Urbanization and the evolution of cities in Dimland across 10,000 years, Middle Ages
Welcome everyone to the third part of the epic series of this city journal. This update is about the Middle Ages, one of the three major periods in the most enduring scheme for analyzing European history: classical civilizations of Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Modern Period. The most commonly given starting point for the Middle Ages is around 500 AD, with the date of 476 first used by Bruni. Later starting dates are sometimes used in the outer parts of Europe. For Europe as a whole, 1500 is often considered to be the end of the Middle Ages, but there is no universally agreed upon end date. Depending on the context, events such as the conquest of Constantinople by the Turks in 1453, Christopher Columbus's first voyage to the Americas in 1492, or the Protestant Reformation in 1517 are sometimes used.
Christianity was a major unifying factor between Eastern and Western Europe before the Arab conquests, but the conquest of North Africa sundered maritime connections between those areas. Increasingly, the Byzantine Church differed in language, practices, and liturgy from the Western Church. The Eastern Church used Greek instead of the Western Latin.
Of course all of my cities are placed in a fictional world while for the first time i have built a medieval city, affected by the central European architecture of that time. Enjoy.
Our journey begins from the castle town of Pyrgos, located on a small island which is linked to the mainland by a short causeway 200m in length. Its area consists mostly of a large plateau some 100 metres above sea level, up to 300 m wide and 1 km long, the site of a powerful medieval fortress. The town walls and many Byzantine churches remain from the medieval period.
Next stop is the city of VestI, a very important city of its time, nowadays a very touristic place and famous for its excellent vines.
Now let's take a look to the capital of the Dimlish empire, the city of Vasileia, famous for the walls and its churches.
One of the main cities of the empire was the city of Dimitriada, nowadays the second largest city of Dimland. Many buildings of the medieval era have been restored but the majority lies i beneath the modern city.
