The dutch settled here making it a hub of shipping back to Holland and to South Africa. It was settled in 1822 by Edwin Von Foornaar and to this day they celibrate Foornaar day. Because of its shipping significance there are many markets were people would come from all over the land and buy meats, lumber and livestock. The central square is one of the few still remaining. The City is on the mighty Khoper River and is known for its intricate peir system. The peirs were built so ships could easily pull sail into the city and use any of the peirs.
