i hardly ever see any movies but i like apocalyptic/end of the world type stuff

such as:   terminator

                   day after tomorrow

                   final destination

                   A.I.

allright well i know final destination is not an end of the world ('cept yours) movie

but this is pretty much the same basic premise -(your screwed or pretty close to it) these interest me too

i remember seeing this movie with Anthony Edwards about nuclear attack on the us or something on tv - The end was very sweet heh he

what are your favorite any suggestions on which to rent?

^ '28 Days Later' rocks!! Such an awesome storyline when it comes to zombies, although I feel very sorry for the UK.

I love these kinds of movies.  And the dumber, the more inane, the better.  face-icon-small-happy.gif

Like:

10.5

Category 7

Independence Day

Deep Impact

Armaggedon

And there was one about a big earthquake in New York, but I don't remember the title.  Still, pretty much a made-for-TV B-movie, so I loved it!

Actually, some of these fall more into the disaster movie category, which is, of course, a bit different.  But the premise is similar, just not on a global scale.

What I don't like is apocalyptic movies that try to be deep and philosophical but end up regurgitating the stuff you learn in a freshman basic philosophy class, like Matrix.

They need to make Lucifers Hammer into a movie.

The thing I find dissapointing about most of holywood's "apocolyptic" movies, is that in very few is there actually the end of the world, or an apocolyps.  Take Armageddon for example, most corny film I've ever seen by the way, but there was no armageddon, I don't quite understand how they can be allowed to call a film that when there isn't one! 18.gif

Day after tomorrow had cool effects, but the storyline was stretched very thin.

Never seen Day after Tommorrow.....

Shawn of the Dead tottally owns.....best British zombie flick ever.....

"David kill the queen!!"

"Wha?"

"The jukebox!!!!"

lol......

I could talk about that movie for days....

Also Resident Evil Apocalypse because the whole city was doomed....but Resident Evil wasn't an apocaliptic movie....

Again another great movie and Nemesis was so badass.....

Escape from New York has been one of my favorites since i was a kid.I also recomend Escape from L.A. even if it was made 15 years after NY.....

I'd have to say Titan AE. 3.gif

I don't think anyone else will vote that. I'm unique. 9.gif

However, I like Independence Day, too.

-The Terminator Trilogy:

though not that old, the movies still are "classic" in a sense. Duke Nukem 3D Made Fun of the first one (Duke Nume 3D actuall has a ton of culture references sand spoofs in it. Some are obvois and out there, though som are more subtle).

-The Matrix Trilogy:

    again, Instant classics here.

-Independence Day:

Though a great movie, I don't know that it really counts as apocalyptic, since the good guys eventualy win. Duke Nukem 3D also ripped this one off.

-Titan A.E.:

Glad this was mentioned, actually. It's a weird movie. First off, it's a cartooon. But there's more than that. Don't tell me you didn't think of star wars when the battle started going on around Titan. I'm also really bothered by the idea of a sentient species made of pure energy. That's just not possible. Energy can't think. It also can't be contained into the shape of a body.

The ending was groanworthy, too. But overall, it was okay.

-War of the Worlds:

I speak of the 1940's original here, not Speilberg's butchering of it which I atually haven't seen). I'm severely irked by the fact that most young people out there have no idea that the recent movie was a remake.

Movies in this category I haven't seen but would like to (in order of personal priority):

-The Day After Tomorrow

-Escape From New York

-Armageddon

You know what else was actually a halfway decent movie? Saw. Not Apocalyptic, though.

This might sound strange to you, but this is exactly why I like them.

Apocalyptic/disaster movies are almost 100% predictable and corny.  The ending will feature some kind of "solution" or some kind of indication that life will go on for those of us left, but not before something has been totally wiped out in a special effects bonanza.  Oh, and there will be a gratuitous love story thrown in as well.  9.gif  Oh, and don't forget the heroic sacrifice!  They all have at least one!

And not to forget the silly incidences that always happen.  I remember at the beginning of 10.5, there is a big earth quake in Seattle.  The space needle falls over.  And the cyclist trying to get away rides in the direction that it is falling!  Take the shorter escape route to the side?  Not in a disaster movie!  44.gif

Apocalyptic/disaster movies are the ultimate form of mindless entertainment!  And the more corny they are, the better they are for a laugh as well.

Ha, so far you have all missed the best of the bunch:

Dr. Strangelove.

You should also see:

The Day of the Triffids;

The Day the Earth Stood Still;

The Time Machine.

Oh, and speaking of H.G. Wells, The Shape of Things to Come.

@Easy Bakes:  The real problem in Dr. Strangelove is figuring out which characters are being played by the same actor (Peter Sellers).  Anyway, I really liked Slim Pickens riding the bomb down.

N_O_Body, now you are talking my language!

The Day the Earth Stood Still

Invasion of the Body Snatchers

I was raised on B&W television and me and my grandmother used to spend all summer, up late at night watching the old films.
James Cagney(off-topic) but one of my favorite gangsters of all time!

Remember the Bowery Boys? and Satch was sooo hilarious!

EDIT: one thing is for sure, N_O_Body; you deserve that trixie award!

You are all over the place today!

I like the movies based in this time such as,

Independence Day

The day after tommarow

10.5

Supervolcano

Earthquake(even though it's old it seems fairly well done)

There are a few more..but I seem to love these kinds of movies...but I hate the kind of movies that are like "a car goes over a speed bump too fast and burst into flames! or The car side swipes another car and they burst into flames!"

EDIT: It's over 1 year since I posted this! I think I'll mention 2 more I really liked.

The Time Machine(very good effects)

and Panic in the Year Zero(it's old and somewhat low budget, but actually pretty good)

I don't know if Soylent Green counts as a Apocalyptic movie.

Ah, yes. The apocalyptic comedy.10.gif

I've heard that the basic idea of the movie comes from a slightly older movie called "Fail-Safe" (which I haven't seen). The plots are somewhat similar, but one is a comedy and the other is serious.

Actually, some of the best jokes in the move aren't spoken but are subtle and visual:

"Peace is our profession" -Billboard seen in the military base during the gunfight

"Danger: Nuclear Warhead" -what it says on the nukes on the plane, in smaller text above where "Dear John" and "Hi There!" are written.
