Meh, I was expecting an update 3.gif

Hehehe.... heh! I sure couldn't hack it afterwards, the only axe I had left was a (very) small hatchet.quote>

Let's hope you didn't bury it 9.gif

Anyway, I notice you've got quite a few empty tiles in that region. I would've expected you to fill these up 3.gif

You should fill those empty tiles with trees, so that it all looks complete.

I've paid my dues

Time after time

I've done my sentence

But committed no crime

And bad mistakes

I've made a few

I've had my share of sand kicked in my face

But I've come through

We are the champions - my friends

And we'll keep on fighting - till the end

We are the champions

We are the champions

No time for losers

'Cause we are the champions - of the world

I've taken my bows

And my curtain calls

You brought me fame and fortune and everything that goes with it

I thank you all

But it's been no bed of roses

No pleasure cruise

I consider it a challenge before the whole human race

And I ain't gonna lose

We are the champions - my friends

And we'll keep on fighting - till the end

We are the champions

We are the champions

No time for losers

'Cause we are the champions - of the world

That's right, folks, we're back on the air here at KLIV 94.3, Anôrien's Song, and we are the champions.  Let's hope that's the end of our transmitter repair for now.  In today's Useless News, scientists are saying that the Milky Way will collide with the Andromeda Galaxy in 2 billion years...doesn't anyone signal anymore?  We'll be right back, after this message from Silvio's Snowboard and Barber Shop...

Woo hoo, I was glad to see on Friday that the the ol' CPU was still alive.  How has it been since?  I think there is a mysterious little world inside that box, a Twilight Zone of sorts, yes.  Since I play on my son's Big Iron, the fact that SC4 challenges even it, will mean that I will get the blame if there is a glitch, I suppose.  Oh, well, mom's privileges need to be enjoyed.

The Valley is becoming nicely filled in.  What a lot of work, you really have paid your dues to AVR.  I see you have integrated it well so that the areas and transportation networks flow well from tile to tile.  Yes, the trees might tie the mountains in nicely.  It looks like the mountains are mainly small tiles.  So if you did forest them it might not lag as much as a large tile, correct?  It is a slow process, but the God mode tool for the new trees has helped greatly.  It was also really neat to see Silvio's slide show.

Thanks for your support of my newest efforts, how could I mind??  20.gif9.gif  There are some other pics at SC4D, and I will post a few more here and there.  I worked on Robertson for the last couple months.  The city tile, Winona, won't be as time consuming (farms are detail-intensive 30.gif), but I need to get crackin' on it.  I thought I might try a much smaller version of Rochefort's Who Wants To Be A Millionaire experiment.  It was a mini journal, completed now, where he filled in everything, then clicked to see if he could get to the magic number on a large city tile, check it out, very interesting.  Late September is the target for Nibishokee County...

Your Memorial Day sounds like our Veterans Day.  My brother is a Vietnam vet, and my sentiments are similar.  Summer is in full swing here, perfect weather after getting six inches of desperately needed rain last month.  We are in better shape than we have been for 6-7 years--it is so green and pretty.  I'm gonna go get back out in it!

Til Friday, then.

Hi John,

I am back. Guess you already wondered!
Back during Ascention-day (17 May) had a short break and took the wife and kids to the camping. We have a wonderful folding trailer and visited a great camping site. So I missed the update of 18 may).
During that holiday period my living room got a new floor (parquet in french). Wonderful, the room now looks twice as big, unfortunatelly it sounds twice as little and with three sons that's............
Anyway, the floor layers made some mistakes and correcting that took me about the rest of the following week (missed update of 25 may).
So at Pentecost I too found out that my PC went Kaboem! eh, what the .... is that!  It must be the time of the year, judging from your problems too.

Well I am as computer literate as an oak door so I had to take the thing to a friend of mine who lives an hour away (for Canadian standards in the same town, for Dutch standards almost at the other end of the country). Well, he quickly found the culprit: a broken sim. Yes, there are sims in my PC.This one was fortunate only 256 MB, he did not fool around with his two 512 MB brothers, so I still have some good amount of RAM. That solved I died to try out my PC the next day (I was back at home after midnight) only to find out that the internet connection was not working. ?!?. What the .... is going on now again. It was working at my friends last evening so the PC is OK. Must be the cable. nope. Must be the socket: nope.  Could it be the connector? Yes, a big blob of varnish decorated the connector. It took me a good hour to remove it carfully with a sharp hobby knife and a thimble (my wife is a Health & Safety Manager you know). Finally I am on the air again.
Finally this weekend  had a great time with my brothers, their wifes and children during our anual come-together (which we agreed upon after my father's death 3 years ago). So I am now at the office (lotza work is waiting, but I have my own priorities, hè, hè, hè2.gif and finally can comment.

Update 38
That upper middle class sector of pic 6 & 7 is very nice.
I like the ol'Silvio. He's a great man with good principles. If nly the walk to him wasn't so darn tiresome (I must start to loose some weight).
I love those hungarian houses of pic 9.. It's a pity that those ugly yellow appartment buildings were built next to them in pic 12. Some development agents are just money grabbers. Don't you agree?

Update 39.
Pic 6 very nice res zoneing. I like the way you placed the paths. They are fitting the large building (can't remember it's name I believe it's Simgoober's) well.
Pic 7. that little green house across the plopped river is just a great sight. A house where I wish to live, if it were not for that huge exhaust pipe of the hospital and the helipad across the river.
Good! VERY very good you blasted that ugly Com sector.
pic 14. very nice those diagonal parks together with the clock. Now, that's an oldie isn't it?
I like that motel & gas station combo in pic 14, but one picture later the motel is gone but the gas station remains.Later in pic 23 and 24 I notice that it suddenly does not fit well there anymore.
The "Will wright school of gaming". Must be a boy's dream to study (or play) there.
great those paths around it. Pity there are some palms trees. Is that a 8x7 lot? So are the palm trees added or do they come with the lot?
Don't you just love that Deadwood roundabout bus stop? It is like a landmark isn't it?
The park of pic 22-24 is one of your last masterpieces. It is very well done, John.

Finally thanks for the region picture. It's so big and so full of memories that it will probably take the rest of the afternoon for me to look at it (well drool at it, that is).

Take care John and looking forward to your latest RL stuff.

It's amazing how far it's come in such a (relatively) short time. I agree with Shadow Assassin's suggestion regarding the trees, but even just popping in and out of the undeveloped tiles to change the terrain texture would improve the overall region look. Glad to hear that you are progressing (despite having lag). I'm actually getting going again myself, what with the new nam and rhw now working together. Can't wait to see what's coming up next.

Bonjour John

C'était longtemps depuis ma visite dernière. Merci pour le commentaire dans mon CJ... sorry that I didn't respond earlier, I lurked in AVR a couple of times since though. I really appreciate that you value my comments that much, thank you.

Maybe my comments aren't that technical anymore since I haven't played SC4 in a long time, which means that I'm not up to date as far as new trends are concerned. I used to figure how certain scenes were set up, but now I'm sometimes just puzzled at your amazing work. However, let me try to be analytical in a more formal way. It's just amazing how natural Anôrien looks like today, not only because of your use of trees, plop water and shoreline eye-candy (I guess I forgot the correct name of it), but also the way you arranged the different types of buildings. Especially the way you seperated the residential area from the strip-commercials looks really organic (you never saw that word in a CJ, I guess 4.gif), unlike some situations in other CJs (including mine) and even Google Earth.

When I see your screenshots, I'd love to start another CJ... unfortunately when I start something new, because of my perfectionism, it will occupy too much of my energy to do other things. So I'm just a 'spectacteur' for now 4.gif.

Take care my friend, btw, the best updates are the ones one has to wait for the longest (I hope that made any sense lol).

- Phil

Wow, thats all I can seem to vocalise right now in terms of response to this cj. I've been sat reading this, along with a couple of other cj's for a while now (former lurker right here). And I have to say that it's yourself, dedgren and jacqulina are the ones that enspired me to go the route I have with my own cj. Can't wait for the next update 4.gif

    zzavintrojune2006up2iy.jpg

    UPDATE TIME!

    zzavintrojune2006down7vf.jpg

    Bat - Capporth City

    Thanks Bat

    Your_adress_herel

    Hey! Mister YAH!

Well... it's not THAT big! hehehe....

For big you should go to David's Three Rivers Region! Now THAT'S BIG!

    Take care

Silvio - Rayden - Little Italy MD (Now closed)

    Hola Silvio,

The way the PC was acting (or rather NOT acting in fact...) I was pretty sure that it was not the HD but rather the MOBO or the Power supply... turned out it was neither (or so it seems...) I begin to suspect a faulty power cable I'll have to check on that...

Thanks for putting again the link to the AVR region animation you made... much appreciated!

That's one of the things the game is lacking, a utility to take a "complete" region pic at ANY zoom! imagine the details... a region pic at zoom 5!

Some of us would fry their PC by doing so!!!!

    Take care amigo!

    The Big Z

    Hey Big Z,

Well it was rather small but, better than nothing I'd say!

As to what I've done with the region, I'm pretty surprised myself, I never would have thought that it would be so big, and take soooo long! I guess I was carried away! WINK...

    See you.

    Ilikehotdogsalot - WORLD

    Hi hotdog,

I wouldn't say flawless... nothing is, if you look back at Minas Trith for instance you'd see a lot of diference with today standards, but I guess we all have to start someplace, perhaps one day I'll go back to MT and blast the airport... to place it on it's own city tile... but before that I have other projects.

    See you!

Phil - Pvarcoe - Terraforming Teton

Hi Phil, how's it going my friend?

Good question about the "real-time" concept, no I don't believe in real "real-time", but I guess it's as close as I can get by!

Just hoping that the delay between updates will be kept as close as possible.

Yeah, Silvio's region animation is pretty cool isn't it! That was really generous of him to do that.

Anyhow, good to see you, wich reminds me that I should have a look at "Terraforming Teton"...

    See you there!

    Take care

    Luker01 - Plantation Bay

    Thanks Luke,

Yep it has grown... and yes the style has changed quite a bit along the way, I guess it shows that even old dogs can learn new tricks! WINK

    Take care

    Bruce - Schulmanator - Schulmania

    Hey Bruce,

    I'm hangin' I'm hangin'! hehehe

Hoping to get an update ready soon...

    Take care

    SpecialEddie - Planning Gotham City

    Hey Eddie,

Yeah' I'll probably put at least some forests on the mountains... I had some ideas about some mountain villages... but I'm still not decided...

    See you!

Richard - Cleaner475 - The biggest CJ Ever

    Hi Cleaner,

Yep will do! See the answer to Eddie..

    See you!

    John - Mightygoose

    Hi John,

Darn! You saw right thru' me!

    Hehehe.... NAAAHHHH!!

I wouldn't even TRY to do the "real" Middle-Earth, nothing (even Peter Jackson's LOTR trilogy) can come close to Tolkien's creation, because it's all in our imagination and mind... and NOTHING can beat that! But we can be inspired by it though! I just finished "re-re-re-re-reading" The Lord of the Rings, I'm always amazed at the complexity and richness of those books...

Anyhow, thanks for the compliment my friend but don't hold your breath for those next 30 years though! hehehe

Daniel - Shadow_Assassin - Ensenada - That City in the east

    Hey Daniel,

hehehe, the hatchet was indeed buried.... in the toolshed, under a ton of nick-naks! And dull! So.... I think the last time it was used was to help plant some flowers... the soil was to hard and I couldn't find the small hoe... (it was probably under a ton of nick-nacks.... and dull... so!) hehehe...

Yep, I'll plant some forest on those mountains.... perhaps something else also, but not just yet, I have something in mind and just can't do it... yet...

    Take care my friend

Liv - Livin in Sim - (Nibishookee County... hopefully...)

    Hi Liv,

Hey! I saw that headline about Andromeda.... I just can picture this.... ( An old coot gettin' out of the house running and yelling..... "The galaxy is coming... the galaxy is coming... Head for the mountains!" ) hehehe...

(jeez I'm not improving with age... perhaps that old coot will be me!) wink

On the PC topic, all is going fine (knock on wood), It's just strange that I couldn't find the problem!!! I,ll sure be monitoring it VERY closely...

Mom sure have privileges and be sure to enjoy them to the fullest! After all your son would not be there if it wasn't for you!

Yeah I did pay my dues, 28 months worth of 'em, but loving every minute! Simcity as always be my game of choice!

The transit network is OK by my standards, perhaps I would have made it a bit different in Minas Tirith, but the rest I would not change very much. The Minas Tirith airport is another thing... that was not very well planned... to paraphrase Pink Floyd "one of these days I will cut" it "into little pieces...", speaking of which, this being written monday, tonight with three friends, I'm going to see Roger Waters show.... I'm really looking forward to it! The price of the tickets were astronomical (160$ cnd) but, I just coudn't miss this! (more on this later on)...

I'll sure plant forest on the mountains, I just didn't take the time to do it.

I was glad to see again Silvio's region animation, that was very thoughtful of him to post the link.

As for your pics, they really are interesting, good ideas in them. Never looked at Rochefort's CJ, lack of time as usual... I'll have to check it out. As for your own CJ, you can bet that I'll be watching the CJ thread in September...

    EDITED TUESDAY MORNING

Yesterday rained all day, raining today too.... BUT.... what a show we saw yesterday! Roger Waters was really great, he played some of his new material, a big part of "The Wall" and the whole "The Dark Side of the Moon", wow.... I had goose bumps the whole show, "The great gig in the Sky" was simply awesome... that was a 160 bucks well spent! (I wont be seeing any other big show this summer though!)

Yep our "Jour du souvenir" is exactly that, for the veterans, we MUST NOT forget what they did, they sacrificed a lot.

So, my best to you my friend, and see you soon.

    Take care

    -John

    Niek - Nik-nik

    Hey Niek,

Three boys running on hardwood floors.... hehehe... must not be quiet that's for sure, but look on the bright side, the yoghurt and cereals will be easier to clean, than on a carpet don't you think! WINK

Well my PC's back in business even if the event is still shrouded in mystery... in your case it almost looks like a obstacle course! But at least nows it's working properly...

An hour away... that's the commute time of some of some friends when they come to work... WINK

I'm more fortunate, I bought my house near my work, so it's only a 10 to 15 minute in the traffic... (lucky me!)

Family reunions, yep very important... we also try to multiply the occasions as best as we could, even between cousins... were doing what we call "les soupers de cousins" we could perhaps translate it by "cousins diners"... and having a great time!

I agree priorities are important... the work can always (well... almost always,) wait! hehehe...

Please don't talk about loosing weight.... jeez, what is it with being 50, we eat less and yet we gain weight... another mystery of life. (darn..)

I agree, those hungarian houses are GREAT... strangely enough the yellow appt buildings that grew alongside are made by the same batter! I blasted several times and waited but each and every time the yellow ones kept coming back!

Yep the building you're talking about is Goober's it's the Warldorf or something, can't find it on the STEX...

About the green house, what can I say, nothing's perfect. But I'm sure that the trees must mask most of the chimney, and the helipad is mostly used for dire emergencies, so...

Yep I didn't like that commercial sector, but for several days or weeks I don't really remember, I just couldn't find an idea.... and finally did what you saw, glad you appreciate.

I also like that Motel&Gas station combo, but with the new High rise condo, it didn't fit well... I had to find something else. I sure will be using it somewhere else cause it's great looking!

The Will Wright school, I was just searching for a good name, when I thought that we rarely give credit in our CJ's to the SC4 creator himself... so there it is..

Again those palms... it would take a lifetime to modify those lots... so I guess we have to cope with them. Yes it's a big lot, 8X7... I don't know I'd have to query it.

I don't remember if the roundabout is from Deadwoods, it surely fits its style though! Simply gorgeous.

I'll have to update the "VERY" big region picture I made before, the only problem these days is to find a BIG picture server, almost all of those I was using before are now out of service...

The updated one should offer a more detailled view of the whole thing.

On the RL topic, nothing new under the sun (or lack thereof), continuing my guitar practice, chores around the house and the usual stuff.

Went to see Roger Waters (PinkFloyd) show on monday, it was great!

Good to hear from you Niek

give my best to your family.

    -John

    tommiej

    Hi Tommiej

I also like "green cities" not only are they more realistic, but also more "welcoming" if I may say so...

Well I should have paid attention when I save the city with autumn trees, it's kinda strange to see some part of the region in summer and others in fall!

Yeah, Minas Tirith Airport is not one of my best creation... poor planning... perhaps one day I'll redo it on another tile.

    See you.

    Godwin

    Hi godwin,

I'm fine thanks for asking. hoping all is going well for you too.

As for fulfilling your request, I'd say that it was a good thing you asked for it, I didn't know what pic to post to make last week post less "dry"!

    So thanks to you!

    See you

    Threestooges – Matt

    Hi Matt,

I also agree with Daniel about putting some forest/trees on those undeveloped tiles, it'll sure improve the overall look.

Yeah, the lag is really something, working for a couple of hours gives me the same result that I used to achieve in 45 minutes... It's hard to stay focused when you have to wait for almost every little steps you're doing ingame...

But I'll see the end of that tile.... I'm stubborn that way!

    Take care my friend.

    Phil (PhilsCafe) - Acorn Creek

    Bonjour mon cher Phil,

    Comment vas-tu?

Hoping all is on the bright side in your life!

Your comments my friend, are indeed valued, they are always constructive and to the point, how can one not appreciate them!

More so when I read that you're using the word "organic" to describe Anôrien, you can't imagine how it pleases me! Back in the days (2003 I believe) when I was following jhippolito's CJ that's the word I was using I liked his work because it felt "organic", and since then it always have been one of my main goals. To create a city that feels "natural" and more "humane", a city where one REALLY BELONG! So organic is a perfect adjective for it.

So this particular comment is more than welcome!

If you want to start a new CJ, just do it on your own term, you play when you feel like it, and you post when you're ready, those who like WILL follow, as you say so well, sometimes the best updates are those we're waiting for! (wise words...)

So... you can be a "spectateur" in Anôrien all you want Phil, just knowing you still follow is good for me!

    Take care my friend.

    -John

Gilligone - The headwaters of Nemonos

    Hi gilligone,

Yeah I know I should post region pics more often but I usually present them once a new city is finished, but as Anôrien is now in it's 40'th week or something like that... it was overdue... later on I'll update the very big one whic is taken at zoom 2 for more details.

    Take care!

utora - A story of space travel

    Hi Utora,

    long time no see!

Being on your list of favorite CJ's is an honor in itself... yep 147 pages... who would have thought!!! Not me!

But the readers are giving me so much support that it makes it easier to continue until completion!

    Take care

Benedict - The Mayors of Ellis Valley

    Hi Benedict,

Been a long time, can't wait for the continuation of Ellis Valley, my favorite SimCity Soap opera!

    See you there!

    -John

    jimmymac - Shaping Invermere Valley

Hi Jimmy, welcome to Anduin Valley!

I'm very glad to know that AVR have influenced you in any way! I went and had a look at your CJ, and it's definitely something to see! Great work there...

I've also been influenced by other CJ'ers, and after seeing their work it opened new ways of playing the game to me, so if it was the case with you, that's one of the nicest compliment for me.

So here more pics and I hope you enjoy them.

Looking forward to reading you again!

    -John

Jacky - Return to Paradise Falls

    Dear Jacky,

    I'm fine thanks for asking.

I think I saw somewhere that you were unemployed these days, if this is true, I hope it's not to much of a problem for you and that the situation will soon be corrected!

Having so many visitors at your house means that you have a lot of friends and/or family, which doesn't surprise me at all, and is a good thing. Friends and family are such an important part of life!

Speaking of plugin folder, I think I'll increase the RAM in my PC just to see if it'll help with the lag I'm currently experiencing. The knuckle is now OK, just a very small pain when I do some of the more demanding barre chords on the guitar that's all.

Kid at heart.... aren't we ever! hehehe... look at us playing that game, I certainly wish I'll never grow up, inside that is... because on the outside I sure do!... my scale is constantly reminding me of that fact... the darn thing! Oh well...

I'm getting somewhat better with the Cat Stevens songs, but still a good way to go before playing in public, besides doing some jam sessions with my friends.

And as I said in PF2 silur had the very best way of describing your updates... it's true that your pics have that soothing quality! You really are an artist Jacky, you can't deny that! It's coming through your pictures...

Well that's it for now, enjoy your weekend my friend.

    Regards

    -John

Everything looks so pretty, a great update as always. Now I have a question, those condos, I remember seeing them when I was hammering through the japanese BAT sites, but i cannot remember who made them, by any chance could you answer that for me?

Another fine update. I like the mix of lots you have. The diagonal sidewalks are a good touch to the roads, hides the jaggies perfectly!

    This is absolutely breath taking....

I bow down to you. My cities are absolute garbage compared to this, and my skills... are lacking. I must improve. 9.gif

But seriously, where did you get all the custom buildings, mods, tiles etc.... I am blown away. Where can I get them?

Have you ever listed everything you have used?

Yea, I thought as much.  What things aren't on the STEX?

These CJ's.. are they financially sound.. I.e. self sustainable? or are semoleon mods used???

In my cities.. they do not look that pretty or organized, but they pay for themselves....

new update! looks very good.. i really like how i can see how you're thinking.. i really like how you did the parking garage under those commercial buildings, the style of the building and of the parking ramp make it look fantastic!

hope more RAM will decrease lag, it's the most annoying thing about sc4 when you have a full plugin folder with a lot of custom content..

looking forward for the next update

    Hey Darmok,

As always, you run an excellent CJ. I was wondering. Are you editing the properties of the parking lots to allow you to drag your street network over them? I would love to implement these into my own cities, to make my parking lots much more realistic. Also, is this what you did with your Furniture Mill? If another user beats you to the answer, then don't worry about it. Thanks!

Well that condo certainly dropped hotel prices by a bit (goodbye river views) but the rest of the area should more than make up for it. I like the little "Live from AVR" thing in the top right of the pics. It's little touches like that that really make this cj something special. Thank goodness too for the LE/SC4Tool combination. I think, in order for a cj to become truly great, it needs those small little touches (and someone at the controls who is stubborn as a mule, as the saying goes). I am curious to know, how much RAM do you currently use? I know your plugins folder is likely much larger but I'm just curious as to the difference between your system and my 256MB.
