What about buildings built OVER transit?  Like the residential high-rises over upper FDR drive in NY or the Chicago Stock Exchange?  I believe I saw ONE like that in the BAT section...don't remember the name.

Do you mean the AMA Building?  That's a pretty sexy building, yeah.

The NY high-rises would be pretty cool, too.  However, they'd have to be ploppables over an avenue, and since residential ploppables don't work, they'd be kinda pointless.

I've got a few examples. 1.gif

Here's the courthouse annex in Milwaukke (might be demolished)

Offices and parking.

Here's the Boeing hq in Chicago-built over rail lines...

Here's a bunch of condos built over FDR in NY...

Milwaukee's US Bank Building-But let me explain it-the main, 43 storey tower is built on the north block.  A large section of the building expands over Michigan avenue and then connects it to the large, 3 storey office to the south block.  The tower's base reaches the edge of Michigan avenue-the domplex is just built over Michigan avenue (building on far right)

Just some ideas. 1.gif

Split buildings are very easy to make, i dont know why people havent made any yet. I have been make some for my self use for a while now. Making one involves basically

1) the size of the LOD defines the blue square area in lot editor
2) the center point in GMAX is the center of the blue square, that point in lot editor could not be moved beyond lot boundries.
3) to make night light work with split buildings the LOD size in XY plane has to be multiples of 8 (4,8,16,32,64...)

and make sure you dont cover the roads.

hope everyone start making some good ones since mine kinda suck lol

Alright, this is a very good idea. My town is too small to have any split buildings yet(in real life), but maybe if we grow, some cool architect will design one. By the way, you're not following my CJ anymore? This makes me sad...8.gif8.gif8.gif...please come back!

I'm pleased to present a bit of SBI news:

SBI gains position in the Simtropolis Glossary of Terms

Simtropolis' official glossary of terms now defines the Split Buildings Initiative as the collective effort of Simtropolis members to develop lots that span roadways.  Special thanks to Fairlane500 for submitting both SBI and Split Buildings Initiative for inclusion into the glossary. 44.gif

Feel free to make a newspost to log an SBI-wide event you've witnessed or put into motion (like the above), post notifications of split building releases in the releases thread , and unload your new design ideas or thoughts on existing ideas into the ideas thread .  Let's keep SBI rolling! 19.gif

Some buildings in Chicago, like Boeing's Headquarters(shown in ealier post), are built right on top of train tracks, or, like the old post office, have a higway going right through the 3rd floor of them. Are any of those possible in Rush Hour? If so, can someone build them(especially the one's on top of train tracks)!!!

Hey, very interesting thread. I love split buildings, and I have always been facinated by one in Oslo, Norway where the Freeway running into the city is built under a commercial area. Looks very cool when you drive and the road just dissapears under a building, love it. As a matter of fact, did you know that Norway is the country with the most tunnels in the world! The country isn't that big either! I think we have the deepest tunnel too...

-Then to a other subject. I saw some of your SBI wallpapers and thought that it was a pitty that you haven't made them for 19 monitors! (1600x1200). Nothing beats playing SC4 on a bigger screen! 1.gif

Well, keep it up, and I'll try and find some pictures of that building in Oslo.

-What are your plans forward? Is there a BAT group that want's to take on and build a beautiful split building?

As SBI is a community initiative, any community supporter is welcome to focus his or her efforts toward furthering the split buildings cause in any way he or she sees fit.  As such, development of split buildings is not limited to any single BAT'ting group; any individual or multi-membered team is free to develop lots that span roadways as well as supporting content, including BAT's, textures, props, and so on.

To make the content-creation process easier for any interested party (individuals and teams), SBI introduced a content management system  that outlines standardized naming conventions and provides a graphical seal along with other graphical specifications unique to SBI.  The management system is flexible enough to unify all releases produced specifically for SBI while allowing sole developers and teams to maintain their individuality and, as importantly, retain credit for their productions.  This system encourages developers to say, This is my production and is also a split building, while simultaneously bringing together all productions with this split building attribute.

As for your question, ExiL3, about whether a BAT group wants to tackle a split building, I can only leave this up to prospective developers.  From the response this and the ideas thread have received and the use of existing split buildings in city journals, we know that demand is certainly present.  Now we seek the individuals and teams willing to provide the supply. 2.gif

    Nice, aleking. 19.gif

An excellent shot capturing the distinct and alluring architecture of the CHX trading floor's exterior as it all but consumes Congress Parkway.  (Congress must be a particularly special expressway; ardecila mentioned at the beginning of the ideas thread that a now-abandoned U.S. post office spans another section of the same road.)

Definitely an interesting perspective in the second shot; looks like we're hovering just above the tarmac!

Thanks for your insight, aleking. 44.gif

I'll carry your post and my response over to SBI: Ideas so that the CHX may join the gallery of possibilities for prospective BAT'ters. 10.gif

Actually, johnnie, only the first picture is of the Stock Exchange. The second one IS the post office I mentioned earlier.

Oh, and thanks for the picture, aleking! I have the West, North, and South sides modelled already, just not the East (river) side. Once I get that done, I'll get a preview out for you guys.

Well, seeing as how no one is posting here..

I my as well post that project.

This is the United States Post Office in Chicago, IL. It is currently unused (abandoned), but at the time it was built, it was the world's largest post office.

    9721872_84ba0122f3_o.jpg

The lot will be 6x14, and it will allow a ground highway through it. The lot is also significant because it is the first split building for johnnie2's Split Building Initiative.

44.gif, ExiL3.  Your enthusiasm for proper split buildings is of course welcomed. 19.gif

Ah, ardecila, beautiful!  I've been tracking this since your original post in the PDA thread.  Now that you've brought it to SBI commons, I can finally release my restraints. 17.gif

Will you be using SBI's content management system when you release on STEX?
