Well my friend this is very well deserved.

You have really made a spectacular CJ here.

You have really shown this place the meaning of "Many Cities, One Community".

I am really happy for you.

The RL blues started playing at symphony orchestra levels yesterday on my arrival at work and will continue through tomorrow afternoon.

...can you turn that #%@&! music down!

To tide you over, here's a pair of pics you might find interesting.

Last summer, just before all that boring map and scale stuff...

    3rrolduj1.jpg

    ...and, as of today, after.

    3rrnewea1.jpg

Kinda, sorta speaks for itself.  The former 3RR was 10 miles/16km by 10/16.  3RR162 is 40/64 by 40/64.  I think the subregions (NE, NW, SE and SW) are proof that your region does not need to be gigantic to convey a sense of realism- just more or less accurately scaled.

The first pic, though, is kind of fun.  Reminds me of a model train layout, now that I have something to compare it to.

Enjoy your day out there, whatever it is that you're doing!

The new version looks much better, I really like those small rivers. Overall it's a very cool looking map and so realistic.

    David,

All the work you've put into 3RR16^2 is quit evident from the before and after shots, as well as the improvement with scale. The time invested in the larger region was time well spent.

Hi again David. Its been quite a while since I last posted, but I have been stopping by and viewing your great work/play regularly. My favourite pics was probably this one. Your attention to detail is outstanding!

I can’t wait to see some development take place on the new, improved region. Are you going to start by laying out transit networks? Or are you going to develop tile by tile? Also, are you going to go with straight sections of transit? Or incredibly time-consuming winding roads that look great in the region view? Which ever way you choose, I hope to see some more of your amazing transport maps one day.

Last but not least, a big congratulations for reaching Page 50! And an even bigger congratulations for winning two Trixie awards! They are both well deserved, considering the amount of effort you have put into 3RR and your CJ List. Thanks for keeping us entertained.

Well, until next time, keep up the wonderful work/play…

Edit: This was my 800th post!

Still working hard...here's a few pics of the forestation of 3RR162.

    #1

    3rr16206120802mv0.jpg

I'm basically doing Columbus mod "Conifer Mix" God Mode trees everywhere starting 200 feet/64 meters above "game" water level and "Subalpine Fir" God Mode trees along all shorelines and river and stream banks.

You ca see that blending tree "density" along snow-covered quad boundaries will be an issue.

    #2

    3rr16206120801qn1.jpg

The third step after these two passes will be to add some larger Mayor Mode conifers to "fuzzy up" the banding effect in the "Conifer Mix" treed areas.  I'll run these trees up valleys a bit and across low saddles so the banding isn't so distinct.

    #3

    3rr16206120803in3.jpg

The final step will be to place seasonal decids (in a later post in connection with doing that, I'll tell you why I chose some and rejected others from the ones that are available) on the flats and low hills and in selected places along rivers, streams and in the mountains.  That will be a big job, but hey...we've gotten this far.

Later, probably tomorrow in the morning.  I haven't forgotten about the "We've got Mail..." continuation, either.  Or the Lists.

    ...awwwwk!

    David,

That first pic kind of looks like something that has been sitting in the back of my fridge for..., chooses not to disclose the length of time, a while, lol! Acutally, it looks great, so far. I'm willing to bet that you will find a way to resolve the density issue between quads, I admit that I have not thought of one yet, other than to go back and forth between the city and region until it looks about right. Rather time consuming, especially considering the number of snow borders you have in 3RR. I like what you have done with the river/stream banks so far and can't wait until the seasonal tree issue comes up again. You may want to give Johnny Appleseed a call!

Welcome to the 51st page of this award winning CJ

    Morning David(and all of Simtropolis),

Read this article [linkie] this morning and thought ya'll might be interested.   Since we discuss mapping so often in here, I didn't figure ya'll'd mind me posting a link.    Hope we never have to do something like that in 3RR.   21.gif

Sorry for all the ya'lls but it is early (for a Saturday) and my southern accent seems to come out still then.     I was raised in Tenn.

Well, ya'll have a great day.

    ---Gaston

I was just informed that this was the 1500th post for 3RR,  Very Kool indeed! And it was entirely my pleasure, David.

    David,

First of all, congrats on the Trixies...they are long overdue.

Second, the new map looks amazing, I cannot wait to see what it looks like with trees and surface water.

Now, back to the normal Nutcracker grind... 15.gif

Hello, David! Long time, no see here in 3RR.

First of all, congrats on your two Trixies! You definitely deserve them! I did make an ad hoc award concerning your CJ Lists and how you're a statistical genius, but obviously somebody else did, too, since my description wasn't used. That other award, the "Most Educational CJ" award, definitely suits this journal because of the way you respond to people in that you always go step by step if they need help with something. To my surprise, I was actually a nominee for the "Most Educational CJ" award, but my CJs are nowhere near as educational as yours.

Now, concerning 3RR maps on the STEX:

I'm glad to see that you put your maps up on the STEX because I'm sure many people like it and will download it. Shoot, if I wouldn't have already downloaded a map for my next CJ and started building on it, I might just have downloaded one of your maps! There's no way I could've downloaded all of 3RR with its 256 tiles because it would drag on my computer so bad; I already have this 118 tile region that I'm building on that slows the game quite considerably (I know that mostly the plugins do that, but the more plugins you put in a city, and the more cities you put plugins in, the more lag you're going to get). Anyway, that said, you must have a powerful computer! I'm just wondering how bad the lag is for you, if you wouldn't mind telling me.

    Finally, concerning 3RR itself:

3RR looks incredible now that all the terraforming is done. I was comparing your old 3RR with your new 3RR, and I noticed how much better the new one is with its well-defined water bodies and land masses. Your forestation is looking quite good and very professional, and I can't wait until that is finished because I know it's going to look good! Also, I can't wait until you start developing!

Okay, now that you've read my post, I would just like to say that I'm glad I found 3RR again (RL swept it away)! I wish you good luck on your forestation and your future projects in 3RR, which I will be there for, whether I'm lurking or posting.

    Take care, David.

The latest photo looks great! I do have a few questions, though: Which trees are you using and how are you putting them in? It seems like an awful lot of work to plop all of them down.

    Another day whizzing by...

I have a few minutes, so I'll post some pics of the latest addition to the 3RR forest mix.  I'm going to go ahead and fill in down from where cycledogg's God Mode "Conifer Mix" trees stop to the base of any hills or mountains with his "Lodgepole Pine" God Mode trees.

    #1

    3rr16206121100sj0.jpg

I think these feather in with the existing trees pretty well.  Look at the following oics and see if you agree.

    #2

    3rr16206121101gw9.jpg

    #3

    3rr16206121102dz2.jpg

    #4

    3rr16206121103tl6.jpg

Quad boundaries are still an issue, as you can see.  They have to be corrected by trial and error, but we're getting there.

    A few closer in.

    #5

    3rr16206121104wl7.jpg

    #6

    3rr16206121105pd7.jpg

    #7

    3rr16206121106xo1.jpg

It's the youngest (7) boy's Christmas school concert (sheesh, that sounds pretentious) tonight, so likely no more 3RR until tomorrow.  We'll see.

    Later.
