Technical problem has developed

rewright

About two days ago a problem with missing buildings and various props began to appear. As you see in the image, this has caused some buildings to disappear, things like Peg tree lots, parking pieces to have missing props, etc. The only thing I had changed was to remove the avenue median mod. I reinstalled it tonight but nothing reappeared. So far this has only happened in Oakland, the largest and most developed city.

Any ideas?

Thanks - Dick

Are there large "bands" of missing props in your city that stretch from one side to another? If so, you might've been hit with prop pox, which really, really sucks. :(

Thanks for the article. No, it seems to be more "spotty" with a section here and there, but not what you described. I read the article and some of it is a bit technical when talking about  file structure, etc. I am not sure I want to go deleting things in files. I really hate to have to abandon the city and/or the whole region. I've built quite a few regions over the years, some pretty large but have not run into the problem on this scale. I remember one city where a couple of lots would disappear but were limited.

Thanks - Dick

One way you can figure out with relative certainty if prop pox is your issue is by saving. If, after each save, more and more props disappear, prop pox is undoubtedly the cause. Along those lines, after each save, the city save file should decrease by a few hundred kb to accommodate those missing props.

If it is prop pox, there is literally no chance of recovering your city, or depending on which cities you played on, your region.

Some thing I havn´t encountered yet :) Awefull; some virus at work? Every project with me need to have a clean sheet, so building a new plugin whole or partly, large plugin directory´s may be the cause of these errors as too many files are in the way wich cause very long loading times ! This region seem quit jounge. Tree mod problem, last added bat´s maybe the problem ? Backup are so nice thing if things go wrong, UserDir seperate instalations are a real neat ttreat to spread the risk, hope you will come up with some nice  project soon,

Sincerely yours,

kschmidt

Sorry to hear this.

Depending on your OS, there may be an option to recover the file from an automatic system backup.

On Windows, this might be doable using "Previous Versions" or "File History". Try navigating to Oakland's saved file, or the main regions folder (in Documents\SimCity 4\Regions), and see if there's an option to restore, or copy the backup.

The issue may not be the Prop Pox. I is spotty and each time I save the city (Oakland), the file size increases slightly, not decrease.

As with buildingprops 1 - 2  it might be so you have to replop some lots to have them reapear again ! Avenue Median seem not to be the problem as they only refer to avenue´s.. As with sdiewalk and tree mod´s or street lgihtning mod´s these can be very trcky to handle ! Oddly some condo´s still are there ?

Sincerely yours,

kschmidt

I've tried re-plopping them and some still disappear. I also tried left clicking on the city file but there was no other versions listed. It is happening only in the one city. Weird.

Thanks, I appreciate that. :)

As I mentioned above, there is no other versions listed. Only backup is of a recent version which contains the problem. Thanks for the interest though.

The file size actually increases after each save, even if I don't "run" the game while it is open.

I really do appreciate the input and interest, which has always been something making this site the best Sim City forum around. Thanks again!
