EA Shuts Down SimCity Developer Maxis

EA has shut down Maxis Emeryville, the main Maxis studio and longrunning developer behind SimCity and Spore, among other games. Though the Maxis brand will carry on, the studio that most people knew as "Maxis" is no more.

"Today we are consolidating Maxis IP development to our studios in Redwood Shores, Salt Lake City, Helsinki and Melbourne locations as we close our Emeryville location," an EA representative said in a statement.

The news comes smack in the middle of the Game Developers Conference, where developers from across the world are congregating in San Francisco for various meetups, lectures, and sessions. It's poor timing, to say the least.

I've been hearing rumblings about a shake-up at Maxis for a few days now, but official word first came this afternoon from former Maxis designer Guillaume Pierre, who wrote on Twitter this afternoon that the studio would be shutting down.

Originally founded in 1987, Maxis was best known for the Sim franchise, which began with Will Wright's SimCity and expanded to include a number of other games, including the popular The Sims series, which is handled by a separate developer called The Sims Studio.

In 2013, Maxis released an online reboot of SimCity that was plagued with all sorts of problems, which may have been what led to this final closure. Neither SimCity nor the recent release of The Sims 4 performed very well, according to a person familiar with goings-on at the studio.

Geez, I think someone, somewhere got it all backward.

They should've shutdown EA itself, not Maxis.

EA The evil giant should die!

Actually I posted a rant about this in another thread comment months ago but it was censored. I wonder why? I wasn't getting personal, I wasn't flaming any fellow forum members. I was rightfully putting an evil corporation in its place and wishing it would die once and for all.

    oh well. Sad day.

I never bought Simcity 2013. I did buy the revamped Mac Version of SC4 and am quite happy with its performance :-)

EA is profitable, Maxis overall was lucky to have profit.

Ubisoft, Activison, WB are all now worse than EA in how they treat developers, gamers, and their development partners.

    (I'm not defending EA's practices).

Maxis closing was part of the shareholder and investor led restructuring of EA.

Maxis has been "dead" for some time now- what has existed until now was its zombified shell. This is the funeral.

SimCity is why I started playing games in the 90's. Sad to see what happened to Maxis in the end.

I love what im seeing on Twitch with the Cities Skylines streams. I'm hoping it will deliver.

Have a bad feeling EA will buy out Paradox Interactive in the end  :(

What a sad day. A great legacy, now gone... I had every "sim" game there was for my windows 98 computer. Now it is just SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition I play from what used to be Maxis. EA is good at killing any game though (example: Command and Conquer 4 Tiberian Twilight)

    Great timing, EA. Great timing.

Well, I guess my dreams of an upgraded SimTower are dead now - if anyone remembers that game.

I guess you've never heard of Yoot tower the sequel of SimTower, the only thing Maxis did in SimTower was translate it

    Xenocity you are absolutely right!

Profit = reason for existance in any business

But as with al art forms at a certain point it belongs to the people, they are the reason it once was a succes in the first place.

Reason most people hate EA however is that they $%&^! al over IP once it has been acquired it (due to terms and condition of the acquisition) and when they dont $%&^! all over it, they shelf it, allowing non to make promising sequals.

In comparison, even if SC3K was highest in sales and SC2013 is the runner up, SC2013 was released in the social media hype train age and they targeted a much wider audiance. (reason for smaller maps) It might have been a more profitable succes than SC4 but in term of game sequal succes it was utterly horrible.

It has been becomming a trend to release buggy and unfinished games for EA where players will buy it anyway becuse of the IP. And that is the real reason EA is the big bad guy here, even if the other big publishers tend to be worse at certain aspects, the perception remains thus, EA games suck becuase of the decrease in quality compared to prequals. But that might be the rose colored nostalgia glasses speaking in some cases. As long as the idea is out there that EA is horrible, the perception won't change.

Simple sollution for this really ...

Dont buy EA games, no disappointment.

Now, let us think about all this.

Great art survives the demise of its creator.  I think it is pretty well established that SimCity 4 and its predecessors fall into the category of great art.  As long as we can get these programs to run on any platform, why do we care where the grave of the authors lies?

Many of us are trapped (or think we are) on the windoze platform.  Ladies and Gentlemen, let me point out that this is not so.  Pick your Linux distribution and go for it.  You can always dual boot your windoze if you must.  I abandoned windoze at the time Vista was released.

They can try but i doubt if EA would buy Paradox. The games that Pardox develop the turn base games are not really EA scene and wouldnt fit into the company. Though EA would love to get there hands on Gamersgate which Paradox owns. I very much doubt Paradox would ever allow EA to buy them out.

^ it is not wise to try to predict corporate behaviour.  So much depends on partially hidden things like interlocking directorates and market conditions that I've learned to never say never.

Maxis is victim of the EA's lack of consideration for their consumers. It is easy to sell poor quality games such as NFS or BF when people accept to buy it, it is harder when people have higher excpectations like it was the case for the Sims or SimCity...

I used to love EA games when I was younger. But now, they just became the cancer of video games industry with Activision and Ubisoft.

Please Please not let EA buy Paradox, shouldn't even think such a thing. Paradox is an amazing company EA will destroy them if that happened. Nightmares the nightmares :-).
