About this City Journal

Sizable Metropolitan area at the mouth of a major river.

February 3, 2024:  The Dornelles reached 10 million Sims.  And I think that is the end for this region.  Officially retiring the region from active work.

Still, I wanted to toss some fresh pictures up to see how far it came.

At the end, I was stubbornly trying to squeeze it to get that 10 million population without ruining it.  Not too compromised.

South Ridge

One last city profile for this region. South Ridge was immediately south of The Approaches (the ridge that is south of the of river...on the nose?) Also due west of Jamestown, it was originally a rural area full of transit junctions. But as with most places where ease of travel is offered, the people flocked there and the city grew. Final population, just shy of 400,000 Sims. Poor fair grounds, surrounded by urban sprawl. By I am too stubborn to move them.

Capital Centre

The Civic Heart of the Dornelles... Rotten to the core... Situated between the 4 major commerical centers (Addiesburg, The Approaches, Theodore, and Jamestown), the city was planned as a compromise to centralize the government. In truth, Capital Centre is a mess. So many transit systems pass traffic straight through the city, there is hardly space for the development which is needed. And yet, even so, when the Dornelles bid for international sporting spectacles, they dug out some precious space to place...

Forest Hills

Forest Hills, Population: 15,000 West of the big city, the roofs get shorter, the yards get wider, and fences turn from chainlink to white picket...and you reach the town of Forest Hill. So far, all the other neighbors of Jamestown have felt the knock on effects of expansive growth. Why not Forest Hills? The Hills made rail routes challenging, and limited population did not necessitate complex bus services. The Elevated Rail... Bah...the rich people like it this way! That's why! Mansions. Mansions. ...

Dawnside

Dawnside Population: 200,000ish Away to the south, Wedged between the hills and sea, Lies the village of Dawnside, or what is used to be... Originally a small village nestled into a small, round valley, Dawnside was the happy recipient of ease of reach for mass transit systems into Jamestown. The result? suburban sprawl across miles of once open fields. The original village was fenced in by a new downtown, and the old neighborhoods glamorized into a posh community with a special gimmick. The ring road...

South Sound

South Sound Population: 150,000 If the big city is a mouth, begging to be fed, then South Sound is the spoon. The City of South Sound derives it's name from the South Sound itself, an ocean inlet entering the area from Tailfin Harbor. A narrow but deep channel, the sound was always ideal for shipping. What it lacked was enough area for true shipping at scale. So for many years, South Sound was an "also ran", trailing well behind the ports of Addiesburg and The Approaches, who have miles of waterfront...

Tailfin Harbor

Welcome to the Beach! Tailfin Harbor Population: Approaching 200,000 Tailfin Harbor is a unique, shallow harbor on the south side of the Dornelles Region. Most of it is too shallow for major shipping. So for much of it's existence, the city was a haven for fishing concerns. As time went on, and the big city to the north, Jamestown, grew into a massive business center; Tailfin started to see an increase in visitors, and them commuters. It began with the rail bridge. For a long time, a traveler from...

The Dornelles just surpassed 7 million residents! In honor of this achievement, a new entry showcasing the latest update. Capital Service Distict Pop: 2500 lucky sims This postage stamp crammed between the major cities of the coastal area is barely a burg. Truthfully, it is a no-cities' land where the services are generated and provided to the millions on the other side of the boundary lines. Until recently this small city was a grid of smaller power plants, stacked to provide electricity to approx 2.5...

Eastward of the Coast of North Shore is Explorer Island. While the island is relatively small, it was divided into 2 jurisdictions by some brilliant algorithm. But in the end, that worked out, as the government went looking for a place it could control completely. Islands can be nice for that. If someone says they come from Explorer Island, then mean "North Explorer Island". Originally a small fishing settlement, an Air Force station was built here decades ago. Further developments on the southside of...

Park Hill

Park Hill Population: 100,000 ish It's a modest city with a big green hill in the middle. The hill originally was just a hill that kept the traffic from the Approaches to the north from meeting the freeway going to Jamestown in the south. As the road networks came together, an island of greenery was left behind. As the far eastern side of the city was a polluted mess, the citizenry demanded their mayor preserve the hill for environmental and ecological reasons. Ironically enough, as time went on, the...

Jacob's Point

Getting back to this journal with a recent inclusion. This is Jacob's Point Population: 40,000 ish Jacob's Point is in the far Northeast corner of the region. Most of the northern edge is endless fields as travelers leave the Dornelles. Being on the sparse side of North Shore, there is not much demand for anything coming out of Jacob's Point. So for much of it's existence, it was a farming community with a simple downtown. But, when the navy went looking for space to place a deployment station, the...

Great Ridge

Great Ridge 100,000 Sims This is the airport. That's it really. The city came later. Sims live here rather reluctantly. Luckily, the ridge, for which the city claims it's rather exaggerated name, helps to separate the airport, the surrounding industry, and the bustling commercial way from a more tranquil north slope, where people who live in a large city can go about life in a more small town setting. A few tunnels help perpetuate the illusion of living further way from the gigantic airport for the sims...

Valley Park

Valley Park 100,000 Sims The experimental city. Valley Park began with significant plotting of roads. The metro heart (pictured above) was framed by a one-way border road which connected to the avenues transiting through the town South to North. Inside the frame, a grid was made, then a central square with diagonal streets cutting up the grid. The result? It's alright. Looks like advertising art for the game from 2003, I think. One possible advantage was it did partially contain the commercial center,...

North Shore 150,000 Sims To the north of the major centers along the river delta, North Shore is a commuter community for many. It also is the playground of many sims, of all wealth levels. I started this city focused on getting the amusement park in place and close to transit systems. Not surprisingly, the ample transit made the area idea for RES. So consequently...where I intended the transit lines to bring tourists and holiday goers to North Shore...Most of the citizens of North Shore leave to go to...

The Approaches 550,000 Sims Just upriver from Addiesburg is a sharp bend in the river, which helps to dissipate tidal forces and makes several large pools and inlets for harbors. The Approaches is full of ships. So much so, that as time went on, I ripped a few out for aesthetic reasons. Being the first major inland city, it's transit in each direction is significant. I believe it may have more rail, freeway, and monorail lines transiting from other regions than any other city in the region. This city...

Addiesburg was actually the original commercial center of the region. But limited land prevent it's growth while her neighbors developed right past her. About 350,000 sims, the focus is on the central island, which I have deliberately avoided connecting to the mainland by bridge. A nod to the significance of shipping leaving the local harbors and traffic headed out to sea from the river. The Double Rail Bridges symbolically divide the "river" from the sea, as they are the first bridges from north to south...

Theodore City

Just up the coast from Jamestown, is the twin city of Theodore. Population hovering around a million sims, it has most of the bells and whistles of it's rival burg to the South. But where Jamestown is the commercial core of the region, Theodore dedicates more space to culture and lifestyle. The "look" of this city plays a bigger part then maxing out the space. As such, more parks and playgrounds, more museums. More higher ed opportunities, rather then just serving the need. This city has a LOT of plops. ...

So this is the beating heart of the region. 1.1 million sims. Packed in. Skyscrapers, Big civic buildings, schools, museums, etc. If this were SC2000, this is where the Arcologies would be. The city has a small harbor, a vanilla international airport, and a couple golf courses. But mostly, this city is about unchecked urban sprawl. 2024: Jamestown topped out at 1.3 million Sims, so the growth has been minimal over the years. However, it has come a long way in terms of how it looks. Love the new...
