramount and State Theaters, located next door to each other on Congress Avenue, which goes up to the State Capitol. There's also the Frank Erwin Center, which is owned by UT Austin. Right now, this is the biggest indoor place where bands can play. However, Austin's first "true" performing arts center is under construction. The Long Center for the Performing Arts is being built where the Palmer Auditiorium used to stand.

The problem is that that kind of turn on highways and railroads is too unrealistic, so if a piece was to be made it probably wouldn't make it into the NAM. It's unrealistic because at highways you're traveling at a high speed, and trains are sensitive to curves.

The best way to get I-HT to grow is to make sure the freight trips from it to the edge of the map is short, and also to increase the desirability for where you want I-HT to grow (placing large plazas and trees seems to do the trick for me). Also, make sure you're using the dense industrial zoning, and that it has water. As for CO$$$, make sure to build some plazas, and put the zones in high-traffic areas (also provide water). What I've found is that the CS$ seems to grow a lot more before CO$$$ appears.

Requesting Highway On/Offramp Piece's
DFire870 replied to Need4Camaro's topic in NAM & Transit Networks
Need4Camaro, the Maxis ramps are actually interstate grade, because here in Austin in some spots the ramps on I-35 are that short. warrior, I think he's talking about the ground highway on/off ramps done in that style... currently only the elevated highway has that type of piece. -
I've only seen a few off-ramps onto two-way frontage roads like that. Most of the time it just stays on the main off-ramp, and it's curved a little more to turn onto the southbound lane.

YannickMtl, it may look like it's working, but it's not. The game does not allow sims to commute between tiles to go to an airport. What you're seeing has nothing to do with saving a city and going into another city, etc.

Alright, I've decided to close this CJ, and work on a new one. I'm not sure when it'll be posted, but hopefully within the next month or so. So, keep an eye out for it!

Ooh, it's a lot faster! Thanks! Oh, and please try to keep the cats out of the servers again, okay? We all know they're slowing the site down.

Avi, you mean besides the default T-intersection? I was hoping for something like that too, maybe a highway version of the avenue Y-stack.
-
Ah cool, double-decker highways. In Austin they have that setup for about half of downtown, the elevated portions are the express lanes, and the ground portions are where the on and off ramps are located (although, they're not exactly right on top of each other, the elevated viaducts are off-set to the side since they were built about 10-20 years later than the ground portion).

Okay, so... I've come to the conclusion that SimCity hates me. A few days ago my computer decided to crash. Now, I managed to get it back up and running over the weekend, and install some programs. However, the backup I have of Tianech is an old one, and needless to say I don't feel like building the region back up to where it's supposed to be now. Also, there are some things with the region I'm not too happy about now that I look at it. I'm considering making a new CJ (I have a lot of ideas of what I could put in it that wouldn't be possible with this CJ), but right now I'm going to focus on my exams, and then in a week or so I'll see what I should do.

Ullebe1, deadwoods created one just like that, I'm not sure if it's here on the STEX but you can definitely get it at SC4Devotion's LEX.

The things that happen outside of education and healthcare facitilities are simply protests from a lack of funding. Those aren't the riots, when a riot takes place it'll blink red in the news bar, and in the city there will be a group of people marching down a road, with smoke and debris flying away from them. What you're experiencing are the protests, you need to raise the funding of the facility it's happening at to actually make the protests stop.

Yay, glad to see you made a new update. Great job on the mosaics and on the seaport.
