Out of curiosity, in the name Hui Ts'ung Ying, does the apostrophe change the pronunciation at all compared to how I would read it in English without it? I've become a bit of a language geek in my old age.

I'm not sure here but I have looked at Thai language a little and the apostrophe in romanised Thai tells you whether to pronounce the sound in high, mid or low tone. So its probable in other Asian romanised words also.
