The UK's Most Pointless Highways
DavidBrown replied to p4p3rc1ip's topic in Architecture & Urban Planning
Ben - the roundabout junctions themselves normally work fine and cause little congestion. The reason why we have so much congestion is the lack of investment in out major motorways, meaning that often they are vastly over-capacity and inadequate for their purpose. I don't think we'll ever see the day when a UK government even mentions the possibility of a project a tenth of the size of Boston's Big Dig... -
Worst buildings in your home town
DavidBrown replied to Astroman's topic in Architecture & Urban Planning
We have a lot of bad buildings in Ilfracombe (England) -most of which seem to burn down. Edited to fix link. -
That'll be the three-level stack roundabout that p4p3rc1ip mentioned above.
-
9/10 - nothing partricularly special - but everything thta has been done has been done perfectly.
-
Thanks for that, p4p3rc1ip. I do still have the Euro Road Textures installed, but from the sounds of it, I'll leave it just as is!
-
Well, I've downloaded it, and it's certaintly an improvement - the motorways look far better and the crossing is great. But I'm not getting any of the give way lines, traffic light lines etc. What am I doing wrong?

I can't seem to get any of the links working either - and I'm in IE!

Future of SimCity Official Discussion Thread
DavidBrown replied to Compromise's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
It may already have been mentioned, but it seems silly to me that thousands of commuters can go to work in their cars, but the buildings they go to may have no parking spaces! I would like the car parks to have some effect, and commuters actually use them, rather than just disappear into nowhere. On a similar theme to 'tourist traffic', what about, for example, people going to do their shopping, or school run traffic? That would be nice to see. -

In the UK, there is a motorway service area near Nottingham which has a Burger King, a KFC and a McDonalds right next to each other! Oh, the choice!

Future of SimCity Official Discussion Thread
DavidBrown replied to Compromise's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Maybe going a little off-topic, but I have played a game called Trainz Railway Simulator. I've played the 2004 version, but there is a newer one out. My main point with this game is the graphics - they are awsome! OK, it is primarily a railway simulator, but there are huge numbers of options you have when it comes to roads - you can even decide what each induvidual road sign says! It is all 3D, all roads and railways can be dragged out so you can have extreme realism, you can decide what buildings go where and what angle they are at. OK, this game is VERY different from Sim City as it is not a tycoon game for a start - there is no money. Also, there are no public transport options (apart from railways and bus stop signs), and it doesn't matter if you put loads of residential or commercial buildings down as they don't do anything apart from aesthetics. Remember, this is a Railway Simulator. But if SimCity were to follow this example of graphics, I think we could be onto a winner. Not only that, but computers a couple of years old can easily run the game, so computers that exist in a few years time should easily be able to cope with the extra data needed for the sims and cars etc. Also bear in mind that you can actually drive the trains on this game - something not essential for SimCity. Anyone else played it? What do you think? -
Looking very nice, indeed! Great job.

Poll: How many people start a mass transit system at the begining of a city?
DavidBrown replied to sean9721's topic in SC4 Showcase
I usually place a couple of bus stops at the start of a new city, and a railway and a single station if there is already a rail line connection to a neighbouring city. If there isn't, I don't usually bother as it does just drain the money away. -

My game seems to have been crashing a lot recently aswell. However, it only seems to happen when my city gets more developed - smaller cities are no problem at all, but the larger ones frequently crash. It's getting really annoying now. When i do manage to save and quit SimCity properly, I occasionally get a message saying 'Windows Virtual memory too low', and that my virtual memory is being increased. Could this be the cause?

Is there any chance that the high-speed rail could be made so it can go over rivers? You can't place the road/avenue/rail etc puzzle pieces over water, which I would quite like to do.

Would it be possible to have roundabouts at the end of highway slip-roads? At the momet, it's impossible because there are no tiles between the slip road and the motorway, and when i tried it with the side ramps, the bit where the slip road joined looked silly. Also, would it be possible to make slightly larger, multi-lane roundabouts? Just big enough so avenues could join onto it, so prehaps a 4x4? I think that just a square of one-way roads looks unrealistic at the moment.

Date: 2/15/2006 1:41:33 PM Author: silvermac Lol, I like reading all you americans/canadians talk about your super highways. In britain, they're nearly all 3 lane. the biggest I've ever seen is the Dartford crossing, which is a 4 lane bridge, and 2 2-lane tunnels We do have some wide roads here in the UK. There are 17 lanes (both ways) on the M8 in Glasgow and the M61 in Manchester. Part of the M25 around Heathrow has recently been made a 12-lane motorway. Here's a pictur:

-
I can't ever see those roads being used to capacity, to be honest. I thinks it's major overkill.

is there a cheat to get a lot of money for me?
DavidBrown replied to curtskinn's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
If you don't want to download a building that could have negative effects on your city, then here's a tip. Type in the 'weaknesspays' cheat, but don't just go and press enter. Hold down 'Ctrl', and alternate between pressing 'Enter' (which you press first) and the 'up' arrow. Get some practice, and you could be making 4000 simoleons a second! -
Where did you get that cool-looking railway station from (third picture down, on the left)? So far, it's looking good.
-
I found the fireworks cool at first, but after a while they do get very annoying, IMO. Is there a way to turn them off, or, as I assume the answer will be, will I have to just put up with them?
